Actually, there has been a lot of controversy over the exhibitionist fanservice when it first premiered, eventually it died down pretty quick. I admit it bothered me at first because I always welcome a badass female main character which is so rare nowadays, but when the show sexualizes her to death, it gave me a massive facepalm. Given that this is the same people who did Gurren Lagann, it's something I should've seen coming. On the business side, it makes sense for them to do this because most of Japan's audience are brainless otakus who care more about the appearance rather than the substance, so more money for them. The way these shows are stylized, you're gonna have to take the fanservice as it is since that's just mere sheep's clothing to the actual meat of the story. Despite of its questionable merits, I find the show entertaining overall. Don't force yourself to watch something that bothers you to that extent. No one is forcing you.

On a side note, I just started making a Kill la Kill AMV.

Recently got around to watching and catching all the way up on both Nisekoi and No-rin and I have to say both shows are really good. Nisekoi is done by SHAFT which is probably one of my favorite studios. No-rin is like a less serious comedic version of Silver Spoon with some pretty great gag moments XD seriously it might be the funniest show this season, I'm kinda in love with it.

Nice. Kill la Kill is definitely making big moves the past few episodes

Durarara!! is also a really good show, one of my favorites from the past 5 years! Kyoukai was pretty decent and the animation is some of the best I've seen in a while, Norigami so far has been okay but I've heard it's gonna get a lot better later on... as for psycho pass it's pretty awesome despite it's flaws. It looks like you have chosen a good little crop of shows to watch, good job!

Next on the list is Durarara (or whatever it's called), Kyoukai no Kanata, Norigami and Psycho Pass.

Can't people just listen to the music and enjoy it and then leave it at that? Who really cares about how we should define visual kei or what it is for that matter? Why do we have to come up with a cause for why vk is what it is? does it matter?

These are the question I'm asking myself as i read through this thread... also I see this is gonna go no where just like every single discussion about this topic in the history of this forum has always gone nowhere.

Right. That's four bands. The visual kei scene is small, but not that small. The amount of bands that disband due to lack of money also say otherwise.

No. Japan has one of the most homogenous countries in the world with a complete and total culture of conformity. In fact the Japanese have a saying that reflects it: "the nail that sticks up gets hammered down". I am no expert on Japanese culture, but the writing on the wall is clear.

No, it's a rewording of the conformity paradox. Visual kei in and of itself is very conformist, which is ironic considering it is widely believed to have started as a movement for freedom of expression.

    I don't think so.

    Lost 10/20 Years

Actually, I would have expected someone to say that I've said much of nothing by not defining what visual kei is and instead indirectly defining what it is by it's constituents. I haven't pigeonholed visual kei at all because I refuse to define it.

Original Saku got a reaction from TheStoic in Have you ever successfully converted someone to Japanese music?
No. most people where I live can't get pass the language barrier and are too narrow minded... not to mention they're all into this radio rap/pop bullshit that's popular here for some reason, so I doubt they even appreciate good music to begin with.

I however have successfully converted quite a few friends into watching subbed anime over dubbed xD

We Are What We Are - Piss fucking boring horrordrama that actually made me fell asleep a couple of times, something which have happened 2-3 during my life. That kinda says it all, doesn't it? It's a remake of a Mexican film, which from what I read has a shitload in comming with the awful The Hamiltons. But no, there was absolutely nothing throughout this film that caught my interest. Poor, poor film.

Psycho - Alfred Hitchcock was a genius and one of the biggest and best directors ever, and Psycho is his absolute best film. Need I say any more? No.

I answered this question a while ago. It's neither, although it leans closer to being a scene. It may have started out as a genre at one point but it's long since surpassed those boundaries. It cannot be a genre because not every visual kei band plays the same type of music. For any genre you name, someone else can find a band that considers themselves visual kei that don't play that genre. Visual kei is simply music with a focus on visuals (hence visual style). Visual kei can't be pigeonholed into a scene or a genre without losing some of the picture.
And in case you missed my answer from before:

The way this question is phrased is deceptive since you already assume visual kei is a genre. In the sense that it has elements of a genre, it's sometimes easy to tell that a band is visual by looking at them. Othertimes, it's so subtle that it shouldn't matter. I'll never know if I'll like them until I hear a preview, because visual bands can look like anything and play whatever they want.

Looks mean nothing to me and I happen to think most visual kei bands look terrible. Once again, I don't care as long as the band sounds great.

In the Visual Kei scene, no. Visual kei covers a lot of different genres, but the concentration seems to be around either pop or metalcore. It's not time effective to do so.

No, I just repost the answer to question one and wait for the inevitable lack of response.

    See answer number one.

I believe this might be right up your alley. One thing I have to make clear that's pretty much necessary is if you start watching and finish the first season, you have to watch the second season! it's imperative that you watch both because otherwise you'll be lost. the second season explains everything that happens in the first. Without it, it would be like watching a movie halfway through and then stopping. I would also recommend watching the first OVA series Rei. since it is also relevant. the rest can be ignored unless you want to be complete.

Here's my (late) breakdown of the season so far:
Nobunaga the Fool is two seconds away from being dropped but manages to keep me hooked each week. It irritates me to no end how much lack of exposition there is in this show. We know the basics behind the history but we still don't know the why's behind what happens, which lessens the significance of what I do understand. After five episodes of pure random, with people coming out of left field to murder someone, steal something, or otherwise push forward a plot I only understand 50% of, the show pokes fun at this by recapping everything as "yeah, you're not supposed to understand that" and then continues on with one of the most unexpected episodes of anime this week. I'll continue watching because I want to know what he does next, but if they don't start piecing things together it's getting dropped.
Nobunagun is campy, dorky, shounen fun with echoes of Pacific Rim every single episode. It's not the greatest anime I've ever watched, and the OP animation reeks of 4Kids Saturday morning cartoon block editing, but it's doing a good enough job to keep me interested. I guess. The rest of this anime season is pretty awful.
Kill la Kill is fantastic. The constant delays are not. 'Nuff said.
Hunter x Hunter is finally making big moves, but they choose to up the suspension each episode and take their time telling the story instead of jumping into action. And considering how much of this anime season is mindless action that makes no fucking sense, this is a good change from what's normall.
Witch Craft Works is another anime with a bunch of things going on that I as the viewer am not supposed to understand yet. It's reverse shounen with harem elements and a defined love interest, except one main character is Superman powerful and almost indestructible with limitless power, the other is useless, and both are dull as bricks. I'm probably not going to finish this one.
Both Hajime no Ippo: Rising and Basketball Z Kuroko no Baske are overstaying their welcome a bit. I have no idea how long these episodes are supposed to be, but the last few episodes of Ippo were filler before the big fights (which are really all I care about) and Kuroko finally reached the end of the most dramatic basketball match yet. And I say dramatic because while a lot happened, you would think these guys are playing to save the world and not to win a trophy with the way the show conveys things.
I always watch Log Horizon last on Saturdays because it just feels right, but they desperately need to jump into the action. Too many shows that should dive right in to the action are sticking their toes into the water, and those that could take fifteen or twenty minutes to explain what's going on are already halfway across the sea. Enough backstory has been established for things to really turn up, and the events of last episode should be the perfect catalyst for that. Considering how much everyone slipped in the game, ending the season without the big fight I'm expecting will be a big letdown.
