Bear 1817 Posted April 14, 2019 The Dead Next Door - Low-budget zombie horror from 1989. It's very cheap-looking and shit, but the gore is terrific and it's loads and loads of fun. I also love how it pays its respect to people like Sam Raimi, Tom Savini, John Carpenter, George A. Romero and Stephen King with some of the characters names. Not an amazing film, but fun for what it is. Double Date - British horror comedy that's surprisingly dark despite being a horror comedy. It's just silly fun, but I really liked it. The Wind - Slow-burning, semi-psychedelic western horror that deals with several dark themes like depression, loneliness and isolation, jealousy and stuff. It's slow, but it's beautifully filmed, lovely edited and acted and huge on atmosphere. Good movie and a great feature film debut for Emma Tammi.
Tokage 5930 Posted April 17, 2019 The Dead Next Door is very entertaining, I think it was one of the very first b-movie type films I ever saw. Wonderful trash. I also recall seeing the cover in video rental stores wayyy back when I was still a kid and being mildly spooked by it Graduation Day - Extremely by the numbers '80s slasher that pretty much peaks with at its incredibly groovy opening theme (seriously though, that song is a JAM). On the other hand, that track by rock band Felony felt like it legit was on loop for 10 minutes or something, was absolutely horrible and I absolutely understand why they apparently didn't charge the director to have their music featured lmao. There's not much to be said about the film itself, it's a totally by the numbers (albeit somewhat slow) slasher where I never felt like I cared about ANY of the characters even a little bit, and the kills were unfortunately rather underwhelming as well. I'd give this one a hard pass, there are much more engaging slashers out there, and even Linnea Quigley getting half-naked ain't enough to save this one. Licio123 181 Posted April 17, 2019 Recently watched Pyewacket (very average, the ending is botched, though it builds a nice scary atmosphere) and Witch in the Window (more of a drama than horror, but throws a nice curveball in the third act that left me speechless. Not a great movie overall, but at least has some new ideas).
Bear 1817 Posted April 19, 2019 Unfriended - Decent, modern found-footage horror. However, this isn't the type of found footage you'd think as it isn't someone walking around filming shit with cameras shaking and stuff. This is seen through people's desktops as everything happens on a screen, via Skype. It's actually surprisingly good, despite getting a bit tiresome towards the end. But it's fun. Unfriended: Dark Web - The sequel feels way, way more like a tribute to the earlier desktop movie The Den, than a sequel to Unfriended. But it's not too different either. It's fun for what it is. Bear 1817 Posted April 20, 2019 Willow Creek - Surprisingly well-crafted, fun and atmospheric found footage horror. It's slow-burning and doesn't bring anything new to the table, but it was well-done and loads of fun. Great chemistry between the leads. The Devil's Doorway - Another found footage horror. This one does things a bit different and creates loads and loads of atmosphere. I actually thought this was very, very good. Really enjoyable!
Tokage 5930 Posted April 21, 2019 Alice Sweet Alice - Absolutely awesome and atmospheric little film, it's basically a giallo for all intents and purpose outside of the fact that it wasn't made in Italy, but everything about it just oozes with the same energy a good giallo tends to have. Very good stuff, stylishly shot too. I don't get some of the other reviews I've read deriding the film for looking cheap or whatever. The killer's outfit is probably one of the best 'slasher' outfits ever too, very simple but effective and creepy nevertheless.

Classic, and sadly overlooked american slasher, but it is indeed a very giallo-esque movie. Unlike other american slasher movies this is just a very European-looking and -feeling film with all the trais of giallo intact. Easily one of the more unique american slashers in that it is very atypical. Brilliant movie!
Lestat 2167 Posted April 21, 2019 Terrifier (2016) — Typical manic killer clown slasher film with some disastrous female leads. Campy and horrible effects but lots of fun, laughed my ass off. Apparantly it has a prequel (All Hallow's Eve) and a prequel-short by the same moniker as the 2016 edition as well. Should check them out soon. 2 suji and Jigsaw9 reacted to this

Bear 1817 Posted April 21, 2019 Yep, brilliant film. Can't believe it hasn't gotten more recognition by now. Highly recommend his other short, The 9th Circle, too. Also very good, albeit way too short at only 11 minutes.
Bear 1817 Posted April 24, 2019 I felt like watching some horror movies with a war setting. Just felt like I had to watch a few, and sadly enough there's not nearly enough horror movies set to war or times around war. Deathwatch - Horror film set to WWI, which is a cool setting. Pretty good on atmosphere and well-directed, but I was really put off by the ending. It's not bad, but it's not as good as it should've been either. But not bad. Trench 11 - This was brilliant with mostly OUTSTANDING special effects and superb, claustrophobic atmosphere. Thought this was fantastic. Highly recommended! R-Point - Took me about 5 minutes to realize I had seen this before and I'm glad I watched it again. This is a Korean slow-burner which is all about atmosphere, and what a fantastic atmosphere it creates. Amazing film!
Bear 1817 Posted April 25, 2019 Happy Death Day 2U - I really liked the first film and I thought this was just as good. I'm not gonna say more than that outside of a spoiler tag. Because you barely have to say anything to spoil hella lot here. Love how they keep much of the same premise, but add some sci-fi to the mix. And the humor was spot on imo. Bear 1817 Posted April 26, 2019 The Legend of Bigfoot - 1975 pseudo-documentary that's a huge fucking train wreck from beginning to end. But I still like it. It's just so weird. It's mostly a poorly shot nature documentary with an annoying voice over throughout, but it's still fascinating. Just how bad it is. Don't know. Liked it. Bear 1817 Posted April 29, 2019 Blood Punch - Cool horror-comedy with some subtle, black humor thrown in. Never HILARIOUS, but always very witty and nice. Pretty clever twist on a familiar subject. The Devil's Rock - War-horror movie from New Zealand set to an Island where shit happens. Far from perfect, but thought it was very good. Just can't get enough of nazi-occultism. Awesome! The Tunnel - Nice suspenseful found-footage horror movie about a bunch of reporters that goes down a tunnel. Thought this was very good. Worth checking if you're into found-footage. Tokage 5930 Posted April 29, 2019 Angel Heart - Took me WAY too long to finally get to this one. This was wonderful and hella atmospheric, although I kinda feel like a name like 'Louis Cyphre' is kinda laying it on a bit TOO thick, but whatever. 1 Jigsaw9 reacted to this
Bear 1817 Posted April 29, 2019 Dear God No! - A modern exploitation movie that is nothing else than just that. An exploitation film. Tits, asses, bushes, blood and violence. It's poorly directed, although it gets better in the second half. I wish the first half was short, and the second longer because it takes an amazing turn at the end. But it's cool for what it is, and if you like cheap, trashy and poorly-made exploitation movies this one's for you. I am however REALLY looking for the sequel. Title you ask? Frankenstein Created Bikers! FRANKENSTEIN CREATED BIKERS!!! Has to be awesome with a title like that.
platy 3018 Posted April 29, 2019 Halloween '78 and '18. The original was very tense and funny at times, although I don't think it was supposed to be back then.'18 is good, but lacks the subtlety (?) from its predecessor. I liked that the showdown was short and sweet. Was it really the end?
Bear 1817 Posted April 30, 2019 Original Halloween is just perfect, and several of the sequels are worth seeing. The second and third ones are both really good, with the third being one of the most underrated sequels in the history of cinema. The complete change fucked that film. Had it been released under another title I'm sure it would've been regarded as a good horror movie today. Newest one was surprisingly good too. Grindsploitation 4: Meltsploitation - It's unlike me to jump onto the fourth movie in a series of movies, but today I did. It's an anthology movie clocking it at no less than two and a half hours of trashy, poorly made horror and exploitation short movies and fake trailers. And from what IMDB are able to tell me, this is actually the 6th out of 11 Grindsploitation movies and spin-offs. Not sure if all are released or not tho. Can't find much info on it. But this was alright tbh. It's trashy, sleazy, bad, awful, disgustingly bad, horrible and disgraceful, but I just can't hate it. It's a lot of fun for what it is. The majority of the films are cheap and bad as fuck, and they look like school projects. But I don't care. Had fun with it. Looking forward to dig deeper into the series. Recommended if you like cheap, bad, trashy and sleazy exploitation movies from the 60's and throughout the 80's.
Bear 1817 Posted May 2, 2019 Dreaming Purple Neon - I was really looking forward to this, but was left really disappointed, despite being somewhat entertained. My main problem is that it is just way, way to long clocking in at almost two hours. They should've cut at least 35-40 minutes and made it into a short film between 50-70 minutes. If you like cheap 70's and 80's TRASH and SLEAZE, then the last half of the movie will be very rewarding. But the first 50 minutes or so just drags and drags and drags, trying to build its characters and story. Which it didn't quite manage to do. But the last half is loads of fun with creative special effects and stuff. But ultimately the poster is a lot better than the movie.
Bear 1817 Posted May 4, 2019 Black Devil Doll - This is, despite premise and title, not a remake of the wild 70's low-budget feature Black Devil Doll From Hell. This is however inspired by it, but a very different movie. This is the type of exploitation movie most will hate, and the majority of those who likes it won't dare to admit it. That's the type of film this is. Tasteless as fuck, sleazy, cheap and fucking wild. 75% bad soft-core porn, 10% comedy and 15% slasher. I think this is fucking hilarious and it's just my type of film. Wild, sleazy and bad. Recommended if you're a weirdo or a sick fuck, but if you're not, just pass. Bear 1817 Posted May 4, 2019 The Keep - Another nazi-horror movie, but this time it's not as nazi as the others. But it has nazis in it, but not the occultism. Anyway, this is an early 80's movie by none other than Michael Mann, which is also the reason I think it was so poorly received. Why does that have anything to say? Well, because two years earlier Michael Mann directed the masterpiece that is Thief, which is probably just as known for its immense soundtrack as everything else. A stylish crime movie that's absolutely brilliant. The Keep has a lot of production problems, he had to cut a lot of the movie and didn't get enough money to make his vision come true. But still, this is a fantastic film that's driven more by its style, than its plot. I think it looks and feels fantastic, and as with Thief it's got a brilliant soundtrack by Tangerine Dream. Amazing!
Tokage 5930 Posted May 6, 2019 Splinter - Relatively modern monster movie/zombie movie (not quite sure how to classify it exactly). The premise behind the monster itself is actually pretty cool and at least somewhat original, although I kinda hoped they'd play around more with some aspects of it, such as the whole 'monster can attach infected body parts to other random body parts' angle. I'm glad they seemingly decided to go for mostly practical effects, that's awesome. The movie's definitely not ten outta ten material, but the acting is fine, and one scene actually somewhat managed to make me cringe irl, which is rare nowadays. Bear 1817 Posted May 6, 2019 Cam - Nice psychological horror movie that's driven by a really damn good performance by Madeline Brewer. Not a masterpiece or anything, for me personally, but objectively it's actually really good. Techno-thriller that should please others a lot more than me.
