Just think of something on the spot it's not a job interview

You don't even HAVE to play anything but I guess that's not in the line of thought of most folks here because when someone leaves they always do right after their own choice of song and it's not even coincidence or funny anymore it's just the egoistic nature of the human being maybe but does that never bother the person like don't you have a sense of guilt when you are that self absorbed that you must play your song and then leave the room I don't know man that just seems very whatever anyway but I'm glad that the cute theme has been wiped off of the table because I expected nothing less than your false sense of japanesed kawainess that has already poisoned the minds of a lot of you and there would only be sugarysweetj-lolitas who wished they were in a manga or anime or some shit and genuine cute would not have had a chance against the fake and forced hello kitty culture

big update coming to plug in a few days (possibly tomorrow). they're replacing the current plug notes system with subscriptions. any plug notes will be converted to plug points. you'll be able to buy the premium avatars with points now, but the prices are expensive af. subscriptions give you unlimited access to all avatars and stuff regardless of level.

I have been with last.fm since it was still called Audioscrobbler. I think it was a pointless endavour to try becoming a streaming/radio site when there are others who do it much better. Sure, the recommended tracks radio was nice, but not the reason I signed up. I want to scrobble my music, get charts, get recommendations and maybe find other people with similar music taste. And for me, that purpose is still being fulfilled, so I have no reason to complain.

I think they should just scale down a bit, go back to their core functions, stop trying to be a radio/streaming/news site.

The site is back up... kinda. No new update. Basically, they restored the site but any points you earn or songs you add to your playlist won't save. They're still backing things up.

chewi got a reaction from Tetora in If you didn`t have Japanese Music, what would you be listening to now?
How much does Japanese music add to your life?
I feel like getting into Japanese music has added being more open-minded to my (musical) life. I find myself checking out more artists no matter what language or the genre because of it. I haven't been "seriously" listening to Japanese music for a long time, in fact it's just over 3-4 years. It's also allowed me to be more tolerant of other people's tastes. I remember when I used to think experimental music was weird and that listening to music in languages that you don't understand was pointless. Also, without getting into Japanese music I wouldn't have many of the friends that I have today.

Would there be any benefits to not having it, like a heavier wallet or bigger bank account? Or is it just plain worth it?
My wallet and bank account would definitely benefit if I wasn't into this music because importing albums from Japan is a pain in the butt and expensive. But so worth it. I like supporting artists that I like. <3

Do you have irreplaceable friends you found through Japanese music?
    Yeah.

Has it opened up your life more? Gave you an interest in Japanese culture? How would your interests change if you didn`t have this music?
I've always been interested in Japanese culture but my interest definitely increased when I got into the music. I had always liked anime, manga, and thought Japanese was a cool looking language . Honestly, without Japanese music in my life, I wouldn't be learning Japanese right now or have had the desire to change my major to Asian Studies (with a concentration in Japanese studies). I really think it's made me who I am today.

Without Japanese music... I'd probably be listening to pop music like Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, etc. just a lot more (though to be honest I already listen to them a lot). I think over time I would have went from pop music to indie music, and then bouncing back and forth between those with some rock albums thrown in... that seems to be a common pattern for me.

plug.dj said that they were going to be in maintenance all last night and this morning, but would give us an ETA (estimated time of arrival) for the new site. But that got delayed as well.
Anyway, I guess I'm not surprised it's being delayed again. Stuff happens. However I also feel that it's good they aren't rushing to get the site online because that would probably create more issues. Just thought I would post this for people who aren't following them on Facebook or Twitter.

I'll just say that I'm surprised at many of the comments here.

I lived in Japan for a good while and I've never experienced anything like that. I dunno if I'm just lucky, but if someone tells me he/she had been denigrated or mocked by a random stranger on the street... Japan's probably one of the last places that will come to mind.

From my own experience - and I won't pretend that it's a universal experience of Being In Japan - I've observed that alienation is something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. A lot of people feel that they won't be accepted *anyway* in a foreign land hence they make zero effort to know people in the local community. It's the same here where I live. We peer at foreigners in our midst and imagine that they won't want to be approached by us anyway, so we keep a distance from them and feel miserable at having been alienated "by them". Obviously there are instances where you do get rudely rebuffed, and that's unfortunate. Nonetheless this isn't a problem endemic to Japan - there are rude idiots everywhere.

It's also no one's fault that there's always gonna be a language/culture barrier. This problem is compounded in Japan as they're generally not fluent in conversational English, and instead of embarrassing themselves they tend to avoid gaijin. Some people construe this as "being rude" but I don't because if I were in their shoes I'd probably have done that too. This brings up another problem I've noticed that's the opposite of the first - some visitors to Japan can be overzealous. Let's just say Japanese people generally don't like others (especially strangers) to be too in-your-face or direct, especially if they can already hardly understand what you're trying to say. For my part, rather than clenching my fist and whining that this barrier exists, I did everything I could to try and overcome it by learning their language. After all, I'm more interested in their culture/language than they are in mine, so why not? By and large things have worked out very well in my various interactions with natives.

In any case, I would advise taking others' anecdotal "evidence" with a pinch of salt. Some people may have had bad experiences - and I'm sorry to hear that - but these aren't exemplary of what living in Japan as a non-Japanese feels like. The bottom line is that if you treat people in a way that you'd like to be treated, there shouldn't be problems.

Edit: Regarding the topic, it's unanswerable because how would I know what living in Japan as a Japanese feels like? I believe this was basically what Ikna said as well - without knowing that there's no basis for comparison between the two "possible scenarios." However if I have a chance to move there permanently (and that's different from "wishing I'm Japanese") I think I'll be happy to do so
