@monkeybanana4 I’m the same, I think Sheik was my first choice until I used Marth just because I found Marth easier to use. Peach is fun to use too!

I really liked the 3DS version it was really fun and nice to have as a portable game, and I couldn’t get a Wii U at the time for the Wii U version, my fiancée and I used to play the 3DS version with each other a lot, and we’ll still bring Brawl out every once in a while! The best thing about Smash is every game is timeless. The characters I’m using in Ultimate atm are Marth, Lucina, Sonic, Little Mac, Fox, Falco and Ganondorf. Ganondorf is looking to be a favourite as they gave him a speed boost

I’m more than willing to sit and learn techniques for hours, I find it fun! I graduate from university in March and have graduation in July so I may have time after March to make a start! One thing I’ve always been pretty good at is spiking opponents, there’s no better feeling than jumping off the edge with your opponent and down A them in to the void xD If I get good enough I’ll check out a tournament or two, if there is any local to me xD

@TheZigzagoon Cool! I play with Marth as well. He wasn't the first character I used, but when I discovered him, I really liked him. So he's always been a favorite of mine. I was really sad when his moves got downgraded in later games, though. Besides Marth, I also play with Pikachu and Peach.

That is interesting because I also have friends who spend more time playing Brawl (or the 3DS/Wii U version) rather than Melee. Some of them play casually and others play competitively. It's a weird mixed bag. But I think that's a nice aspect of the Smash community. You can met all kinds of neat people who love the same game. It's nice to hear Smash Ultimate is returning to the Melee roots. I'll need to save up some money to buy it since it sounds like a great game. Have you found characters you like to use in Smash Ultimate yet?

I feel you there. There's a lot of techniques to learn and master, but I think that's half the fun. One technique I remember trying to master was Marth's Down A move (in the air). Finding the sweet spot to quickly finish opponents was challenging, but when I pulled it off, it felt very rewarding. I did play competitively for a bit (sadly, not good enough to play in any tournaments, though, lol). Unfortunately, these days I don't really have time to  You should totally join a local tournament when you feel confident enough to test out your skills

@monkeybanana4 I agree with that so much, Melee is definitely a timeless classic! I play with Marth, Falco and Jigglypuff when it comes to Melee! How about you?

Interestingly enough, my partner and our friends prefer Brawl to Melee, but they play Smash casually rather than competitive and my partner loves the story mode in Brawl. I felt so salty towards Nintendo when they tried to demand that Evo shouldn’t stream Melee, I’m glad that Nintendo are turning things around and are looking in to the competitive world even more! Smash Ultimate allows so many opportunities for combos this time around, and I’ve found that it leads to some really intense and fun aerial battles and juggling combos which I think is a pretty big staple in most fighting games.

I’m gonna put a survey out with permission from the university first and maybe see if I can make it a society so I can get help with equipment, I don’t think they’d allow it unless I proved there was demand for it. Generally I play competitive, but I’m still learning a lot from the game, certainly not confident enough to try a tournament yet xD do you play competitive?

@TheZigzagoon Nice. I think it doesn't matter when you got to play it. Melee is the kind of game, which will last through time, and can be enjoyable to anyone of all ages. Even now, I still return to play Melee because of how addictive it can be. It really set the foundation for later games whether for casual or competitive play. Which character(s) do you prefer to use?

Yeah, I recall when Brawl first came out. It faced the intense criticism and divided the fandom in half. Some people blatantly disliked Brawl while others embraced it. I think it was quite a sad time because in the end it's still the Smash series we all loved. Another tidbit mentioned in the documentary that I found interesting was when Nintendo almost would not allow EVO to stream the competition live. It was such a huge controversy when it happened. Nonetheless, I'm glad to hear that the new Smash Ultimate has started to embrace the competitive scene. I remember hearing that Brawl and the 3DS/Wii U versions took out all potential for combos and techniques advanced players used. Is that still the case with Smash Ultimate? By the way, I heard even more characters will be added to the roaster through DLC.

That's cool to hear! It's always nice to see local Melee tournaments being set up because you get to meet other Smash fans who equally enjoy the game. I'm sure it'll be successful since Smash, and Melee, is such a popular game with many dedicated fans  Do you play Smash competitively or casually?

@monkeybanana4 Melee is honestly one of my favourite games ever, even though I only managed to play it when I was 18 and got a job as I was never allowed a GameCube as a child, only the PlayStation 2. I had only played Brawl and Smash 3DS. Despite being so late to the party, I immediately was hooked to Melee, and have had countless hours enjoying it!

I found the divide of Melee and Brawl interesting too, even more so when you look at the scene today and Melee is still played, and Brawl isn’t. As the documentary states, it’s clear that Brawl was not intended to be played competitive, and it’s almost as if Sakurai and Nintendo pushed for that to be the case. I’ve been playing Ultimate recently, and it’s really good! I think Sakurai and Nintendo recognise the importance of the competitive scene, so much so that they’ve actually started balancing their characters now.

Despite missing out on the main competitive scene for Melee, I’m actually planning on seeing if there’s any interest in my university to see a Melee tournament be set up, just something small that both casual and competitive players can enjoy!

Thank you for sharing the link to the documentary! It was long, but very insightful. It charts the growth of the scene, which started from a few people who passionately loved the game and grew into the major competitive scene it is today.

I don't play competitively, but Smash is one of my favorite game series. Melee, in particular, was one of the first video games I played and spent many hours playing alone or with friends. I remember that was the game everyone would play at the time. Whenever friends got together or there were parties, that was the game everyone played.

I think it's interesting how they talk about the divide of the Smash community when Brawl came out because it still exists today. (Hence, the creation of Project M.) One interesting criticism is every latest installment of Smash that comes out further alienates the competitive community, which is a shame since many popular video games continue to grow because of the competitive scene. (Is that the case with the latest one released on the Switch? I haven't bought it/kept up with it unfortunately.) What I find most intriguing is how Nintendo seems to be actively against competitive playing. I guess maybe it has to do with the fact that they brand themselves to be a company, which caters to family and kids.

It stinks that the timing didn't work out for you  It sounded like such an exciting time to get involved in the competitive scene, too.

(Sorry for the long comment ^^; I hope it made sense, lol.)

@Manji 卍 That's awesome! Guitar is an amazing instrument. Like the others have said, you should totally go for it. Music is a great way to express oneself, so don't let anything stop you from doing that.

As for resources, along with YouTube and books, there are many online sites with free guidance on how to read music/play acoustic guitar. There are also many sites that have free guitar scores for practice. When you start learning and ever need any help reading music, then don't hesitate to ask. (I'm not an expert on the guitar, but reading music is the same for all instruments.)
