After more listens - I take back all I said earlier - the vocals fit well.  And the music is just enthralling and beautiful.  That chaotic twist right before the cuttoff was so cool!

I still haven't given Immortalis enough listens to truly grow on me, but I think I will give it another shot to hype myself for this release.  I want to love it, but I can't say it connected with me in the same way Arche did upon first listen.

Nonetheless - this group has so much talent, and their sound is fresh and very distinct.  I feel this release is going to be solid.

As someone who lived in Okinawa, I have a strong love for this band as they played music at many of the live venues on the island I would normally visit, like the "7th Heaven" club - Mind of the Sun was a great album, but since then, they have gone on a downward spiral.  It is sad really.  Nevertheless, I will always give them another shot as a hometown act.

    Alright, another convert!

I think AvelCain just killed it in 2014. (I mean, obviously I'm a bit obsessed at the moment)

I admire their consistency since Eve joined as their producer/songwriter. They've definitely established a sound that is unique enough that you could pick them out of a line-up. They released like 20 new songs last year, and while none are stand out candidates for my personal list of "top 10 songs ever", I also don't think I outright dislike a single one. That kind of return on investment in VK is very rare.

So I had a small interest in listening to AvelCain after sampling their single Psycho, but nothing that made me jump to explore them more.  So yesterday, on a whim, I listened to the eponymous debut and LOVED it!  I am now wishing I took more time to listen to this band - their sound reminds me of Lycaon in the best of ways, and they have earned a new fan for the sound they were able to capture in their album.

I have really grown to love this band in recent years.  That last promotional single was just "OK" in my opinion.  The downtuned intro riffing with female vocal samples reminded me of an attempt to mimic the GazettE, which can work, but felt like a cheap and less catchy recreation in my mind.  Zero One and the other singles were solid releases by them - so I will check it out.

On the other note - I agree that Chisa is not looking his best in this style - kill that hair (keep the color).

    I cannot really get excited.
I'd prefer even a single release from Sujk..
Just not any more of Juri's Blanche nonsense...

I think in order to release an album, he needs a 'steady' line-up, people he can work with. Of course I don't know what the future will bring, but right now it seems he tries to reach more fans by doing many lives, rather than coming up with a solid release. And their label is self-produced, right? So who knows if Yuuki can afford it already. But I'd be moooore than happy to have a release we can actually buy though. Until then, waiting and cheering.

Kyos appearing on the Limited Edition cover makes me draw parallells to RENTRER EN SOI, where Satsuki always appeard alone on cover artworks. I dont like when bands do that. I mean, they are a band not a solo artist project.

Is this supposed to get me excited or something? Because if so it failed. DELUHI's been gone for so long that their name doesn't hold weight anymore. How desperate do you have to be to re-release a lackluster best of?

Love the regular edition cover in it's simplicity.. (Can't help but think of Videodrome..)
The special edition.. Eh, it's just Yuuki. Not that he isn't stunning but I've always hated the concept of just using bandmen head shots for covers (especially for full albums) feels like a waste to me and takes away from the identity of the album. Thanks to them for giving us some of each though!

I honestly don't really care about the fashion choices that much.  When in high school I thought it was cool, and I used to be able to basically pick a band to listen to based on look since bright colored groups in Cure and Shoxxx usually meant Oshare Kei sound (like An Cafe and Kra; which I hated), and the Dark or Scary looks menat they were heavy.  But now that I am older, I really don't care about the look as much - I have just accepted it and appreciate it for what it is (My American friends will never seem to accept it when I introduce people to it).  As long as the music is cool, I like the band.

But I do lament over the poppier trends that are taking hold.  It seems that many great bands of the mid-2000's that started out dark and heavy gained a following and then went pop - such as Girugamesh, 12012, A9, and many others.

However - I see that now the influence of progressive metal/djent and metalcore is influencing some bands in a heavier direction, but those bands are also typically more Americanized.  Giru and 12012 made a huge turnaround as we all know, and even a formerly pop-focused band like SuG are now making heavier tracks - which is awesome and makes me want to give them a better chance.

Either way - the sound of VK and J-Rock in general is still something that stays interesting compared to the rest of the world output, in my opinion.  And like all other trends - it will evolve with time and what sells.

Here's a pretty obscure but killer band, they have a kinda experimental-metal-mixed-with-grunge vibe (or idk), Kaimokujisho:

Dazzle Vision is fronted by Maiko - I love her growls!

Mary's Blood makes decent hard Rock:

When first getting into J-Music, I had a friend that loved Tomiko Van and Do As Infinity.  I like it - it is soft rock.

I also was into Go!Go!7188 early on as well.  Alternative sound:

One of my other introductory artists to J-Music was Yaida Hitomi, who also makes pop rock.

Olivia was also a half Japanese artist that I liked in early days:

These are not "Girl" bands per-se either, but a lot of my favorite alternative bands have female bassists that add vocal harmonies - such as HaKU, Hello Sleepwalkers, and Ling Toshite Sigure.

There are also the other obvious groups like Scandal, Babymetal, and Waggakki Band - but I tried to mention acts people may have not tried before.  I know there are more, but those are the ones off the top of my head.

I've been speaking to a couple of my comrades, namely  and @fictioninhope, about making this thread to have a place to share bands with and/or of women in the Japanese music scene. Visual kei and beyond.

I've noticed a lot of times over the years I'd be in music communities and a random "girl" band would come up, and when asked what other female j-rock artists they enjoyed, most of the people could only name a couple off hand. Not because they didn't enjoy female musicians, but simply because they weren't exposed to any. I'm hoping this thread can change that and the wonderful members of MH can share their favorites here. And also have discussions about women in the industry and the pros and cons of it.

I'll start off with some recent finds from the last few months. I'm always excited to see new faces, maybe some MH members can shed some light on these bands?

I recently found out this band is major on Victor Ent.? Not too bad, but their costuming made me expect something a little more epic.

    GANGLION
I think this group has been around a while, I know I've seen their name. But this song sounds like they may be worth looking into.

I think bands like Exist Trace, and Danger Gang won't need introduction in this thread. By far, I listen to a lot more non-visual bands so a couple of my recent favorites in that realm would be
New album is coming soon and I'm over the moon. All aboard the hype train. Choo choo!

    HEAD PHONES PRESIDENT
Anza was probably the first female rock vocalist I heard and I've been obsessed ever since. She's amazing.

    And this band is a super recent find for me but I'm getting addicted to their brand of excessive cuteness. I can't fight it. ;;
    SHISHAMO

    Prepare for cavities!

So MH, who are some of the J-rock (or pop or hip-hop, it's all good) women in your life? Tell me all about them.

So much yes to that post!!!!

I've been a Dazzle Vision fan for a while. They played here and people were telling me how great they were at the show. I had never heard of them before so I didn't go (it was a convention and expensive just to see a band I didn't know) but now I wish I did!! Maiko is a beast. <3

Olivia! I used to listen to her a long time ago, then I kinda forgot. Thanks for bringing her back up. Is she still releasing new music?

I also love Hello Sleepwalkers, they had one of my favorite albums last year. Mary's Blood and Ling Tosite Sigure I'm into but I'm still in the process of collecting more music from them before I'd say I'm really familiar with them.

A lot of the others I know they name or heard only a couple of songs. I'll be sure to look into them more now.
