Co-signing everything emmny said. Learning your scales helps a lot and starting on acoustic, build up those calluses.

I'm no virtuoso to be sure but when I first started I learned a lot of 3 chord punk songs, or big 4 chord pop progressions. I did learn how to read tabs but that's really it. I was never out to be a lead guitarist though, I only picked it up to fill in rhythm in the bands I was in or to write basic melodies for demos. So if you're looking for higher level expertise I can only recommend youtube for some free lessons because you can find basically everything there. That's where I go to figure out something that stumps me and have it explained.

uhhh i started with stuff i didn't even like all that much, like little exercises and stuff, simple riffs for classic songs. i went through all the simple major chords eventhough i didn't want to do them, but it was really helpful since i was in a lot of pain at first (acoustic isn't for pussies cough cough!) so i got used to holding my fingers down. its little stuff like that to focus on in the beginning because it helps you do the more complicated stuff later [this is what my instructor taught me]. kelly's right with the punk songs and chord progressions, that's a great way to start.

i started with lessons (then i stopped) and magically got better. to this day, i don't know about theory but i can play some kickass rhythm guitar.
tbh the best way to learn is to challenge yourself if you remain self taught. its really hard for a few months, but after you get past that learning curve, everything becomes a lot easier. stuff you found really hard 3 months ago becomes easy, and stuff that seems impossible soon becomes doable. thats a lot of the fun in learning guitar, once your baseline is laid, a lot of the intermediate stuff comes easier.
i hope this makes some sense. its an unconventional approach, its a lot slower than learning lessons and theory, but in absence of the two, that is what has worked for me in the past 4 years.

@PHMK2, GOKI being closer to the original DK than the current DK can probably be explained with a blog entry Yuuga made (cba to find it now), but he said that Gokiburi is what he considers "fun and games", while DK is where he really makes music he likes. So Goki was more or less a Yuuga tribute band (at least until Kazuto were added to the line-up).

I think Yuuga may consider them to be two completely different bands since I don't believe they ever play any songs from their first era. Stylistically, they're a lot closer to GOKIBURI's 2nd era, which is confusing since GOKIBURI's 1st era is a lot closer to DEViL KiTTY's 1st era and often covered their songs
I'm actually working on a post that explains how all of Yuuga's bands copy one another and which songs originate where

Different eras, different members. Yuuga (vocal) is the only member who was part (and leader) of both "bands".

itsukoii reacted to CAT5 in what's your method of finding new bands to listen to?
These days, I mostly rely on my friends/social network for good recommendations and a select few sites. Altho in the past, when I was more passionate about finding new music, I'd literally spend hours scouring sites like myspace (yes, i'm THAT old lol), m4247 (now dead) links on band websites, last.fm, and just ANYTHING with information about bands. p2p/pirating was a huge help too.
For you, I would recommend stopping by our sessions @dubtracks, as with the variety of stuff played there, you're almost guaranteed to hear something that piques your interest. I would also recommend joining the trade-offs here, as they're a good way to potentially find new music, expose yourself to new things, find out more about what you like/don't like, etc, and just interface with the users here!

browse similar artists of bands on last.fm listen to some samples on youtube and check out the related videos section. looking at other bands your favorite bands play with is not a bad idea either~ it just takes a lot of searching!
