[Lyrics] DIMLIM - vanitas [English/Romaji/Kanji]

Recommended Posts

Damn, this song is so good. Someone posted the Japanese lyrics on the music video on YouTube so I went ahead and wrote up the romaji and an English translation.

The original lyrics are quite vague and conceptual as is the case with Japanese but I did my best to lace everything together.

Any feedback/suggestions welcome!

Do you understand that time?

Are you conscious?

I ask unconsciously

My morals

How they wander

Without comprehending these savage emotions

I shut my eyes at my inexperience

Scattering the poison just turns things to shit

Humans are beings somehow confused without knowing why

Unaware of such continued deception and betrayal

Oh, those sinful days

I exist alongside my rusted past

If only I could force open

That foolish door

I would awaken from the dream

And tear from my distant past

My inexperience

I want to flush your goddamn torn up tiny pieces down the toilet

I wonder if a garbage dump like that

Is a hopeless ideal

Each day's faults are a past that cannot be changed

Fall asleep now

In the bottomless abyss

Note 1: The first three lines were the hardest for me to translate. If you're a Japanese speaker then I'd love to hear your interpretation of it. The という無意識 really throws off the whole thing for me because of the という. It's the usual problem of who's the subject of the sentence. The questions are being asked by the main subject in the lyrics (hence the two cases of の). So is he asking himself those things unconsciously? I think I got it right but let me know if you read it otherwise.

Note 2: It's implied that he's the one who tore up the tiny pieces (that he wants to flush down the toilet).

I like that Sho uses harsh vocals for the appropriate lyrics. I mean the “I want to flush your goddamn torn up tiny pieces down the toilet” part is the perfect line for the way he delivers it.

Hi, your translation is wonderful.

I'm Japanese, so I'll point out one romaji mistake and answer Note 1.

[Romaji]

Sukui nikui risou kana

Sukui *gatai* risou kana

[Note 1]

意識はあるの

という無意識

is one sentence, not two sentence.

"意識はあるの" is the phrase someone said, but I'm not sure who said. Probably woman.

"意識はあるの" という 無意識

"の" is colloquial expression used by Women generally and it is no meaning.

You can ignore it in the context like this basically when you translate it into English.

So you can replace the sentence with

"意識はある" という 無意識

I'm not fluent English speaker, so I cannot translate it into clear English.

The following is my translation.

意識はあるのという無意識

The unconciousness of  "I'm councious"

or

Uncounciousness of counciousness

Hi, I'm a Japanese student just stopping by to drop some information that might be useful for the translation.

1) If we stretch a bit the meaning of 無意識 and  意識 they might refer to "the state of consciousness/unconsciousness".  This would make some sense since in the previous sentence it is asked "Do you understand (perhaps "know" might work a bit better) that time?" hinting to a time or a state.

2) In the following stanza, you gave to the sentence an emphasis with that "how" which actually is not present in the Japanese lyrics, in reality it would more like this "my morals/wander without comprehending/ these savage emotions".

3) In the third stanza I think the first two lines are part of the same sentence as there's a 連用形 conjugation between the two, it could sound like these: "Shutting my eyes to my inexperience/ and scattering the poison  just turns (everything) to shit".

4) The expression 毒を撒き散らす sounded a bit strange to me, so I decided to look a bit more into it. It is no idiomatic expression, still it sounds oddly familiar to the expression 毒を吐く (lit. "spitting/vomiting poison) which actually means "to reveal one's hate/to speak ill of someone": the expression used in a song might be a way to reinforce to concept that someone not only spit poison, but also scattered it all around (meaning that not only spoke ill of someone, but poured this hate in everything else).

5) In the fourth stanza you put "I" as the subject, but to me it sounds more like the subject is "those sinful days". Also, the present form in Japanese is more correctly callled "non-past form" as it could refer also to the future---> a possible translation: "Oh, those sinful days/ will exist alongside my rusted past".

6) In the last stanza you forgot "scary" ---> "Each day's faults are a scary past that cannot be changed".

Sorry for the perhaps too many points, you did a great job in the translation, hope my suggestion might help improving your already great work.

Cheers!

Old thread but thought I'd add my two yen. Taking some stylistic liberties but

the kind of unconsciousness where you wonder

if you're aware in the moment

or if you're conscious at all
