A quite strange western movie, closer to Peckinpah's ones to John Ford's classics, good photography and awesome acting by both the protagonists

Good to see Meryl Streep as guest (and even a pretty unrecognizable James Spader, for me he is only Raymond Reddington :P)

I had high expectations after seeing the trailer in January, and holy shit did it deliver. Mary Elizabeth Winstead does a fantastic job as Michelle and John Gallagher Jr. does a stellar job as the likeable guy Emmett. However, the real attention and praise goes to John Goodman as Howard, the man who's bunker they all are in.  The movie does a great job in making you guess until the end if Howard is lying about that there was an attack or if he's telling the truth and are saving them by keeping them in his bunker.  I only have a small complaint which is a spoiler, so I will keep that out.

Every now and then I get a craving for ridiculous horror movies about people competing with each other to solve a mystery/fighting to the death, so I watched Would You Rather and Exam. Would You Rather was exactly what I expected it to be. It's pretty obvious who is going to survive at each stage. Basically the only surprise was that the actor that played Victor on Dollhouse was in it.

 

 

Exam was a nice surprise since there wasn't a lot of violence or gore (I don't have much of a stomach for that stuff, so I had to look away a lot during Would You Rather) and the situation was actually about finding someone who could do good, not pushing people to become their worst. Not a great ending, but it was nice to see a movie in this style where the people can actually just walk out of the room at any time and where people getting mutilated more and more elaborately isn't the main takeaway.

Legend - Let me just start by saying that this film is visually stunning with beautiful sets and fantastic cinematography. Visually it just looks very much like a traditional fairly tale for kids, but beneath the lovely style, Tom Cruise and Mia Sara's young and fine faces and a brilliant Tim Curry there's a lot more delving. Ridley Scott's Legend is surprisingly bleak and dark, which is interesting considering how postive and uplifting the visual style is. In one way it totally breaks with the visual style, but it totally works. Totally worth your time IMO.

 

Great soundtrack and brilliant special effects too.

 

And don't forget what I believe would be a refrence/tribute to Häxan. Very cool!

 

 

Excalibur - A big, majestic and epic Sword & Sorcery adventure based on the Arthurian legend. It's flawed, especially in its lack of good female characters, but it's a big, fat adventure and a really fun one as well. Beautifully shot, lovely told and very well-crafted film that should please any fan of Sword & Sorcery/fantasy. Classic. Totally recommended!

Beyond the Black Rainbow - This movie fucked me up pretty good/bad (depends on how you look at it xD). In any case, it's very powerful and not for everyone. Super atmospheric, very slow pacing, but packed with tons of gorgeous visuals and a creepy synthy soundtrack to die for. Also, it's crammed with interesting details, symbols and nuances that will make you think quite a bit afterwards. If you like moody artsy stuff, or just wanna see a very weird and trippy movie, this one's for you. (I was actually thinking whether to post this in the 'Horror movies' thread, but ultimately it fits better here imo. Even tho there are like two-three scenes that will haunt me for a week now, lol.)

Been meaning to watch that one for some time now!

 

A Scanner Darkly: Just about anything by Philip K. Dick does good stuff to MY dick... He's one of my favorite authors, mostly due to his crazy ideas, not so much for his actual writing style, but whatever. This was a really good adaptation of his novel, and I really enjoyed the unique visual style as well. The scramble suits were really nicely done. Actors did a great job too. Apparently the director wanted to adapt Dick's Ubik at first, but I'm honestly glad he went with this one instead. I don't think anyone will ever be able to do Ubik justice, although I'd honestly love to see a film adaptation for that one

 

Now I'm struggling to decide whether I should watch Carpenter's ''Escape from NY'', ''They Live!'' or ''Big Trouble in Little China'' next.. I cant choose lmao

I watched Circle yesterday. It's about 50 strangers getting abducted and forced to vote for one person to die until there's only one survivor. At the end, the only way for a person to survive is for the other to abstain from voting, otherwise they tie and they're both killed. Interesting concept, and it was fun to watch but it starts to lose steam after a while since there are so many characters to get through and it becomes pretty obvious who is important and who isn't towards the middle. Plus the characters can't move from the circles they're standing on, so it's like 99% dialogue.

too bad... i already watched Escape from NY yesterday. Really enjoy the whole dystopian, rundown feel of the city. Very well done. And as always, I'm still a sucker for nighttime cityscapes in general, so this movie was good in that respect as well. Would've actually liked to find out how the hell the USA got a British president someho, but eh, whatever lol.

Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolò (1999)

A fresh and funny US comedy with a brilliant Rob Schneider, even with the typical clichès of the genre!

If you want to laugh every single second, this movie is simply for you! 8.5/10

I am a literal fan of the storyline, Warcraft III and WoW (not all expansions) were the best games; I am looking forward to it sincerely!

*UPDATE*

Watched it with some friends; a really good fantasy movie, which set up a really promising saga; the best characters were Garona, Anduin (Fimmel stupified me), Llane and Durotan!

9/10 for me definitely!

Well, this wasn't a bad choice either. Another Carpenter film I give 10/10 and have watched something like 50 times. From his debut in 1974 to 13th film in 1988 he just didn't have it in him to make something bad. Everything's great and you just can't go wrong with any of them. Elvis is one hell of an udnerrated film and a must-see, just FYI.

 

The Do-Over - While this offers a few laughs every now and then, The Do-Over is just another Adam Sandler film that just isn't good enough. Aside from Punch-Drunk Love, Hotel Transylvania and to some degree 50 First Dates, have this guy been involved in anything that's not shit since The Wedding Singer? Jesus, how this man can earn so much money on being shit is a mysterium to me.

 

I've got no idea how or why he got a 4-film deal with Netflix. Of all the actors they could pick they went with Adam Sandler? Shocking.

 

 

Special Correspondents - The Office, Extras, Life's Too Short and Derek are all examples on how much quality lives within Ricky Gervais, but despite this he just isn't capable of putting out a great film. He's got so much talent, but it seems to only work in TV-series for somereason. Special Correspondents isn't a bad comedy at all, and at times it's quite funny, but it's so very uneven and a tad too long. I liked the cincept, but the jokes just isn't good enough.

A Woman Called Sada Abe - Visually stunning, superbly directed and well-acted pinku/roman porno, and no, roman porno isn't a regular porno film. But as with pinku films in general, they have plenty nudity and sex-scenes, but there's only a few titties to be seen. A Woman Called Sada Abe is an erotic drama with elements of crime and horror that for most part is shot within a small room, which is where we really get to see Noboru Tanaka's excellent skills. When filmed in one small room it's easy for the film to get a monotonous and claustrophobic feeling, but Noboru Tanaka's playfull variation of cmaera angles and movement makes it all feel a lot bigger than you'd expect it too.

 

A Woman Called Sada Abe  is based on a true story that caused a lot of fuzz in Japan in the mid 30's, and I'd totally recommend this. Great film!

 

 

Conquest - A very disappointing Lucio Fulci fantasy film with a few elements of horror here and there, and even a few god damned zombies. Conquest is Fulci trying to make a Sword & Sorcery flick, but he just couldn't fully let go of the horror which makes it a very weird blend of different elements. Some great gore and cool special effects, but the story drags on and and nothing much happens, aside from a few fights here and there.

 

Claudio Simonetti's score is great though and the hihlight of the film, though it's not very fitting. But it's good!

Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger - The third and final of Columbia's Sinbad films with Ray Harryhayusen, and sadly a disappoinnting entry. In Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger Sinbad is played by Patrick Wayne who doesa fine job with what he's given, but as usual the star of the show is Ray Harryhausen, and that is despite this ranking among his worst work. Which tells you everything you need to know about this genius.

 

But Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger lacks the story, the great adventure and the antagonist of the other two films. The films antagonist, played by a good Margaret Whiting, never feels powerful or threatening enough. I never get the feeling that she'll be able to cause proper problems. And the rest of the characters, isn't all that interesting either. The most interesting character is probaby Kassim, a man turned into a baboon that's beautifully stop-motion animated by Ray Harryhausen.

 

The last "big battle" is fantastic though. Two stop-motion animated creatures who fight. It's so well-made. A real treat to the eye.

Legend definitely is a more worthwhile/interesting movie than all the sparkliness would have you believe at first blush.

Alright so in the current trade-off thread I threatened to make a Fast and Furious power rankings.... and I totally meant it! Let me know what your list would look like/ why my order is terrible and I'm an idiot .

 

In order from best to worst:

 

1. Fast Five - kinda came out of nowhere to mark the series getting really good when almost no one would've expected F&F making the leap from 'brainless gear-head porn' to 'smart action movie'.

2. Furious 7 - I love Jason Statham

3. Fast & Furious 6 - 6 and 7 are both slightly below Five because I thought the Rock was best as the antagonist.

4. The Fast and the Furious (1) - This one actually came out right when I was first getting my drivers license so I vividly remember seeing it in theaters and totally thinking  I was going to be drag racing my old af, front wheel drive beater just as soon as I got a body kit and some NOS haha.

5. Tokyo Drift (3) - not 'good', but kinda fun.

6. Fast & Furious (4)

7. 2 Fast 2 Furious - this is about the only one I expect to be in the same position on everyone's list... god this one was embarrassing. If Eva Mendes wasn't seriously hot this might not have an redeeming qualities.

I'm not a big fan of Fast & Furious (2009), but I feel like this is the film where things started to change a bit. At this point I felt like they shifted focus from ugly cars and a very teenage-esque feeling to a cooler cars and a more mature feeling. Not that I consider it a good film, not at all. But it was a step in the right direction. But the real change came with Fast Five which felt like a completely different film from a different series. The focus was shifted from poor street-racing action-nonsense to a badass heist film that's got more in comon with The Italian Job and Ocean's Eleven, than with the previous F&F films. Same goes for the two after Fast Five as well. Completely different movies from the first four. Love the last three films! Can't wait for the next one.

Jason and the Argonauts - Fantastic adventure--fantasy with a super impressive script, a great cast and striking visuals. As good as all these things are, the real star here is Ray Harryhausen and his stop-motion animation which is brilliant, and there's especially two moments that stands out for me. The skeleton fight and the Hydra fight, both exceptionally good. Same with the bronze giant to be honest. They look so good and they feel so real.

 

And it shouldn't come as a surprise that the skeleton scene is so highly regarded, after all all it's a three minute scene in which Ray Harryhausen spent four month creating. There was also a tribute to this scene in the last season of Game of Thrones.

 

A fun fact regarding the great skeletons: all of the seven skeletons' shields are adorned with thte faces of other creatures did in the past.

Crazy Thunder Road - A very early Sogo Ishii film that was his graduation project while studying at a university in Japan. Crazy Thunder Road is a raw, mean, and badass bikersploitation flick. The entire film screams of punk and garage rock, the attitude, the characters and more than anything the buzzing soundtrack that's completely badass. It's fastpaced and filled with pure crude energy, and it feels like a big FUCK YOU to the film industry at the time.

 

There's plenty elements of Mad Max, The Warriors and The Wild Angels to be found here, but more than anything my thoughts goes to Sam Raimi and his first entry in The Evil Dead-series. Badass!

 

It is films like this and Burst City that made him a hero among Japanese punkers and rockers, as they are simply punk-as-fuck films.

 

 

The Dark Angel: Psycho Kickboxer - Low-budget martial arts flick with elements of horror (splatter) thrown in for good measure. This is trash cinema and only for nerds as myself, but I fucking loved this godawful flick - cuz I ain't lying, this is shit. But I often tend to enjoy a proper shit, and this just happened to be my cup of tea. It looks like a cheap homevideo, but there's a few decent shots every now and then, and especially a shotgun scene with is truly excellent. Not gonna lie, it gave me a boner. It was that good. Other than that there's some godawful martial arts scene, some poorly done great gore and lots of fun. In other words, my type of film.

 

If you like shitty films I see no reason why you shouldn't check this out. If you got a friend or two who enjoys the same shit as you, tell them to watch it together with you. Make sure you remember the beers too!
