Isn't the point of manba/ganguro etc. to say fuck you to Japanese beauty standards? Asians also have an obsession with white skin, but it stems from white=rich tanned=poor who works in the fields all day, right? So although it stems from a culture which rejects any kind of dark skin, it's got nothing to do with black people imo/from what I know. So I see it entirely as a separate thing. 

@platy aah yeah, I think you're right... I rarely see gyaru on the streets (and extremely tanned ganguro, but once or twice) and many of them are sex workers or doing things close to that field, there were times when I used to think that gyaru is all about being rebellious and beautiful, but gyaru's reality, ugh, well, sucks.

It's not all fun like in the magazines?
