Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives - Because who wouldn't wanna see something with that title??!! Nice little grindhouse-homagey revenge type thingie... I was surprised that the tone was quite serious in some places but it was cool nevertheless. Was good to see Willam in a movie finally, heh.

Yes! Not sure how much you care for Divine, but last year the world saw the release of the documentary I Am Divine, obviously about Divine. I haven't seen it yet, but it's supossed to be pretty fucking amazing. Really looking forward to watching it.

 

Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives sounded interesting as well. Will check out!

 

Hit and Run - Pretty fun action comedy with Kristen Bell og Dax Shepard. There's nothing new here, but it was really enjoyable. Cool cars, silly characters and over the top dialog. There was a few really, eally, really over the top hilarious scenes here that had me in tears laughing. Childish as fuck, but funny! The budget was about $2 000 000, and half of that was used to secure the rights to different songs used. Amusing.

 

Dax Shepard uses his own cars, does his own stunts and so on. They couldn't afford doing anything else, but with him being a car freak I am sure he enjoyed it a lot.

 

M - Fritz Lang saw this as his best film, and so it is regarded by many a man as well. I don't quite agree with that. It's not on par with Metropolis, but who'd expect that anyway? This was Fritz Lang's first sound movie and it is a brilliant piece of film making. Crime/thriller of the best quality there is. Top notch from begining to end. If you don't like this you probably don't like crime/thrillers to begin with. It's like enjoying heavy metal and not liking Judas Priest's best albums. It's not really possible, is it? Nah. Fantastic film!

 

Dawn of the Dead (2004) - When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth!

 

This is, hands down, one of th ebest remakes ever. It's not up there with the original of course. It lacks the story, the horror and fear, the humour and smartness of the original, but it' still a great film. Top notch,old school special effects and all that. Just my cup of tea. Great film!

 

It's really a shame Zack Snyder went in Christoher Nolan's foot steps. From the amazing (Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen) to the pathetic (Sucker Punch, Man of Steel (not seen this yet, but I don't give a fuck. It's shite all right).

 

It's just how Chistopher Nolan went from amazing (Following Memento, Batman Begins) to the overly pathetic (The Dark Knight, The Darkn Knight Rises, Inception). It's sad really.

 

I understand why. I can understand the temptation of bigger productions, more money and a huge name among the regular movie goes (aka the regular man in the street), but this is not how you end up in history book. You'll not become one of the great names of films by doing this shit. I think it's a bit pathetic.

Snowpiercer - I've been waiting 1,5-2 years to see this with great expectations and it didn't disappoint me. This is the kind of film where every time you rewatch it, you notice new things. Beautiful cinematography and directing. There is still some "problems" in this film and I understand some people won't like this because of them but I loved it. 8,5/10 Btw, this is better than Kim Jee-Woon and Park Chan-Wook's english language debuts.

 

 

Disconnect - To put it simply, this is like "Crash" but instead of racism it's about internet and communication. I love and hate this kind of movies because they make you realise what a shitty fucking place this world is. 7,5/10

Sounds great. I am really looking forward to this one. I've got almost too big of expextations.

 

And both Kim Jee-Woon and Park Chan-Wook's english language debuts were really good. Especially Park Chan-Wook's Stoker is f'ing fabulous!

Also agreed, Stoker was an interesting experience.

 

Dogtooth [a.k.a. Kynodontas] - F'ed up movie about a family keeping their kids (well they're practically almost grown ups I guess) locked away from the outside world. Not your usual locked-up torture flick tho, still, quite sick. Not much story to it but it was good for one watch.

 

Naked Killer - Hilarious early '90s action/crime movie from Hong Kong... totally over the top and cheesy, and full of ridiculous dialogue and great moments. Nicely vivid and clear visuals too (and lotsa boobies and that sort of stuff, hah).

* note @Bear: the main villain is the same actress as in Red Nights

What exactly was it that you had expected? What let you down, and what "promises" did it "break"?

 

!!!  Spoiler warning: only read if you finished season one of True Detective (or if you don't care about spoilers) !!!

 

All hints towards a complex and intense mystery were thrown out of the window once the villain came on screen. I'm sure this person wasn't the only one involved, but the writers didn't seem to care about unraveling it all. I got the impression that the writers set up something bigger than they could handle. One example would be the thing about the green painted house which was a cheap way out. It may have been foreshadowed earlier in the series, but I couldn't help thinking "really, this is it? This is all they needed after all this time?"

 

A series where detective work is involved should not depend on a little thing they figure out (by mere chance!) near the end of the series. Especially when it leads to just one boring villain and nothing else.

 

I love how they kept it a character study till the very end... the two main characters were very interesting to follow. But the one thing that required these two people to connect: the murder case(s), was disappointing.

Aha, I see. I guess we had a totally different experience and expectations from the series then. I thought it was absolute brilliant, and there wasn't a single aspect of the series that disappointed me.

Yeah, I've seen it and I think it's great. Naked Weapon is also recommended. It's a similar type of film written by Wong Jing, same who wrote Naked Killer. This one stars Maggie Q. Enjoyable films IMO. But I'm very much into sleaze cinema, if one can call it that. Love it.

Hell of Wheels, season 1 - Cowboy series set not too long after American Civil War. The sets looks good, the acting are above par and the story is allright. But not matter how much you twist and turn, at the end of the day it doesn't feel like much more than a poor man's Deadwood, and that's a real shame. I was really hoping for so much more than that. But it was decent, and I was enjoyed, so I will continue watching it.

 

The Swede is amazing, though.

47 Ronin (2013)

 

I have to admit I haven't seen the earlier movies about the tale of 47 Ronin although I probably should, because this one was horrible.

 

They tried to add way too many different elements that are pointless to the story. Fantasy creatures, witchcraft and whatnot.I think I also saw an orc or troll or whatever in there. And on top of that, samurai Keanu Reeves. The movie would've been better without any of those, because they bring nothing to the movie.

And why does every person speak english? The Last Samurai is a Hollywood movie and they spoke Japanese in it.

 

The writing is also bad and the writers are treating viewers like idiots. Example: In a dialogue, if anybody mentions a Japanese word such as seppuku etc. they continue by explaining what that word means. Why would japanese person explain that to another japanese? Isn't that like saying "You must now commit a suicide. By the way, suicide means killing yourself."

 

Only thing that kind of surprised me in a good way was the ending. And that's just because I wasn't very familiar with the original story.

 

5/10. I gave some extra points because visually beautiful setting, and I'm a weeaboo after all.

Snowpiercer - International debut (I think?) of the Korean director who made The Host, with a nice cast (Tilda Swinton, yayyy). Kinda typical distopian story with the only interesting bit being the setting - which is a big-ass train holding what's left of humanity after the start of an artificially induced ice age type thingie (good job, scientists! lol). Anyway, it was pretty epic, lots of cool visuals and interesting bits.

I liked it! Better than 4, not on 1 and 3's levels, but surely a nice story, expanding the universe. However, I think they should wrap it up on the next one, to avoid that things become too convoluted.

I'll keep nagging on about it thought. Every single thread becomes way more interesting if one writes a little about what they think of the film/album/song. Just writle a title, a list and nothing more are what makes threads uninteresting. But to each their own I guess.

 

 

And for anny horror fans on the forum, take a lot at this thread, and feel free to join. If I end up doign this alone I'll stop doing it pretty fast. And as I said, there's no need to be a horror maniac like myself. If you only have one, two or five films feels free to write down those. The more people, the better.

I agree with you though, sadly we can't force people to do that. Plainly listing a movie/anime you've seen without giving feedback feels a bit pointless to me but like you said, to each their own.

 

I don't watch a lot of movies in general, I usually prefer TV shows because I really don't have an attention span for movies, whoops.

Alright, that's good enough for me. The following part may contain spoilers for the NBC show Hannibal.

 

I recently tried that Hannibal show from NBC because so many people were hyping it, but I'm quite divided on it. When I found out the director was Bryan Fuller I sort of felt hesitant, as I never liked any show he made. I sort of hoped the show would include a level of quality as found in the movie of Silence of the Lambs, but I felt like it fell short in the character interaction department. The chemistry in that movie between Hannibal and Clarice was so incredibly intense and had me on the edge of my seat all the time. That sort of chemistry sincerely lacks between Hannibal and Will, yet seems more apparent during Lecter's interactions with his own therapist; Bedelia du Maurier (could be a woman-only thing, I don't know. I feel like both Bedelia and Clarice were more on Hannibal's level than Will was).

 

Mikkelsen does a fine job as Hannibal (especially considering he has to live up to Anthony Hopkins' fantastic performance), but Dancy's performance as Will Graham doesn't leave me convinced. Guy responds a bit too calmly about vomiting out an ear and randomly seeing stags getting out of a river, lol.

 

Also this has to be the dumbest FBI investigation team I've seen since The Mentalist. Each episode contains a new victim, but they don't seem to get any progress whatsoever until Hannibal cleverly puts the blame on Will. This show is like a combination of horror and thriller but it doesn't know which way to go so it mashes up a little bit of both, which doesn't necessarily HAVE to be bad, but it feels too messy for my taste. I hope it'll get better, but for now I've put it on hold.

 

Also, it seems like NBC can't get the rights for Clarice Starling from MGM for later seasons (for some reason I'm relieved?).

 

I'm also currently watching The Mentalist, Castle and The Blacklist. I casually watch Unforgettable as well, but not as often as the other three. I started the Blacklist a few weeks ago and it's quite a thrilling series.

Choke - Nice drama-comedy hybrid, a bit satirical with some bitter and dark humor. Watched it cuz it's based on the Chuck Palahniuk novel of the same title. I don't really remember how closely it follows the book but I think the movie is a bit lighter and more easy-going. Still, it was okay for watching once, maybe for a second time in the future.

Big Bad Wolves - Apparently Tarantino said something like this was the best movie of last year... Well, I wouldn't vouch for that but it was a decent and pretty cool experience. This flick is like a mashup of drama, thriller, black comedy and some very toned-down torture porn, and rises some interesting moral questions. All in all, quite a nice movie - reminded me of those Korean revenge themed flicks a bit.
