I was also thinking of Denshi Kei when reading -k∆-'s text. can't believe I forgot electro ones -.- Too many subgenres doh.

Both shironuri and piko piko kei are new to me. The latter sounds way too cute. : 3

Basically anything that doesn't involve Oshare or a variation of it. Anything that relies that heavily on current fashion trends doesn't really have a soul musically for me.

Also learned something from this poll as I never knew the term was "kurofuku kei", I always heard it simply as "kuro kei", but I suppose that was an abbreviated term possibly.

Perfect strategy. Wait for a band from the same city as you to disband, then take their name. BAM instant fans. Maybe they can trick people in by announcing one of their lives as a "secret one day revival" and see how many UCP fans show up.

Artist: MY FIRST STORY Album: 虚言NEUROSE Score: Blazing your own trail isn't all it's cracked up to be. It seems MY FIRST STORY have had a solid increase in popularity over the short amount of time they've been a band. In 2011 members of the piano-pop outfit fromus joined forces Hiroki Moriuchi and formed an alternative-rock powerhouse. 虚言NEUROSE (Kyogen NEUROSE) is their third full length album and shows a solid change in the band's direction taking shape.

It's a nice that the first track "monologue" pays homage to the piano-centric compositions from the band's early days. Soon electronic elements creep in and the intro builds on itself until it blends seamlessly into the title track, "虚言NEUROSE". This song is a high energy crowd-pleaser with open power chords and more atmospheric synth. It breaks down into small haunting piano interludes that are the dynamic strength of the track. Sadly, the song ends up being forgettable and blends into about 10 other similar tunes in my memory if I try to recall anything specific about it afterwards. Further down the tracklist, "ROOM" has more personality in spades and the guitar riff has a quirky bounce to it that leaves it stuck in your brain. The song has a focused electricity to it that would make it perfect for anyone looking for driving music. And each part of it feels necessary to make the energy climb sky high. Even Hiroki's scream, while it's the same wild animalistic cry we got in "虚言NEUROSE" was called for and it didn't cut in like some abrupt interruption. "ROOM" felt more like MY FIRST STORY's version of what is popular right now, and not cloning someone else's version of it.

The album holds a few solid tunes with hints of old school flair that die-hard fans should enjoy, "If I Am.." defines the 'classic' MY FIRST STORY sound while letting the drums take center stage, even riding the fine line of overpowering the vocals at points. The band should explore more of this sound. The simple, stripped down style suits them and shows off the side of them that people fell in love with on their self titled album. "Someday" picks up where "If I Am..." left off and returns to the band's signature style. Drums continue to be the driving force only this time they are armed with electronics and a more intricate vocal melody. The passionate feeling in the vocals steals the show and reveals that Hiroki does have an impressive vocal range. The band took some risks and it's always nice to hear an expansion of their sound. "CHiLD -error-" opens with a monster drum line and plays with some punk influences in skank beats and three chord progressions on guitar. Their experimentation pays off because they didn't over-complicate it. I braced myself for a train wreck but "CHiLD -error-" stays the coarse and ends up being one of my favorites on the album.

On the other hand some songs fell flat and came far too close to ONE OK ROCK territory. I would consider this the most glaring flaw on 虚言NEUROSE. It's hard enough not to have comparison based on the Moriuchi brothers' similar voices, but in a perfect world that is where the comparisons would end. MY FIRST STORY is encroaching on a style ONE OK ROCK is already famous for. It's a bad move any way you slice it. The most disappointing of all were promotional tracks like "Black Rail" and "Fake" that were sent out to define this album and end up sounding like tired, cliché filler. This was exacerbated by bad tracklist placement. "Drive Me" and "Monochrome effector" came up short. While both had cool intros that stood out, the songs themselves didn't deliver and rested on the band's laurels with dull compositions. "Zero Gravity" is the summit of this album and harbors full-tilt screamed verses with fervent guitar-heavy aggression supporting it. The song has an unusual layering effect where the sung choruses have lower volume screams behind them that do not blend very well. It leaves me confused as to what direction they wanted to go or if it was simply a bad experiment. The song has another identity crisis soon after that and takes on an EDM(-ish) section that then tries to marry all three elements together and fails, leaving this album's climax rather anti-climactic.

The band themselves are adept musicians. The changes in their writing style shows they have the ability to grow and evolve as necessary. They can play a multitude of styles well. Now, this bias may be defined by my musical taste from an American perspective, but a band having it's own musical identity is a big part of what makes them worth listening to. 虚言NEUROSE has a few songs that I would recommend, but mostly it's a letdown. There's far too much filler and the songs that give them their own identity play second fiddle to other songs that resemble what other bands, much too close to home, already do better. MY FIRST STORY are a relatively young band, and they have a lot of time left to find themselves. I hope this album ends up as an experimental addition to their catalog and not a transitional one. Continuing down this path will only place them in an already overcrowded cannibalistic market that lets the trends define them instead of creating those trends.

Looks matter in any manner of music that is sold by the standard music industry model. They're counting on you to pick up that CD because the boys/girls looked hot/cool in the poster or the music video, or when they opened up for that more popular band you went to see in concert. Some genres rely more heavily on those images than others, but it's still there and that's why I've never felt shame for certain bands I got into for the looks or the crazy personalities of the members. Granted, the music should be what ultimately makes people decide to stay or not. But most people aren't going to pick up that CD based on nothing at all. And basic laws of attraction are the simplest to use against the consumer so the industry goes with what works.

I feel kinda bad because there are certain musicians I don't particularly care for their music but I do follow them on social media or blog their pictures because I'm attracted to them or like their fashion sense. But I don't try to hide that under the guise of being a fan of their band. Like Sho Asakawa from Plasticzooms. I don't really like their music all that much, but I like Sho. I like his pictures and his asthetic, and he seems like a genuinely nice person. I just think the difference here is some people just need to admit to themselves its okay if you don't like the music. You can still appreciate the people who make it without shame. At least, I do. :/

doombox reacted to ghost in #13: OUT OF BLUE by APOGEE
Artist: APOGEE Album: OUT OF BLUE Score: If you like to dance then OUT OF BLUE may be for you. Serendipitous moments in life are my favorite. You’ll be going about your usual way and then run into a band like APOGEE. They’re a four-man powered synth-pop group with heavy influences from New Wave and 80’s music. And, their music is very danceable.

We’re introduced to the album with "Runaway Summer", a fairly slow track but exciting enough to make you tap your feet. The chorus is simple but catchy and you’ll find yourself singing along every time it plays. And, those syncopated synth chords will undoubtedly bring you back to the 80’s. Things really get down with "Tonight". It opens with a double bass and snare blast and launches you into a groove so infectious you’ll wish there was a dance floor nearby. The use of electric guitar adds a nice edgy sound to the song too. It’s a really fun track and I find myself coming back to it a lot. The only drawback for me is the rather abrupt ending.

"Losing You" keeps the album’s energy going but brings a more sobering mood to the album. It features a catchy little electronic cadence and some really great vocal work in the second melody. "Out of Blue" slows the pace down but retains the groove from prior songs. It’s relaxing and the swelling synths add an otherworldly atmosphere. As a side-note, the filter used on the vocals reminds me of vocals from the band Electric Light Orchestra.

The New Wave influences are a lot more apparent in "Twilight Arrow" from the wonky bass line to the various clinks and clanks of metallic electronic noises. There’s a steady rhythm set by the kick drum and in the chorus everything flows together nicely. Near the end, the song picks up into something funkier and breaks out into an exciting sequence. The synths here can be a little obnoxious though. "Fall into the Sky" is a wonderful ballad that combines a traditional Japanese sound with their electronic synth sound. It’s split into two parts, a milder soft section that focuses on the vocals and a more powerful section that emphasizes the synth and other instruments. I love the sampled voice they use in the beginning (and later throughout the song); it adds a very cute and Japonesque quality to the song without breaking the mood.

After all that build up I’m ready for something upbeat. But instead, "A Boy in the river" is next. By no means is it a bad song though. It’s a laid-back track that continues off the more traditional Japanese sound. Simple and short, A Boy in the river is a nice casual listen. The album does pick up again with "Fictionalizer". It begins strong with the synth and drums and maintains a steady pace. About halfway through though, I had hoped that the song would come to some sort of climax, but the same melody and rhythm kept playing. It repeats three times and the song goes nowhere. It’s a bit of a downer to be honest.

We finally come to the close of the album with "Transit". It’s another ballad but plays entirely off their electronic sound. In fact, it reminds me of the disbanded electro-rock/new wave band school food punishment. It starts with one note, held forever. It grows louder and louder, intensifying. Another note joins in. It keeps growing louder and louder until the songs starts and the note slowly fades away. When the song starts, it’s a slow and steady rhythm with a repeating keyboard cadence. For much of the song, the same melancholy beat and melody is played. But, when it gets to the chorus, the vocals become a beautiful A Capella. It’s the perfect calm ending to the album.

APOGEE is a fun band. They make fun music that a lot of people can enjoy, and they do a fantastic job of mixing in different influences while staying unique. OUT OF BLUE is an album that stands well as an entire package and by its individual songs. I came upon the album by chance but it’ll definitely stay with me for years to come. Now let’s go hit dat dance floor.

See, this is where you lose me. At no point should someone have to make a tradeoff between depth and breadth of musical inclinations. As long as you continue to like music, they go hand in hand. The more music that you discover, the more you know where your tastes lie, what you like and what you don't. This is important.
I'll use @paradoxal as an example. para is the biggest visual kei indie head I'm familiar with on this forum. She follows all of the new bands and knows who is trending and who isn't, and is extremely comfortable with listening to a fraction of all the music visual kei has to offer. Yet she found something to love in Charisma.com, which is an artist she would have never exposed herself to on her own. She only realized she enjoyed their music when she took a leap of faith and decided to try something new, even if it came with the risk of not enjoying it. And in turn, I would have never discovered Charisma.com if CAT5 didn't put us all on one day. Sitting in the chat box for a day is one of the most mind blowing things you can do on MH. Everybody in the chat is always recommending music to everyone else and all of our tastes rub shoulders. As a matter of fact, most of the bands that I have in my library now are bands that have been recommended to me by other people from the chat. I don't actually seek out any new music, but my musical collection grows in new and unexpected ways due to people like @CAT5, @Champ213, @sai, @Jigsaw9, , @Bear, @leafwork, @Peace Heavy mk II, and @paradoxal, among other people. Right now I'm downloading something @sai recommended to me yesterday for no other reason than she thought I would like it. As long as someone is willing to try new things, their music collection will only grow.
I would even wager that most of us showed up here because someone else put us on to visual kei first - whether that be a mysterious YouTube uploader or a friend that really, really likes the GazettE - and we all decided to try something new. But a lot of fans don't even try new things within the confines of just visual kei. They're fine with being familiar only with the new band of the week - and I would know because I was there once too. From LIPHLICH to DISH, from Wagakki-Band to Kagrra, from Hollowgram to the god and death stars, there are plenty of different types of visual kei bands that all have different aesthetics and styles and approach music differently, yet there's as much of a schism between -core visual kei bands and other visual kei bands as there is between visual kei and not visual kei music. You can chalk it up to "musical differences" but I think there's more at play.
And at the end of the day, we all showed up here because we decided to try something new, so when does that change and why? It's the elephant in the room nobody wants to address because it requires taking a good, hard look at our own biases.

There's nothing wrong with it, but there's a HUGE difference between only being into hip hop/metal/punk/classical music/whatever and only VK as I see and have experienced it: people who listen to VK tends to be into a SHITLOAD of genres (nu metal, metalcore, progressive metal, rock, pop, electronica, goth, punk), so it obviously have nothing to do with being close-minded as far as the music goes, because they're usualy very open-minded and tend to enjoy plenty of genres. So this quite obviously have nothing to do with the music itself, but something else. The image? Or maybe they feel unique listening to VK? I wouldn't know. If they, like the hip hop, classical music or metal fan only are only into one genre it would've been something else, but they're not. They're simply not into just one genre, they're into a scene and enjoy plenty of different genres, unlike the one that exclusively listens to hip hop, which is one genre.

As far as image goes, it's quite important to look good/cool/whatever to gain attention to themself and make people check you out, and this goes for all genres. I check out band because of their image, and I check out albums because of their cover art. But I don't judge the music itself because of either things, that's when it gets stupid IMO, when someone "choose" to continue listen to band A because they look better, despite liking the music of band B way better.

That's perfectly fine that VK no longer sustains your interests - just be wary of allowing your shift in opinion to digress into some kind of hypocritically jaded hatred for the scene and it's fans.
I say this because all too often people who experience these kinds of evolutionary moments in their musical journeys feel the need to criticize, belittle and demean their past phases in an attempt to validate their current interests. One needn't do that, because when it comes to music, your tastes are substantial regardless of what you listen to and regardless of what anyone else thinks.
Although I definitely understand the need to have your tastes validated...it's something that feeds the ego (which i think we're all hardwired to do). But once you realize how purely ego-driven it all is, then I think you'll realize how fruitless of an endeavor seeking such validation can be and that music taste (in this case your shift in music taste) isn't that big of a deal.
But hey, none of us are supreme enlightened beings (except for Bear - he's pretty perfect ^__~) and we're all guilty of seeking validation and just wanting to reaffirm ourselves in many ways. So to answer your question again - is it a bad thing that you've lost interest in VK? Absolutely not! Listen to whatever appeals to you - just remember that everything appeals to someone, so even if you've lost interest in it, at least try to maintain some level of respect for the scene and it's fans. ;3

No one is mad because you want to listen to other music. VK isn't a prison. You can go explore other things. Heck, you might even come back to it some day. *le gasp*
