"Mention" feature in posts

Recommended Posts

This had been brought up to my attention when @CAT5 had spoken about it once before. I began noticing how other users and myself would use, as previously done in that sentence, the tag/wrap of [ member= (member name here)] -> [member= CAT5). This highlights the user, but doesn't inform/notify them of that usage. This is a great way to direct a user's attention to a shout out for any reason when someone doesn't use a quotation. For example, the birthday thread. It only highlights a member but doesn't tell them they've been wished a birthday which I think would be nice in case the thread itself goes unnoticed by them. I have also noticed how users might only bold a name or underline it (if everyone were to use the wrap, this might not have crossed my mind), for instance, here when I had happened to stumble upon this post while scrolling. I understand we also have the search funtion to look up our names as well but wouldn't this be more suitable? I also understand the server might need to be updated for this to work but if this is wanted by other users too and that it's not too difficult to make happen, I hope this comes into play at some point. Actually, with an easier thought on this, maybe more colours can happen when it comes to usernames? This is merely some thoughts but thank you for taking notice.

Hope this works...

(beni) -> [member= CAT5)

EDIT: doesnt work, how do I do it beni? D;

Do the same but without the gap between = and the C at the start of cat's name. Where I've underlined, love.

(Aferni) -> [member=CAT5)

EDIT: omg i give up

XD

You have to change the ) at the end into the bracket which is like half a square (it doesn't appear on here) and done! I didn't spot that before, sorry!

This'd be good as a tutorial for those who don't know how to do it or who didn't know aha. Don't worry.

Keep to sticking with changing your post instead of bumping it with more tries. I just realised we're kinda spamming. XD

Edit: ender-chan saves the day. ;-;

, in the formating, you can click the icon that says Special BBCode (to the right of the "eraser") and use the "Member" code there. That's an alternative, in case you can't remember the code  posted.

But back on-topic. If @beni's idea is implementable, then I'm all for it! Could definitely be useful.

I should have said that I also like this idea. It would be really convenient! I just don't know how easy it would be to implement since I'm clueless about these kind of things.

thanks for the info, I wasn't aware at all that we could do this like that (I thought I had to copy/paste the profile link each fucking time, I gave up lmao).

so...

@eiheartx

gotchaaa! Another way to use the BBCode lmao XDDD

But yea, it should be good to be notified when someone cite you somewhere on MH, like quotes. But I doubt that it shouldn't be easy to establish.

The ability to mention users Facebook-style is a feature that has been requested for years and we've looked into adding it before. Rumors are that it will be included in the next big update to IPBoard software, but after three years it's finally made it's way out of beta. It's still not quite ready for production use and they gave us fair warning that things can and probably will break, so we are not updating now. Until it is ready, we will all have to sit tight and wait.

Thank you for getting back! I completely understand, it's good to know it's wanted and I wasn't just going on it alone. I'm excited for it to happen so I'll look forward to it if it does. x3

Trust us, beni, it's something that we've all really wanted XD

Here's to hoping that the newest version of IPB doesn't take like another 2 years... -__-

I was thinking of suggesting that before.

It's in the option menu. Third icon, 'Special BBCode', click on that and scroll to 'Member'. You'll be able to type in someone's username and the code will be rendered for you in your reply.

Sounds troublesome. At some other forums I use all we gotta do is write @bear and I'll net a notification that someone mentioned me. So much simpler. But I rarely use this function anyway, so it doesn't really bother me.

@Bear

It's also as easy as writing

[member=bear]

I may be able to mimic that @ functionality but I will have to see.

To quote what has been said earlier:

IPS4 will have a "Mention"-feature, and we will upgrade to IPS4 once it has a stable, full release. At the moment there is only a release candidate availible, and we don't want to break the forum, so please be patient until the full version is released.
