My collection is nothing too thrilling to look at.  It's mostly ancient VK and a few Japanese glam metal bands.  I'll post my magazines, photobooks, and other merch at another time. Everything is still boxed up from when I moved a couple of years ago.

I already posted about me buying the Goatcore CD a while ago, but I got it the other day. The Rockin' F magazine singles I ordered way back in November  randomly showed up today after me thinking they got lost in the mail during Christmas madness.  Other than random demo tapes, live distribution tapes, and best ofs; my Tokyo Yankees and Decameron discography seems to be mostly complete now.  I'm way too lazy and poor to even try to track those demos and live distribution tapes.

Kote kei is usually defined as the stuff that came after the first wave of VK (1985-1994).  The first wave of VK was often labeled as Heavy Metal back in the day, the same label used for bands such as Loudness and Anthem. In fact most rock music that was heavier than pop rock was labeled as metal music in Japan during that period.

The 1985-1994 era is often called the "East vs West" era due to the playful rivalry between Extasy Records and Free-Will Records during the period.  I don't think there's an actual "kei" genre describing this period.  I freaking love this era of VK because the majority of the bands did not sound a like and I have spent a good several years researching random bands of this period.  Extasy was more metal and were Kanto based while Free-Will was more punk and were Kansai based.  (Very basic info.)  Most of the big bands were either signed to one of those two labels.  There are a handful that weren't; they often weren't as big as the Extasy or Free-Will groups, maybe with Strawberry Fields, D'erlanger, Aion, Justy-Nasty, and Aura being the exceptions. I could go on and on about random crap that no one cares about of this era.

Proto-VK bands were often formed before 1985 and have heavy connections to VK or were a huge influence; however, another major thing if a band is a proto-VK band is when was their first album released.  Most proto-VK bands have had albums released before 1988, while bands that are labeled as VK have their albums released in 1988.  Bands such as The Stalin, 44Magnum, and Gastunk are pretty much considered proto-VK.  You could argue Dead End, Flatbacker, Laughin' Nose, and Buck-Tick are proto-VK.  Hell, RC Succession and Loudness can be called proto-VK if you think about it.  Proto-VK is like proto-punk, it is the bands that influenced the bands that started the original visual kei scene.

Even though I love the early VK look, I prefer the more tamed variations of the look over the extreme versions.  I was never really a fan of the Medusa (that's what the hair style was called) that Sceana (Kamaitachi), Tatsuya (Color), hide (X Japan), and various other guys sported back then.

These are from right on top of my head, all of these are old farty VK bands:

Sister's No Future - Dynamite Tommy from time to time played guitar, especially during the early era stuff.  I'm pretty sure Kenzi sang on some songs and played drums, but I can't remember for sure as I try not to listen to SNF if I can.  Color - The band was known for the members switching what instrument they played during some songs.  Decameron - When the band had only four members, Naoki often played guitar. Ladies Room - Hyaku sometimes played guitar live if the song called for it. Tokyo Yankees - This is a post-VK era one, but after Ume died, Yoshinuma (the bassist after Ami left) took over the singing parts. BY-SEX/Zigzo - Before BY-SEX became Zigzo, Ryo did all of the singing while playing guitar.  After they became Zigzo, Tetsu plays guitar as well as sing.

I present you the cover of BY-SEX's Ago EP.  It was drawn and photoshopped by Den himself.  The album covers Den made for test-No. are just as bad, but I this one I can't even laugh at. We all should be happy that Den isn't in charge of making the covers for the new Zigzo releases.

For the upcoming season the only series I see that I will probably watch will be Active Raid, but I'm not even too sure about that.  I'm still waiting for Jinraiger and Macross Delta to be properly announce for which part of next year they're going to be airing.
With the current season, which there's isn't much more time left, I'm watching:
Comet Lucifer Dance with Devils Diabolik Lovers: More, Blood Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Starmyu I'm also currently doing my yearly re-watching of Genesis Climber Mospeada, Blue Comet SPT Layzner, and Rose of Versailles.
I do have Heavy Object, Concrete Revolutio, K: Return of Kings, and the current season of Fafner on my to watch list.  I'll probaby watch them during next season as there is like nothing I want to watch that's going to be starting up.

Since there's is like no series that I'm interested starting up next season, I'm going try to make myself watch every Sunrise TV anime series that Tomino Yoshiyuki directed.  Minus La Seine no Hoshi as I can't find a subbed version of the show.  The only bad thing about this is that I just finished Xabungle, plus I haven't ever finished Dunbine and L-Gaim.  However, it's a good excuse to re-watch Ideon for the 20th time.

Skid Row, L.A. Guns, and Hanoi Rocks are some of my top favorites, too.  Rip and Tear is where I remember getting a crush on Phil and Kelly Nickels.  I'm actually friends with Phil, so when I met him for the first time, I had to tell him that I had a huge crush on him when I was little.  When I went drinking with Phil a couple months back after a show, he had to tease me about my crush on him.

Even though I was born towards the later period of 1980s, I remember these music videos or songs because my dad had tapes of recorded music videos off of MTV and used them to babysit me.  As most of the videos were glam metal bands, it kind of "help" me over come the crazy fashion of late 1990s VK bands.

This song probably one of the earliest exposure I had to anything "J-rock".  I didn't know O'Hashi Takashi (aka Jail O'Hashi of Seikima II) was Japanese and thought he was either Native American or Hawaiian.

This could have been any Cinderella video, but this is the one I clearly remember getting a huge crush on Tom Keifer and Eric Brittingham.  This is hands down where I got my "older man" complex.

My best friend's mom was a groupie for this band back in the day and named my best friend after them.  I often joked with her when we were younger which guy was her biological dad.  She still gets mad when I tease her about it.

When I was younger, if it wasn't KISS's Revenge album getting played all of time by my dad, it was EZO's Fire Fire.  Again, I didn't know they were Japanese and thought they were Native Americans when I was young.  I also had a massive crush on Yamada Masaki and was determined to marry him.  I crushed hard on Masaki until I got into X Japan and was researching related bands and found out how he looks now.  I was super shocked to say the least.

Like I said earlier, KISS' Revenge was played a lot when it was first release as my father was a HUGE KISS fan.  Even so many years of not hearing any songs by them, I can still sing most of the lyrics correctly with no problem.  I got sent home early from school with a note for bringing in inappropriate music after taking the Revenge album to school for "bring your own music" day in my music class.

Right now, I only have four; two being glam metal CDs (original CD pressings of RATT's Out of the Cellar and Skid Row's debut album), Jacks 'n' Joker's major debut CD, and a Dir en Grey CD.  I used have first pressing copies of Color's Gekitotsu!!, BY-SEXUAL's Cool, and Ladies Room's Rhythm Crush 2 still factory sealed until I decided I wanted to see what was in the booklets.

Ikki got a reaction from Chi in Popular/Legendary/Respected Japanese bands that you've NEVER listened to...(and probably should)
    For me it would be:
Laughin' Nose D'erlanger Die in Cries Kuroyume SADS Luna Sea (I'll explain this one in a minute) any VK band that became huge/popular after 2005 (excluding An Cafe, Mejibray, and Lycaon) The "any VK band that became huge/popular after 2005" thing is because I had a Kpop phase for like three years.  After that I had a 77 Punk phase that turned into an 1980's Japanese punk and 1970's Japanese rock phase. Then that turned into a Japanese glam metal and glam rock phase, and which became an early VK phase.  Now I'm slowly trying to get back into the more modern VK stuff.

I never listen to Luna Sea because back in 1999, I became a huge Morning Musume fan because of "Love Machine".  My "oshi" at the time was Ishiguro Aya. I was PO'd when graduated from Momusu because she didn't want to break up with Luna Sea's Shinya.  My little 10 year old brain had decided that Luna Sea was 'the evilest thing ever'.  Now days, it makes me laugh to think how stupid I was as a kid.  However, I never really tried listening to Luna Sea as an adult.
