Hair is such a problematic thing. I really want to cut and dye it somehow, but I don't have any idea how...

It is easy, I just dyed mine last night and am getting it cut today. Nothing to it but to do it.

My hair goes red then blonde in sun so I die it dark again to reset it. Buy a dye that comes in mousse form, in the mid price range or above, read the instructions, and leave it in for just under the max time.
