Hello~
Some time ago I translated all of Madeth gray'lls lyrics to German and reading through those translations again I thought that their stories are so cool I should do it once more, this time in English, and share them with everyone who might be interested. orz
This time I also want to include all the small poems and stories printed on booklets and CDs that aren't directly related to a song and arrange everything in a way to make the tragedy a little more coherent because all the songs are loosely connected.
 
I'll post every song individually and add a list with the links here to keep things tidy. ;D
The structure is a somewhat chronical order, but if there are multiple versions I'll mostly choose the newer ones, because Hisuis writing improved quite a lot over time. There will propably be 6 acts, even though I know a classical drama should only have 5...

I'd very much appreciate any help finding mistakes. D; Neither English nor Japanese is my native language and the lyrics are so bizarre it's not always easy. Please note that in some songs the imagery and scenes described are very graphic.
 
Hisui mentioned in Interviews that he started to write grotesque and apocalyptic lyrics after surviving the great Kobe earthquake that killed 6434 people in his hometown, including his girlfriend.

*'狂詩曲', 'kyoushikyoku'  actually means 'rhapsody' in English, but here it's written as '狂死曲' with the kanji reading 'mad-death-song' or 'Madeth song'.
That's why I decided to translate it as 'mad-death-rhapsody' to keep both meanings.

I'd very much appreciate any help finding mistakes. D; Neither English nor Japanese is my native language and the lyrics are so bizarre it's not always easy. Please note that in some songs the imagery and scenes described are very graphic.
 
Hisui mentioned in Interviews that he started to write grotesque and apocalyptic lyrics after surviving the great Kobe earthquake that killed 6434 people in his hometown, including his girlfriend.

My entrance to the Vee kay fandom was pretty similiar to most people's experience here. I was a huge Manga fan back in 2003 and a freaky mallgoth. So when I discovered in manga and anime magazines that Visual kei existed I was immediately interested, because it appeared to be the perfect mix of Mallgoth and Animu. The first bands I bought CDs from were of course Moi dix Mois. I "accidentally" saw their album Nocturnal Opera being sold in the CD section of an electronic retailer. I thought "whoo, that's goffick Vee Kay from Japan, I'm gonna buy it!!"
After this followed CDs from Dir en grey, D'espairsRay, Gazette and Unsraw. I was a big fan from 2004 to ca. 2006, then I had a one year pause. In 2007 I finally got internet (very late, I was 15 I think) and browsed around youtube, watching some Dir en grey PVs. Somehow I ended up watching Aliene Ma'riage and Madeth gray'll videos and I was hooked again. And since then my love for Visual kei (mainly oldschool) hasn't topped.

Please note the lyrics are all gathered up from various places. I simply fixed a lot of the errors I found (there was a fair bit!), writing it up as printed on the lyrics sheets (thanks to this post and Naaaaani for taking photos of the lyrics!) This means that the lyrics may be sung a different way, but written as seen here, because as I found out while doing this, a lot of the lyrics floating around seem to be written by ear...
 
If there are still any errors, please let me know.
 
I spent far too much time on this because I was bored... I figured I'd share for anyone else who was interested.
Notes: I'm not posting lyrics from Lu:Ciel or objexxx because I don't have an image of the print lyrics to go off of to make sure they're correct. There's a transcription of 呪ワレタ楽園ノ影 I found, because on the tape for it, there's no posted lyrics; not posting that becasue I'm not sure if it's correct either. (I will post them if asked, however.)

2004 was the year I really got into the fandom guess. D'espairsRay, Blood and Eve of Destiny all played in my city and I also got fast internet access so I could use filesharing software like Winmx and Slsk. ;D

My palmtree-hair dried all wavy and visual after the rain. Worth a mirrorshot.

I personally prefer old VK. I really liked the mid 90's when so many was kind of fruity to the appearance. The music obviously, just like any genre, has trends and I'm not that into the type of music most modern VK bands do...
They all have this very polished look, and so does the music.

Questions:

 
1: Don`t worry about others, is Visual Kei a genre, or a scene, or something else, to you?
I'd say both, although the genre in that case is a very loose one and it's very easy to find 2 bands that are both visual kei but play music so different from each other that it's a little weird to put their music into the same category but:
If someone would ask for a band that is similar to some vk song I could only recommend other vk bands. Mathematically speaking it's a group. A closed system. The only way to get out of vk by always listening to something similar to the song you listened before is go backwards until you get to songs that influenced the genre before it existed or go forth in the history of bands that 'left' the genre.
Almost every typical structure, image, rythm and sound can be found outside of vk, but not in the the context it's used there, the impact is completely different.
 
And that is maybe because it's first of all a scene and one that mainly influences itself and developed such a unique live-culture. The songs are mainly composed to fit into a classic vk live performance, they are specifically designed for that purpose and as there is no similar live culture in any other genre the songs will sound different.
So. The scene influenced the sound and made it into a genre, although genre is not the right word. Rather 'loose category of song structures and patterns'.
 
2: Most of the time can you tell the genre, or if you will like a band based on their look?
Well most of the time the general direction is obvious, although lately it became a thing for upbeat and fun bands to wear black and thick make up to confuse me.
Still. If I saw the bands look, the cover of their cd and read the song titles I will always have a pretty good guess what they sound like and I'm almost never wrong. Liking a band because of their look is absolutely ridiculous, though. Well sometimes I think 'wow they look cool, too bad they sound shitty.' or 'Damn, this band is so much fun, it'd be nice if they put more effort into their looks, they'd sure get more people to listen to them.'
 
3: Do the looks matter to you? If the same band dressed in Jeans and T-shirts with short hair, would you be as interested?
Absolutely. That sometimes happened to me with bands that stopped looking visual, like for example La'Mule. They were actually better in the end and the plain look suited them, too.
However. it is really unheard of for a band to have a casual look (from the very beginning) and play the genre I prefer. (That is your typical 98-03 indies sound with lots of screams and insanity) So of course I'd only try them out if someone told me about it as I'd never assume it if I saw them.
 
4: Do you search for music by sub-genre, such as Nu-Metal, Alt. Rock, etc?
I don't. Only by connections to bands I already like (same members, same label...) or recommendations by friends.
 
5: Do you get annoyed when others label your favorite music as genres which you don`t agree with?
Certainly, yes. For example when people use 'kotekote kei' for a band only because they are old or refuse to use it only because they are new.
 
Bonus: If a band starts as Visual Kei, even if they change, are they Visual Kei 4 Lyfe?
That really depends on how they change. Do they still use vk imagery, vk language, vk sale strategies?
Dir en grey for example dropped the looks a long time ago but they kept their 'visual kei' feeling because they still use cheap shock effects, dramatic language and still put on a theatrical show on stage.
On the other hand I'd never call Madbeavers visual kei. Everything about them is rock band, there is absolutely no connection.
