  1. 曖昧中毒 (Aimai Chuudoku): Supposed to be the solo project of Dagashi-Kashi's vocalist Mera. As far as I know, she's released 1 (one) maxi-single under this moniker back in 2010 and nothing else since. Sound-wise it's not really all that different from Dagashi-Kashi, so if you can dig that, you'll dig this as well. The whole single is up on YT, so judge for yourself.
  2. I'd say yes to Ningen-Isu (tho they're most def. not the first to influence the scene by a long shot) & no to KtK being labeled as angura tbh, anyone else want to jump in on that one? 霞鳥幻樂団 (Kasumi Tori Maboroshi): Another seemingly newer band rocking the raccoonface look. I can't quite figure out how long they've been around exactly, but it seems they've been active since AT LEAST 2015. They stand out due to having a female vocalist, a shamisen player, an accordeonist and a banjo player. As such, their sound occasionally kind of blends traditional Japanese w/ traditional western folk. They've released at least two mini-albums (the latest of which should be available through Amazon & HMV) and a couple of singles. I think they've lost at least two members since they initially formed, as some of their older band pics show more members than currently listed on their OHP. I shared a vid of theirs before in the random thoughts thread, so some of you might recognize them already. There's quite many other vids of theirs available on YT as well.
  3. Which band/bandmen deserves the undisputed title of 'biggest fuckboi of VK' / 'biggest madman of the scene'? (PRESENT PROOFS) For me, I'd say it's a tie between Kisaki & those dudes from Avanchick rn
  4. Tokage

they're not even completely wrong though
  5. Tokage

Do these dudes literally have NO budget whatsoever? This is almost halloween costume store-tier...
  6. its disrespectful to talk about the elderly like that... take it back....

ps the original version for 'Ima Dakara' is a fucking J A M

It Follows had bomb-ass aesthetic and an interesting premise, but it was dragged down by the fucking painfully retarded characters. That whole final act was just so fucking dumb Also, some of my recent viewings have been The Terminator, Gremlins, and Gremlins 2. They all deserve all the positive feedback they get. Very enjoyable, top-tier movies from their particular decade. Loads of fun, oozing character, I really enjoyed all three of them.

I still firmly hold to the belief that that one Virgin Blues cover is one of the best things Shinjuku Gewalt ever did, to the point that it, along with Sayonara Tent could well serve as a 'signature song' to illustrate their overall sound/aesthetic. Anyone else with me on this one?

To be frank, i'm surprised they managed to last long enough to release more than just a single full-length album in the first place. A five year run in VK is pretty exceptional in the current scene. They were pretty fucking good in the beginning, and I think I enjoyed just about all their releases to some extent up to that one big Ains va album, but after that I quickly found my interest dwindling. Their formula seemed to get stale, and they never really managed to reinvent themselves or step it up. Still kind of a shame to see them go, but I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing some of their members around again in the near future. Anyone want to place bets on how long it'll be before Yukika sucks Gossip dry?

Yeah actually to be fair you're pretty much good with everything they released, including all the weird side projects & alter-ego bands like their punk alter egos or that 1 band Amano was in together w/ some other dude where they sang about dinosaurs and shit. Most of their albums are pretty short runtime-wise as well, so they're the perfect bite size (altho i wish the albums were longer so we'd have more content lmao)
  12. Tokage

Didn't they already do this once before tho
  13. 殺人コック(Satsujin Cook) I can't find jack shit about this band other than that they exist, they're some kind of punk/angura band & they're apparently themed around cooking. One of the members appears to be connected to the band 新沼GENJI. I guess their OHP must have been http://www.h6.dion.ne.jp/~kokku/index.html but it appears to be dead. Truly iconic
  14. ドクターモルモット (Dr. Marmot) Formed somewhere around 2007, disbanded somewhere around 2011 or 2012. (I'm noticing a pattern here..) For the fans of bleep bloop stuff. I guess their music can somewhat be compared to bands like Metronome, Idenshi Kumikae Kodomokai, Himitsu Kessha Codomo A and such. Not that bad. Released a couple of singles, at least one mini-album and appeared on at least one v/a release.
  15. ムジナ (Mujina) As indicated above, the drummer from The Lachi apparently went on to play in Mujina after the former disbanded in 2011. I think these guys lasted even shorter than The Lachi. They disbanded in 2012 after the departure of their vocalist & drummer. Benizemi covered one of their songs at some point. Two of their releases were ULed here once, I don't know if they're still available. Can't find anything by them on YT, so no samples this time lol
  16. @saltofstonesI'd say Azafuse counts, they used to be labeled as angura back in the '00s along w/ other bands like Uma (who were also pretty good actually) and such. Didn't know they were back! Here's another ''newer'' band that popped up in the last decade. ラチ (The Lachi) These guys formed back in 2007 and disbanded/stopped activities somewhere in 2011. Their drummer went on to join the short-lived angura band Mujina. They released a handful of singles, maxi-singles and at least one album from what I've been able to gather. Their vocalist is also the bassist. Don't think I've ever been able to find their stuff for DL anywhere, but apparently somebody upped a bunch of stuff to YT.

Here's some stuff for starters WHITEFACE ESSENTIALS: Guruguru Eigakan Wadachi (compilation of re-recorded old DT tracks) (2000.12.12) Bonjin Hakusho (2000.03.04) Sakai no akasa no sei nano desu. Inugami Circus-Dan (2003) Kami no Inu (concept album about a religious cult trying to bring dead dadrock musicians back to life in order to fend off some apocalyptic disaster) (2012) Osorezan (first album released after their name-change back in 2012, a move back toward a more 'angura' sound) Strawberry Song Orchestra (2009) Chi no Ranshou (2010) Setsudan no Igaku SEX-ANDROID (2008.01.16) Ochanoma Killer FLOPPY (2004.12.15) s/t album (2006.05.31) Sine Wave Orchestra GalapagosS (2011.04.20) Soy sauce impulse [the rest of their stuff is kind of mediocre, explore only if you really love your beep boops] Shinjuku Gewalt (xxxx.xx.xx) Jitsuroku kayou taizen daiichishuu (xxxx.xx.xx) Kaizou Tape (2012.xx.xx) daisankai Tokyo taikai kaishi kaizokuban Dagashi Kashi lmao i'm not really into them cuz i can't stand the vocals
  18. Does anyone remember that band called VAGERKE? They were like the one non-VK 'conventional' metal band signed to some UC sub-label. I remember seeing them on some UC v/a live dvd yeaaaars ago. Talk about being the label's black sheep lol
  19. Here's something else: 首振りDolls: I saw they were also listed in the lineup of one of those THE ELECT HORROR PICTURE SHOW events. Feels like they must be at leas somewhat related to the Angura scene based solely on the other bands that perform there. They don't really sound very typically Angura though, their sound's more garage rock than anything & their vocalist kinda reminds me of a mix between ex-Malice Mizer vo. Tetsu & the guy from Kalavinka. On the other hand, the album art at the bottom of this post and their visuals kind of fit the aesthetic... A band worth considering, I guess?
  20. It's prob gonna be fun, they seem to be pretty energetic (when they're actually playing songs lmao) Pinokiwo tho....
  21. Hopefully that means FLOPPY's gonna release an album next year or something. Feels like we've been waiting too long for some new material. GalapagosS at least released an album last year, but other than that I know nothing about them.. To be honest, I kind of stopped actively keeping up with them around the time Run Like Fury dropped. Don't know why, but somehow their music after that just never quite did it for me the way Metronome or FLOPPY did despite GalapagosS not even being all that different fundamentally.
  22. Use this thread to share your current faves, recent discoveries, recs, etc.! Basically, linkspam central. I'm gonna start off with a few of my own: P-MODEL Lizard G-Schmitt MADAME EDWARDA Daisuck & Prostitute
  23. I'd argue that at least 浜崎容子 has SOME sort of angura cred tho, if only due to her band Urbangarde and their general themes, aesthetics, etc. I guess those influences are less pronounced in her solo stuff cuz I get the impression that it's mostly Tenma who's responsible for the weirder stuff in Urbangarde The whole 'properly defining angura' thing is really difficult indeed, and tbh i feel like it's more like one of those things foreign fans get caught up in flame wars over than anything the domestic fanbase worries about anyway, but there still do appear to be at least some recurrent underlying themes, influences, aesthetics & recurring connections between certain bands, labels, etc. レインマン actually had some pretty solid tunes too, for what it's worth. ヒトツメ was always rather hit-or-miss for me tbh (still bought one of their minis tho). Elektel-shiki was just pure unfiltered shit lmao
  24. lmao i get the impression that most angura band lives seem to be the bands just fucking around, maybe performing some dumb sketches here and there and then mayyyyyyybe occasionally playing a song or two as well. i think they sometimes do some more interesting stuff tho. IDK which song you listened to, but I'd say you should give SSO another chance. Try checking out their full-length album Chi no Ranshou or their Subete Kiete Nakunare mini. Both should be on Spotify. They do some pretty cool stuff here and their IMO, but I can see why it's not for everybody. Since you're into Merry and Marco, I'm assuming you probably already checked them out or know of them, but have you ever tried out Kyokutou Girl Friend and/or ハッピーサッド (Happysad)? Besides sharing a vocalist, I think they shared some other members as well. Both bands have this sort of retro aesthetic Merry has, tho KGF is a lot punkier (to the point where one of their releases pretty much straight up copied the cover art for the legendary jap punk album Meshi Kuuna! by INU lmao). Both bands are sadly long disbanded, but they were very good. You might also want to check out Monokuro Kinema.
  25. Both of my faves are bands that never really seemed to fit in with the general UC aesthetic all that much... Himitsu Kessha Codomo A: I was (and still am) a total whore for the bleep-bloop sound, so naturally I love these guys. I'd go as far as to say that I like pretty much every single project vo. Eiji has been involved in though, perhaps w/ the exception of Dentaku lmao. The guy's an absolute madman. Just look at some of his lyrics; songs about ghosts, a zombie jpop idol getting shot by the police, a romance between a boy & a girl with a bomb surgically planted inside her puss, jumping in front of trains, weird boys setting the girl they love on fire... Good stuff. Oto-Oni: Their mixture of traditional 'oriental' + tribal sounds is simply something that's never been matched by any VK band since. One of the most unique and underrated bands on the scene for sure. Besides those two, I also always quite liked Dali's older material. Coincidentally, I started to lose interest in them somewhere around the same period as Jig. Phantasmagoria gets a honorable mention just because Fairy Times Memory was among the first ten-or-so VK songs I ever heard.
