I mean it in the way that when artists combine kanji not usually combinable to have deeper meaning at least the base kanji they combined can be read that way In the case of 今日 neither 今 and 日 have ユ or メ readings, so even though 今日 is read as "kyou" and not "yume" it would be cool/work still if the readings of the individual kanjis would be possible to read as "yu" and "me", which it is not the case hence my point.
