OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies - A nice little Eurospy spoof that lies somewhere inbetween James Bond and Austin Powers. Think James Bond meets The Pink Panther meets The Man with the Naked Gun. Everything about this film, from the way it is shot to the way it looks, sounds and feels are authentic 60's James Bond. The film is directed by Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist), and stars both Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo, also known from The Artist, and all does a great job. It's fun, it's exciting and it's really good.

By the way, it should be said that this film is based on Jean Bruce's character OSS 117. Jean Bruce wrote 88 novels about OSS 117, and he even predated Ian Fleming's James Bond 007 by four years, so the character itself isn't a James Bond rip off or anything, and the first film was made all the way back in 1957. This film, and its sequel, are parodies and homages to the original OSS 117-series, old James Bond films and Eurospy films in general.

I can't wait to watch the sequel. Should be much fun!

Hot Girls Wanted - A documentary about the amatour/internet porn industries. I thought it was pretty poor to be quite honest. It doesn't shine a single light on anything unfamiliar, and throughout the documentary I never managed to find out where the directors actually wanted to go with it. The overall tone is very changing throughout the film.

But the main problem with this documentary, for me at least, is that it doesn't aim for the proper negative sides of the industry, the exploitation and abuse. What it does is that it follows some girls who's bored of their everyday boring lives and want to make some quick cash, then go to this young agent they meet on the internet, live there for half a year and decids it's not for them. These girls aren't forced into the business in any way possible. They want do make it big, live in glamour and have a good time. When it doesn't work out the way they wanted and imagined, they go home to their mamas and cry out like bitches. It follows a bunch of fools, and as you know, I've got no sympathy for fools.

There's some many negative sides about the porn industry and someone decides to make a 85 minute long documentary about this shit. Fuck off!

Fight Club - I dunno how many times I've already seen it, but this was the first time on the big screen!! (they're showing it at a small selection of cinemas for a few weeks here, thanks to a lovely company bringing back old/cult movies) Still as brilliant as ever.

Î just watch Jurassic World, really cool movie, better than Jurassic Park 3, maybe my favorite with the number one ^^. FX effect are really cool, story isn't bad and actor are really good.

I see Mad Max yesterday ( the new ) it's also a pretty cool movie, better than the first trilogy off course, but not the movie of the years for sure but a pretty good action movie, just the story is a little bit easy, not pushed enough in the  post apocalyptic futuristic steampunk style theme.

What? How on earth is Fury Road a better film than The Road Warrior? Or hell, even Mad Max? Not even close, browski. Esecially The Road Warrior is miles ahead of Fury Road.

OSS 117: Lost in Rio . This sequel folows the first one in tone, humour and excitement, and the sets, the costumes and the way it's shot is just beautiful. I think they really nail the 60's with it. Jean Dujardin is as amazing as he is in the first film as the sexist and racist agent OSS 117. He doesn't mean anything bad with it, he just doesn't know how to express himself otherwise. And it makes for good fun for me as a watcher. So the quality of the film is close to the first, but it doesn't feel as fresh as it did, which is its main problem.

Louise Monot is really impressive in this film as well. She does a great job.

^ that's my opinion, three first mad max aren't as good as the new, and I prefer Tom Hardy than Mel Gibson at 200%.

You can have an other opinion, but respect the  other opinion. It's my right to didn't like the three first mad max and to prefer Fury Road...

You , you like OSS 117 and I think is a stupid movie with an actor who I don't like before he make the artist, and you realize he exist, but I will not make an answer for ask you why you can't like this movie, because I respect the fact you can like this ^^.

Jurassic World - Not really sure how to feel about it yet. On the plus side, it was entertaining, most of it looked good, it had some really cool funny/scary moments. However, almost every character was just like "meh", except for Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Also, there were a few truly ri-di-cu-lous bits that were kinda too over-the-top... I would've totally dug it if it was some cheap B-movie but here idk how to react. Overall, it was tons better than the 3rd movie, maybe on par with the 2nd one (so below the original for sure).

I must apologize. I mistook Monochrome Heaven for a discussions forum where people were allowed to discuss everything from music to films to art and to dildos, and where people were allowed to state their own opinions and share them with everybody. I will obviously not do something as stupid as this again. God forbid if people dared to state their opinions around here if they disagreed with something. What an awful thought.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier - I was really surprised by The First Avenger which I, to my big surprise may I add, really liked. So my expectations were fairly high for this one, and I really, really liked this. Everything was turned up a notch from the first one. The story and plot is better, the characters feels a bit more complete here, the cast is fairly good, the villains are much more interesting and the special effects and action scenes looks ten times as good. While some of the special effects are rather poor, and some fights are way too shaky, zoomed and cut to pieces, others are actually really good and pwerful.

The film's got somewhat an old school vibe to it, without trying to be old school, and the plot is way more interesting than in most other super hero flicks. And don't get me wrong, this isn't some deep film with lots to dig into, at least not in my eyes. It's a popcorn film, but a very, very good popcorn film and miles better than the second best film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's a thrilling thriller, and not just a super hero action flick.

I am also not known for being a big fan of Scarlett Johansson, but she delivered the goods here. Was very good.

Captain-America-The-Winter-Soldier-Scarl

Nightcrawler - I finally got to see this one, and what a god damn brilliant film it was. The plot is thrilling, suspenseful and engaging, the characters are despiseable but good and Jake Gyllenhaal gives us the best performance of his career till now. What a breathtaking performance that is. The attitude Jake brings to the screen makes his character, the sociopath Louis Bloom, to one of the most memorable characters of the 2000's as far as I am concerned, and if you're not impressed by this I doubt there's anything in the world of cinema that'll impress you. The overall tone of the film is dark and gritty, but it's still very funny at times and it's visually stunning and it'll keep you on the edge througout the entire film. But Jake Gyllenhaal i the best part of this film. Amazing!

Anyway, my expectations were sky high and I am so happy this film lived up to those. I am not disappointed at all. Nothing short of brilliant!

nightcrawler.jpg

I'll also add that Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) and Macon Blair (Blue Ruin) should have had the Oscars for best male in 2014 and 2013. No kidding. The fact that neither was even nomitated shows how much of a jooke the Oscars is. Fuck 'em all!

Did you notice all the similarities with Jurassic Park (1)? With smaller similarities but also in the very comparable big picture, the new movie could also be named "Jurassic Park but in 2015".

The kids in peril while riding an attraction. The one who was supposed to keep an eye on the kids but loses sight of them and tries to rescue them. Humanity as an enemy (sort of) and several characters having their different (evil..ler) plans revealed. Expository scenes explaining how the park came to be and what they do in the labs. Nods towards the "are they living creatures or tourist attractions" discussion. Innocent characters like a security guard getting a gruesome death. The ending where the group of characters we focus on is saved by dinosaurs fighting dinosaurs. In the end, dinosaurs rule the island... again. The Tyrannosaurus roars... again.

It could be described as a loose remake but pretending it's a new movie following the first one.

It was both enjoyable and awful and shifted very quickly from one end of the spectrum to the other end.

Fury...

Apart from Brad Pitt, which was sublime in his role, the rest of cast was meh...

The movie was good, but not one of my favourite war movies...

Yeah, there were also some nice/fun hints here and there. Overall, it's a pretty good movie for what it is, imo.

Also, gonna watch the glorious classic Jurassic Park again tonight~ :)

Jurassic World

I wasn't really expecting anything outta this movie but it was overall very average to me. The CG was just plain awful at times considering the budget of this film. It's very noticeable right from the beginning with the egg hatching scene. While the actors did a decent job, the script was bogged down with annoying Hollywood cliches. The characters were nothing more than just simply archetypes. There were some nice little cameos from the first film such as the DNA cartoon character. The climax made the film a lot more interesting and it's cool the movie ends on almost the same note as the first film.

Inherent Vice - A nice, complex mixture of crime, drama and comedy with a lot on its heart. Maybe a bit too much for its own good, but it is a Paul Thomas Anderson, and if you're familiar with the works of Paul Thomas Anderson you should know that his name equals quality. I really liked this film, but that didn't have much to do with the plot. I really enjoyed this film for its visual style, amazing cast, great atmosphere and nice humour. Very noir- and stoner-comedyesque, and it really works. Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and especially Katherine Waterston delivers some amazing performances, and the latter completely steals the show. Hell, she makes this film worth your time all by herself. It's an odd, and at times surrealistic film, but I sure enjoyed it.

Inherent_Vice_Joaquin_Phoenix.jpg.CROP.p

The Guest - This was probably my most anticipated film of 2014, and I finally got around to see it. And despite my massive expectations I was not disappointed. I consider Adam Wingard to be one of the most interesting and coolest film makers of today, and I feel even stronger about that after seeing this film. Him and Simon Barrett and fucking dynamite together.

The Guest is a slick, stylish and cool-as-fuck retro-thriller with some almost campy comedy thrown in here and there. It's got an engaging plot, great characters, brilliant soundtrack, superb cast and as always from Wingard, nice direction. It looks neat, it feels neat and it sounds neat. Imagine someone putting together a film where the main influences were The Terminator and Halloween, and maybe even with some The Wraith on top. Dan Stevens and Maika Monroe are both top notch here.

Fantastic film! This was just amazing.

Kung Fury - I've been following the development for this film since it's early kickstarter days, so I had some pretty high expectations. It's not a good film in any way possible, but it's such a cool and over the top mongoloid film that it's impossible not to enjoy it, especially i you grew up watching 80's action, martial arts and buddy cop action-comedies, something which I happened to do. The film is absolute nonesense, but it's damn fine nonesense and it's a blast from start to finish. It's a collection of every single film, TV-series and video game clichés from the 80's. Simple as that. A god damn blast! And lovely one-liners. Oh, and a lovely bad guy. How can one NOT love Kung Fhürer?

I will have to admit that they should've managed to get it even better with the kind of budget they had, though. I'm mainly thinking about the special effects. Don't get me wrong, though. This is a silly film where there's no need for good special effects. But I wish they'd tone down the CGI a bit and gone for more practical special effects like they did it in the 80's. But it's nothing serious.

The man himself has got a lot of projects at the moment, but I'm sure we can expect a sequel in a few years. I read that they had been asked about a full-lenght sequel with a pretty high budget. Would've been cool.

Sydney/Hard Eight - Paul Thomas Anderson's debut full-lenght film, and a very good one as well. Dark, gritty and character-driven noir with some amazing performances by Philip Baker Hall and Gwyneth Paltrow. John C. Reilly is good as well but the two first drives the film sort of speak. It's a calm film where you're introduced to some fantastic characters, and that's where the film shines, because thw characters are all great and believeable, and their actions seems realy and true. A really, really good film!

True Romance - A very nice Tony Scott-directed crime film with some fantastic performances by Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, James Gandolfini, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman and more. The three latter completely steals the show despite their limited screen time. The film is directed by Tony Scott, but it's written by Tarantino and his name is written all over this film, from the plot to the character to the dialogue and reference to other films, especially The Steet Fighter and Sonny Chiba as we all know Tarantino love. I really adore the plot for this one, and the story works on so many levels. The romance are believeable, the crime of it all is very exciting and interesting and I totally buy how things works out. Oh, and the violence totally works. The violence is truly violent and simply beautiful! Fantastic film.

I'll admit that I think this would've been way better with Tarantino directing it, though. I prefer him to Tony Scott and I think he would've done an even better job, making this one of the best films ever. But it's still fantastic, so I can't really complain about anything.

6 Reasons Modern Movie CGI Looks Surprisingly Crappy

A lovely little piece on why modern CGI is so god damn boring and for most part awful. Worth a read for sure. Shit's spot on. I still say fuck CGI as it is used today. Point #4 stands extremely close to my heart. There is nothing wrong with using CGI, but use it as a helpful tool when there is no way around. If there's a way around, just fucking take it for gods sake. It's worth it at the end anyway.

And as directors opt for more and more digital sets, suddenly every movie looks like regular people inserted into a computer-generated cartoon, instead of CGI elements dropped into a real world

It's not that the original Jurassic Park looks better because the CGI is better, but rather that the original film knew to hide its effects.

Boogie Nights - It's been more than 10 years since I saw this and back then I thought it was among the best drama film I've seen, and now, 10+ years later, I still think this is among the best drama films I've ever seen, and I also consider this Paul Thomas Anderson best film. The story is great, the direction even better and the cast superb. Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly and the rest does really well, but it is Mark Wahlberg and ESPECIALLY Burt Reynolds who are the best here. The latter completely steals the show.

Everything about this film is godly. There's not really a single weakness to be found here. Brilliant!

2262_1.jpg

Wild Style - Wild Style is often considered the first ever hip hop film, and it's one hell of a powerful film. OK, let me just start by saying that I don't think this is great filmmaking in any way. The acting is awful for most part, the cinematography is shit and it's overall shit. But despite this, it's such as passionate and powerful film that you kinda forget about every single of its weaknesses. It's filmed in a shitty documentary-style as well, but I won't call it a documentary. It's a film that illustrate the early hip hop scene really well, and it includes rapping, DJing, beakdancing and grafitti which was a huge part of the scene, and it features some big names of the time such as Grandmaster Flash, The Cold Crush Brothers, Fab Five Freddy and Busy Bee Starski. It's a really cool film and a film I believe caught the pureness of the hip hop scene back in 82.

Payback - I still consider this one hell of an underrated film. Yeah, so it's not quite Point Blank or Full Contact which were both based on the same novel as Payback, but it's still a really badass revenge flick with a top notch performance by Mel Gibson who drives this film with a emotional and badass portrayal of a cool-as-fuck badguy. I mean, there's not a good guy to cheer for in this film. No matter which side you cheer for, you cheer for a badguy, which I personally like a lot. It's violent, and the violence is very stylized and cool imo. Underrated, but really enjoyable film.

Kickboxer - I used t be a huge fan of this film and yesterday I found out I still am. It's a fairly standard film for its genre and it follows a story line used many times both before and after this film, but it's made in such a way that I personally can't hate it. The acting is poor for most part and the action is at times cut to death, but it still hits me in the right spot. But what makes this such a superb film to me personally is the training session which is top, top notch, the chemestry between Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dennis Chan and Michel Qissi crazy good portrayal of Tong Po. Qissi might not have been a good actor, but his attitude were spot on and he looks absolutely mental throughout this film.

Kickboxer is up there with Bloodsport and Universal Soldier, and just right behind the utter masterpiece that is JCVD, Van Dammes best film to date. And I am a fan of several other Jean-Claude Van Damme films, so it's safe to say I love this film.

And kudos for one of the worst and funniest scenes ever:

As stupid and bad as it is, I just can't hate that.

This Is Spinal Tap - I'm glad I had a rewatch of this film the other day because this is still as funny as it was 10 years ago. No, it's even funnier today. I don't have much to say other than that this is the work of a genius. I like how genuin and real everything seems, which just makes every good joke even funnier. This film is nothing but superb!

Also, Spinal Tap was/is a cool band, which makes it even cooler. It wasn't just some mediocre shit made up for the film, it was cool shit which they seemed to put a bit of an effort into creating. The first half of Stonehenge for example is so good.

And kudos to IMDB for their rating system on this film. God damn 11!

Le clan des Siciliens (or The Sicilian Clan) (1969)

Fairly typical but very enjoyable gangster movie with a jailbreak, a heist, a police investigator who can't quite wrap it up, pursuits, hijackings, killings. A meticulously staged escape from a prison van marks the start of this series. Alain Delon (wonderful actor who can only play one role but who cares if you do it in the ways of Alain Delon) gets some help escaping from a long prison term by a criminal family plus associates and in return has gotten a hold of plans to rob some very valuable jewelry.

It's a very 'comfy' movie. The pace is relaxing, there is no rush to tell this story and there are no deliberate sluggish interludes either. There's some tension, but not the kind of tension where you're geniunely frightened for what may happen to any character, but the kind of tension where it's more curiosity on how the plot will play out. Admittedly there are a few minor inconsistencies that could be described as plot holes but this hasn't bothered me much. Would recommend!

Very enjoyable movie with criminal activities/10

UFifcXz.jpg

Words and Pictures (2013)

Highly predictable and rather shallow drama about two teachers: the male specimen is an alcoholic master of the English dictionary, the female specimen a painter and art class instructor. For some silly reason they get into a disagreement and set up a competition in which their students have to prove how either words or pictures are the higher artform. Of course the male and female specimen get romantically involved and it should be no surprise that the ending is a cliche'd mess of words meets pictures and they both have their reasons to exist and blabla and blaaaaaa we live happily ever after and I'm left with no clue why I watched this thing.

Juliette Binoche is the female specimen so that's good but then that's about the only good thing in this movie/10

Confession of Murder - What an odd film from first-time director Byeong-gil Jeong. It starts off as a thriller in the vein of Memoirs of a Murder and The Chaser, just a bit more action-oriented in the fights. It's dark, gloomy and very interesting. A solid cast is on place and whatnot. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, comes an awful, "funny scene" and the film change its tone from dark and gloomy to action-packed fun. This fun lasts for a while, and then they go back to the dark, serious and gloomy tone of the begining. It was so odd, because the action-packed Fast & Furious-scenes were so out of place in the film and the humour just didn't belong either. Overall it was enjoyable, but these action and comedy scenes just ruined the total experience of it for me.

I am not sure why they went for Park Si-hoo in that role either. He does good, but he comes off as way too young. I don't buy it.

The film deserves a re-writing and a remake because this could so easily have been a masterpiece.

confession%20of%20murder%201.jpg

Cyborg - Late 80's so-bad-it's-good post-apocalyptic action with Jean-Claude Van Damme. The only thing actually good about this film is the sets and score, but I like it a lot for what it is anyway. The atmosphere is very nice, Van Damme is his usual self aka awesome and Vincent Klyn is bloody hilarious. He's so bad like. If you think Van Damme is a bad actor, just wath this guy. Fantastic!

Anyway, it's violent with lots of action that just never stops and I like that kind of stuff. So I like this film a lot.

Van Damme actually took out a man's eye under the production of this film. Jesus, you don't fuck around with Van Damme. That's for sure. He just doesn't play around.

cyborg.jpg

How to Steal a Million - An absolute masterpiece starring Audrey Hepburn in her prime and Peter O'Toole, both which are fantastic, and Hugh Griffith who stands behind the majority of laughs in the film. He's amazing as well. It's a romantic heist-comedy where the romance feels genuine, the heist is exciting and the comedy hilarious. What more can one ask for? I don't know, because I don't ask for more than that. I loved this film!
