  1. ^Sorry, I don't know any of those artists.

    1. AA= - Humanity2

    2. Thee Michelle Gun Elephant - Danny Go

    3. Dragon Ash - Cool Boarders

    4. Shounannokaze feat. MINMI - Sakura ~Sotsugyou~

    5. J - Across The Night

    6. Corrosion of Conformity - Dirty Hands Empty Pockets (Already Gone)

    7. Kyle Vincent - Goin' Down

    8. nil - Mona Lisa

    9. Nakamaru Yuichi - STEP BY STEP

    10. Down - Nothing In Return (Walk Away)

I really love the AA= and Shounannokaze tracks, but Danny Go is the obvious winner from this list. It's one of the first TMGE songs I ever heard, so it'll always be special to me.

  2. Finally got around to listening to YON, so here's one more:

No video, but there's a full acoustic version up on No Big Deal Records' Youtube channel:

    Wednesday

MANY ME LIVING INSIDE MY BODY AND TIME
    ME AND ME AND ME...
    Gozen san-ji ikou no shikou
SHALL WE ALL TONIGHT LET ALL OF US TOGETHER IN MY ROOM
    MEETING IN MY HEAD
    Gozen san-ji ikou no shikou

MORE SIMPLY, THEN I CAN UNDERSTAND IT
    HEY THERE, HERE’S MY FEELING
    THAT’S ALSO MINE
SORT ALL OF THESE ON MY DESK

Saigo no koe ga suru suiyoubi
    Kanjou no kyoukaisen
    Kizukanai furi
    Kutsuu datta darou
    Dou natte n da
    Boku no nounai shuuchuu kouji
Koumyou ni doumyaku ni kizukanu you ni
    Keikaku henkou-chuu

    MEETING IN MY ROOM
IT STILL DOESN’T SEE TO GOING WELL
    TRUE VOICE IS CRASHES
    Gozen san-ji ikou no shikou
MY PURITY AND MY PRIDE WENT HOT AND HAVING AN ARGUMENT
    GRABBING EACH OTHERS’ SHIRTS
    Gozen san-ji ikou no shikou

MORE SIMPLY, THEN I CAN UNDERSTAND IT
SORT MY ALL OF FEELING ON MY DESK
MORE SIMPLY, THEN I CAN UNDERSTAND IT
AND A HEARTLESS FEELING, MY CALM FEELING
NOW IT’S TIME TO GIVE A JUDGE

    Henji no nai

  4. I went with option 2. I find it really charming for certain artists. Especially bands that are a bit more on the silly side, like the telephones, the pillows, pop punk bands, etc. There are certain songs that just wouldn't be anywhere near as fun to sing along to in Japanese.

    This one, for example:

It gets a bit harder to make it work for more serious songs, but some singers pull it off.

  5. I've been pretty lucky. Most of my absolute favourite bands either came back in the past few years or are still going.

The only disbanded ones coming to mind are Psycho le Cemu and Thee Michelle Gun Elephant. PLC keep holding reunion shows every now and then, and it's not like TMGE can or should get back together after Abe Futoshi passed away, so I can't really complain about those two either.

  6. ^Cyntia aren't called VK, as far as I know? They're a regular hard rock/metal band that's gradually becoming more pop-rock.

The comments in the OP are just comparing the way their sound is changing to VK bands, and the other poster even says "please stop comparing Cyntia to VK".

  7. I know a few of those artists, and I listen to a bit of Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas, but I don't know any of those songs.

    1. KinKi Kids - to Heart

    2. asobius - new morning (Japanese ver.)

    3. nil - Fighting Friday Night

    4. Silver Ginger 5 - Brain Sugar

    5. Tesla - We're No Good Together

    6. Faith No More - Everything's Ruined

    7. Cinderella - Sick For The Cure

    8. David Usher - Alone in the Universe

    9. Static-X - The Trance is the Motion

    10. Shotgun Messiah - Side F-X

This is an interesting one. I'm surprised I got such a long string of English songs with the way my music library has been recently. There's some cheesy stuff on this list, but Alone in the Universe is a classic. Really brings me back to the glory days of MuchMusic.

  8. I started listening to Japanese music some time in 2000 (maybe even 1999), but I didn't really start listening to Jrock until 2003. I am sure I listened to the odd VK song here and there before, but I really started to get in to VK when I stumbled across a certain website. I so wish I could remember the name of it. The person running it had short profiles of several of his/her favorite bands and then a list of their top favorite songs by each artist. They had a download link for the top song every artist, so my first VK songs were the likes of Dir en Grey's Cage, hide's dice, X Japan's Silent Jealousy, Penicillin's Chaos, Gackt's Vanilla, Glay's Two Bell Silence, Luna Sea's Rosier, and Malice Mizer's Syunikiss. For the sake of not over estimating, I put myself down for 2004.

Do you mean Project J? I don't think it's still around anymore, but that was the site that got me into almost all of my favourite bands when I first started listening to Japanese music.

In addition to the bands you listed they had a lot of profiles for non-VK artists like Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, Judy and Mary, the pillows, The Back Horn, etc. Lots of really good stuff.

  9. Seconding Hitomi Yaida and Silent Siren.

Also, no mentions for Shonen Knife and Judy and Mary?

I'm not a diehard fan of theirs, but Shonen Knife have the cutest lyrics ever.

"He gets his kicks from a tiny toy
A green frog filled with catnip
And pretty soon he's gonna be seventeen
    Kitty cat birthday party

Catnip is a kitty cat drug
    We plant catnip seeds together
All summer long he watches it growing
    Dreaming of the harvest moon

Catnip dream, catnip dream, catnip dream
    Meow, meow, meow"

    Judy and Mary
