Mikuto 7 Posted January 7, 2011 I thought we could have a counterpoint to the "Best growl in VK" thread. I don't like growling, but I love a good voice. I'll start it off with a few of my favorites: YXA7REzrXBo Iml_bAF9Wis
Champ213 1858 Posted January 7, 2011 Sakurai gets my vote too. What I like about him is that he manages to sound a s good live as he does on record, actually I think that sometimes he sounds even better live. And you can hear how he improved a lot over the last 20 years. Personally I was always very fond of Yukiya (Jils, Kain, etc) as well. And there are other examples. I'll post more when I think of some.
Prism 8 Posted January 7, 2011 +1 @ first post. + Gara from Merry. + that guy from heidi. + Tatsurou from Mucc, at times. + No one else comes to mind.
SUBLIMINAL 52 Posted January 7, 2011 I love that the subject is Japanese music in general and not solely VK. So my picks too... Hatis Noit (夢中夢)櫻井敦?? (BUCK-TICK)ユーキ (カリメロ & 蜂-biene-)慎一郎 (ホタル & ジュリィー)HIZUMI (D'espairsRay)想 (emmuree & …。)FULL (a dozen different projects)紺 (NightingeiL, RedCarpet & La'Mule)眞呼 (deadman & kein)手鞠 (amber gris & Ruvie)YUKIYA (JILS, D≒SIRE & Kain)The guy from ROUAGE, name escapes me.Maybe KYO (D'ERLANGER) too. Mikuto 7 Posted January 7, 2011 I love that the subject is Japanese music in general and not solely VK. So my picks too... Hey, I love VK and all it's little bastard genre children, but I'm smart enough to realize that most vk vocalists aren't fantastic singers.
The Libertine 2 Posted January 7, 2011 Sakurai and Ryo are good choices! There are many that I love but when I think of clean I think of Tora (Sel'm) right away. His voice is pure and wonderful. ^^
LIDL 692 Posted January 7, 2011 so not limited to VK right? Atsushi Sakurai (Buck Tick), Hyde (L'Aruku), i admire his falsetto, Teru (GLAY), Ryuuichi (Luna Sea), Ryota Fujimaki (Remioromen), Ryuta Yamamura (flumpool), that guy who i don't know the name (URCHIN FARM) and Susumu Hirasawa are some vocalists that i admire and respect so much. Mikuto 7 Posted January 7, 2011 so not limited to VK right? Absolutely not! Ryuta Yamamura (flumpool) Yes! He has a really lovely voice. How about Apogee, any fans? CCXYS7gyx2c

CAT5 9075 Posted January 7, 2011 As far as female Japanese rock vocalists go, Satoko of me-al art pretty much slaughters the competition in terms of sheer power and grace.
fitear1590 2414 Posted January 7, 2011 That "Apogee" guy/band? sounds great. I'll have to check it out. I tend to like higher pitched male vocalists. LOVE this guy in Spitz tnf5-qg91B0 The guy from Flipper's Guitar wasn't the "best" vocalist, but it's so soft and pleasant to listen to IMO 0d4IUa0pF70 Of course, Icchi from Canzel (sorry I bring him up in every vocalist thread!) di8KB8WOdgw and Shiina Ringo
Mikuto 7 Posted January 7, 2011 That "Apogee" guy/band? sounds great. I'll have to check it out.I tend to like higher pitched male vocalists. Give me a man who can falsetto and I'm happy for life, see Ryo, Apogee vocalist, Flumpool vocalist. To lesser extent, Alibi vocalist. Do you want Apogee? I've got their albums at least, I could post a partial disco.
Aion 184 Posted January 7, 2011 As far as female Japanese rock vocalists go, Satoko of me-al art pretty much slaughters the competition in terms of sheer power and grace. we have a winner
Jigsaw9 6783 Posted January 7, 2011 I think Atsushi Sakurai (BUCK-TICK) and Gara (MERRY) have to be my favorites. Oh, and Kaya too.
Kaleidoscope 195 Posted January 7, 2011 My first choice would definetely be Hizumi (D'espairsRay), his voice has exactly the kind of tone I prefer and he has an awesome mixture of emotion and technique. Technique-wise I would say Gackt, no matter what people think about him, he is an amazing singer and has the most powerful vibrato I have ever heard outside operatic music. Others would be: Daisuke Ochida (Kagerou, the studs) Ryo (9GOATS BLACK OUT) Tatsurou (Mucc) Satoshi (girugamesh) Toshi (X JAPAN) Hatis Noit (Mutyumu) Ryuutarou (Plasti Tree) Satsuki (Rentrer En Soi) Otogi (Awoi) ??林太郎 (although his voice is not really "clean" ;D) There are certainly lots of good singers outside of VK, but tbh not many come to my mind right now, maybe also the guy of The Novembers. 1 Tetora reacted to this

saishuu 3220 Posted January 7, 2011 dKRtXdaTmxw MuY6m61yshY hawfS1VqfAA NR7-dx3Zzw4 And as far as VK goes, I'd say:- Satsuki (RENTRER EN SOI)- Isshi (Kagrra,)- Danchou (NoGoD)- The guy from Clavier- ryo (9GOATS BLACK OUT)- mako (deadman)- Sanaka (Moran/Fatima)- ryo (kannivalism/baroque)- Temari (amber gris/Ruvie)- Mao (SID)- Loki (König/Sugar)- YUNA (The FLARE)- Jui (Vidoll)
dracolicious13 1 Posted January 7, 2011 honestly when you guys say "clean vocals" I picture a boys choir. LOL
Mikuto 7 Posted January 7, 2011 honestly when you guys say "clean vocals" I picture a boys choir. LOL Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought "clean singing" was a common term for vocals without screaming, growling, etc.
allisapp 303 Posted January 7, 2011 The usual: Tatsurou (MUCC) Daisuke (the studs & kagerou) Gara (Merry) ryo (9GOAT BLACK OUT) Takanori Nishikawa (Abingdon Boys School & T.M.Revolution) Atsushi Sakurai (BUCK-TICK) Hyde (L'arc~en~ciel) And also Taka (ONE OK ROCK), Takeshi Hosomi (Ellegarden & the hiatus) and the best: Ta-ma (ROACH) 1 Tetora reacted to this
dracolicious13 1 Posted January 7, 2011 honestly when you guys say "clean vocals" I picture a boys choir. LOL Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought "clean singing" was a common term for vocals without screaming, growling, etc. Really? first time I hear of it. I mean it could be just me..but clean singing/vocals = pure and undamaged by things like smoking, alcohol or anything of the sort. Do not directly have to be damaged, but some people have a rougher sound naturally, but I'd never call their voices clean.
Skidium 15 Posted January 7, 2011 Ryuichi [Luna Sea] Toshi [X JAPAN] Hisayoshi [Rosenfeld] Takeshi [boris] HYDE [L'Arc~en~Ciel] Anna Tsuchiya Lotus Juice Kyo [D'erlanger]
Prism 8 Posted January 7, 2011 "Clean" singing/vocals is the most common term, I find, when differentiating between growling or screaming and singing. Dunno what you're talkin about man.
Number Girl 48 Posted January 7, 2011 ??山田壮平 (andymori) Eizo Sakamoto (Anthem) Jun-ya Kato (Grand Slam) Koshi Inaba (B'z) Yama-B (Gunbridge) Kenichi Asai (BJC) Annie (Blindman) Ryuichi Kawamura (Luna Sea) 高橋良和 (As Meias) Takakazu Okazaki (Onsa)
dracolicious13 1 Posted January 7, 2011 Well like I said, first time I hear of it. But I said what I "clean" singing/vocals means to me, so in that sense some of the choices you guys listed don't make any sense to me. But knowing that it just means no screaming/growling, then yes those choices are right. Though I would be curious to know who you would give the nominations to if you were to use my definition of "clean vocals". Any takers?
