  1. SINGLE PEOPLE HAVE URGES TOO >:o

No but in all seriousness I was single when I started this topic. I'm still single now. I feel like a completely different person but I'm sure that has something to do with me growing up, maturing, realizing the bad judgement I have in people, and having my hormones finally take a break. Now I don't feel like I need a girlfriend (would still very much want one though) and that there are other things in my life that I can do to take up my time. Now I know what I want to do with myself in ten years and I'm looking at grad schools to see where I can apply so I can keep studying and learn more. I've still got a few friends that aren't quite where I am yet but I know that pretty soon we'll all get there. I'm also perfectly fine knowing that there just isn't anyone right for me at the moment and that I'll just have to wait a little while before I find someone I vibe with. I don't like it but I like the thought even having the pick of the litter around me even less. I embody the idea of "I'd rather live alone than be together with a bad girlfriend". It's so true.

And I type this obviously ego-boosting post to bring up some morale in here. Don't be depressed just because you're single! I know nothing I've said is going to make a bit of difference to anyone that doesn't already believe in this but I know one day (someday) you're going to wake up and you're just going to feel different and then you're going to realize "Holy hell, I am AWESOME" and then you'll fully accept whether or not you're single and begin to start living and I'm going to cut the self-help bullshit now.

tl;dr - CHEER UP FOLKS :domo:

  2. Alright, so I'm going to start off with some of my thoughts for Tristania's Beyond the Veil album. I got into it a few days before I started this topic so I've already got some idea about how I feel towards this album.

First things first, fans of Nightwish and Tarja's voice should fall in love with vocalist Vibeke Stene. She sings in a register even higher than Tarja and she does it without sounding hollow or aggravating. She isn't by any means the prominent vocalist - that would be guitarist and main composer Morten Veland - but when she comes in it's always such a nice thing and just makes the tracks better. Plus, I dig that moaning in Opus Relinque. ;)

I found it really hard to get into this album and when I downloaded it the first few times I tried listening to it I passed over it because I got "bored". I suggest that people actually try to give this album a chance. Tristania decided to forego just a few "great" tracks with an album full of "great" tracks, so it hard to figure out where to start. Everyone who likes this album has different tracks that they think you should start at and I'm no different. I'm partial to Opus Relinque, ...of Ruins and A Red Nightfall and Angina. All three are amazingly good tracks, even when compared against the rest of this album.

So in short I really, really like this album. I can see why people call it one of the best - if not the best - gothic metal album ever. If you're disappointed with the amount of female-fronted "gothic metal" bands that swamp the European metal scene this day, this band is the exception. Hell, I'll even wager that this band IS the progenitor for all of those lame copycats. Throw away the warranted hatred and give this album a try because it's good enough to have me vouch for it.

ALSO: Do not try their newest album Rubicon. The main male vocalist on this record departed after this record to form Sirenia and Vibeke departed after Illumination. I have my own thoughts about Sirenia so I'll save them until someone asks me about it. Tristania no longer sounds like this. You will be disappointed if you try that album. If you want more of this, you could try tracking down their previous album Widow's Weeds. As a whole that album is darker and less varied than this and the production is noticeably lower (hey, it was their first full-length!) but the atmosphere and the songwriting is amazing. Just as good as this album, even better to some people depending on what you're looking for.

I'll get started on Amon Amarth's album a little later.

  3. I'm not even trying to be the type of fan that criticizes a band based on what they look like (don't even call me a fan because I don't like girugaderp anymore) but...it's quite hard to believe even three years ago that they would turn out like this. For some reason I think of brokenCYDE looking at that picture and that's definitely not a good thing :x

I honestly don't know what to think about it - so I'm not going to think anything of it.

  4. Yes, I'm at it again.

And yes, this topic did require an announcement. No one looks at this subforum ; o ; I was going to say subreddit haha

I got a lot more recommendations than I was expecting so I thought to do something with them all. This is what I came up with. It's a minimal time-investment experiment that could end up being adventurous and quite fun if you let it. The basic gist of it is: we're taking all of the recommendations that we got from users in this topic and the goal is to go through two albums a week and just discuss how much we like/dislike the album.

I was going to originally restrict it to just one from each genre but then I figured that I'd be judging which album to listen to based off of having listened to neither, so I scrapped that idea. I also was going to do one a week but then I figured it was going to take us FOREVER to get through, so I increased it to two. I'm going to try and keep the genres as close together as possible.

My motivation for starting this topic is simple: I am bored with music. That means I'm not getting enough exposure to music. Instead of just blindly striking out and hoping to find gold, I figure I'd ask the members of MH to tell me the best albums they can think of to make sure I get a lot of quality goods. Now I don't want to listen to them all by myself, so this is where you guys come in ;D

Of course, I want anyone that wants to participate to actually listen to the album during this time frame at least once but listen as many times as it takes you to form an opinion! You can join in whenever you want and leave whenever you want, but just make sure that whatever week it is we're all on the same album to avoid confusion. There's the list in the spoiler below just in case you aren't sure and I'll be sure to keep up on it.

As for thoughts, feel free to leave them here at any point during the week. A few sentences is all that I'm looking for but if you want to write more, go ahead! I'm going to update the list each Sunday as I wake up (or sometime soon after). I'll have the album marked off in the list so you know where we are and previous albums crossed off so everyone knows what we've already covered.

Sounds fun? Awesome. I'm going to go get started with it now.

  5. It's Internet anonymity that allows people to say those kinds of things. Each person tries to one up the person that comes next by saying something even more horrible until you get to the level where if their mothers found out they'd be waxing their asses until it shone ruby red. I've got no problem with people saying "hey I've liked this band back in the days". I do that with plenty of bands myself. I just don't say awful things about the band now other than that they're disappointing and I don't like their new sound. If it was just left at that I think the last.fm Nightwish shoutbox wouldn't be such a massive circlejerk.

I also think the band knows that their choice wasn't the most popular and therefore they don't invest any thought into what "fans" say. People that say things like that aren't even fans anyway, so if I were around Tuomas I would tell him to not get his feelings too hurt.

  6. There's still Anette hate? I actually love Anette's voice and the truth is that after Oceanborn Tarja was toning down the operatic vocals and going for the more mainstream singing approach anyway, so I have a feeling that Nightwish was going to be headed in their current direction whether or not Tarja was still in the band. Anette's just got more of a focus on strength whilst Tarja was range. Two different styles of singing and two different approaches compositionally to suit that.

It's funny that I side on Anette with this because when it comes to Tristania I desperately want Vibeke back and I do not like Mariangela AT ALL. It's the same with Sirenia and Fabienne Gondamin or Henriette Bordvik. It's not that they're bad singers at all...it's just that neither Ailyn nor Mariangela can hold a candle to Vibeke/Fabienne/Henriette. As long as they're in the bands that once made near-classic albums, they will ALWAYS be compared. It just can't be helped. The same rule applies to Nightwish.

Nightwish was always closest to the poppier side when compared to all of their contemporaries so making the switch to a more commercial vocalist wasn't as big of a stretch for them. It worked successfully for them too but I suppose that has something to do with them doing it first and not having to make as big of a compositional shift. It feels like every other gothic metal band is trying to trod the same path and they're all failing miserably. You can't put out an album like Widow's Weeds, Beyond the Veil, World of Glass or At Sixes and Sevens and expect me to sit back and take something like Rubicon. The contrast is too high. They almost sound like they're playing an entirely different genre.

That and Sirenia changes vocalists every other week and they just get progressively worse. Their new album was GARBAGE.

At that level, I can definitely understand at least partially where a lot of the older fans come in with their preference for Tarja. They don't have to shit on Anette to state their preference for the previous singer though. I don't shit on Mariangela because I don't hate her personally. I just don't listen to Rubicon and I mentally consider Tristania disbanded - the period of them making the type of music I like has long passed so there's no reason to hope they'll come back. Same with Sirenia and whatever other band happens to fall into the same boat as they do.

Too much tangential discussion, so I'll shift it back to Nightwish before I end. For all the hype the older fans give Tarja, she was downright annoying to listen to sometimes. Too much soprano can be a bad thing and it usually sounds like she floats on top of the music and sings over it instead of singing with it. Anette meshes more even if she hits more bad notes. She's had three years to get some vocal training and get comfortable with the band, so I'm expecting much more out of her this time around. I think that's fair to expect of her.

  7. I was also thinking about my plan being ruined because someone would just decide to nuke us Raccoon City style, but then I thought of a few things:

    1) They probably might not nuke us depending on the origin of the disease. If it's some mysterious space ray that re-animates the dead, it'll be a worldwide thing overnight. Nowhere would be safe then.

    2) If it's a disease, it'd be a really bad disease if it turned the host immediately. That means that Patient Zero has enough time to get around and spread the disease before he turns. It could mean that the disease goes global before we even detect it. If it does, then they might not nuke us because then they have 3 other countries to nuke XD

    (Hey, it's a thought...)

    3) If it's a Resident Evil style / 28 Days Later style biological virus, that means it may not spread too quickly and that it also would be curable. I know that took place in Europe so they were able to quarantine off that island from everywhere else and let it die off. I know if it happened in New York they'd just bomb the bridges/tunnels and put a full stop right at the border of the Bronx and sacrifice Long Island to save the other 49.5 states. That'd screw me over hardcore though.

    4) If it's like World War Z, then the disease is incurable and the best course of action IS to bomb us, although the zombies would be slow as hell and therefore firearm/firebrand combat using my guide will probably do us a good chunk of damage as long as no one panics or fucks up .___.

    5) If it's like I am Legend, carpetbombing all of the buildings in a given city will reduce the infected to infrastructure like tunnels and whatnot. That'd still screw me over though but at least I won't die from radiation ^___^

So half the time I've deduced that they just might nuke the shit out of us XD

  8. I put the word out on Facebook but I doubt I'm going to get any good responses there because music and my friends just don't work that way. I'll probably get a more successful response here.

With that said, I'm out on a mission to collect the best/most representative album ever from each genre of music so I can listen to them all. I don't care what country it comes from either, which is why it goes here. This is primarily for me but I also suppose it will work for anyone else that wants to give it a shot, so bring it on!

tl;dr - name an album from each genre of music that fits and put a short description as to why it is.

  9. Nah, don't feel guilty about liking a band that was once moderately decent.

To be honest, none of their albums have ever done it for me. It was their earliest singles that I enjoy out of anything that they release and even then not so much. Their albums just get progressively worse to me. That being said, I think it's a little ridiculous to think they'll go back to a 13's Reborn era sound after their GO era. No band does that. Ever. Except Boris.

  10. I have NO idea. I just remember in that movie those bastards walked across the bed of the channel and emerged on the other side, because apparently they realized they're anaerobic and don't have to breathe to live. That's how they attacked the human colonists.

It's probably not canon but it could happen. I needs to let Arithmetica know ahead of time in case she gets some Jesus zombies to deal with.
