Saddest video game moments (probable spoilers herein!)

Recommended Posts

Steven Spielberg says, "I will accept video games as a story-telling medium when someone can honestly say, 'I cried at level 17.'" And it got me thinking about how many times I might have cried during a video game and the scenes that triggered it, so! Has a video game ever moved you emotionally? A particular character, story arc or scene? Let's dispute Spielberg! Feel free to provide clips. :)

SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT!

01. Shadow of the Colossus - Agro

Spoiler

Throughout the game, Agro is Wander's only trusted companion and beloved horse. He helps him through many dangers. As they cross this bridge to reach the last colossus, it begins to collapse behind them. Agro realises there's no way for them to cross it together and sacrifices himself to save his friend.

02. Lost Odyssey - Kaim and Lirum

Spoiler

Kaim is an immortal who thought his daughter was gone forever (missing, dead, I can't remember if it's specified or not but I always assumed dead). He meets two children in the middle of the game and subsequently saves them from attackers, allowing them to gather their sick mother's favourite flowers and lead Kaim and company to their small home for rest.  Kaim discovers their mother is in fact his long lost daughter. Their reunion is short-lived and Lirum dies after she sees her father for the last time.

There are more, but I figured I'd give you guys the opportunity to share yours first.

Not to be funny, but I actually cried when tails was shot out the sky at the start of the "Wing Fortress Zone" on Sonic the Hedgehog 2. DEAD SERIOUS. I was like...5 or 6 years old, though xD

Other than that, I'm not a gamer so...^^

Actually, Phantasy Star 2's storyline was pretty moving....even though it was an old-ass Sega RPG. xD

Agreed about Shadow Of The Colossus, it is still one of the saddest and most uplifting things I've came through during my life. Loving it to death.

Oh this is good. I've definitely had my share of blubbing. And I'll totally agree on those SOTC and Lost Odyssey parts. Amazing.

Let's see. Spoilers abound.

Metal Gear Solid 4

Okay really, I'm not even gonna bother linking that week-long ending. That fucking incredible, emotionally epic masterpiece of an ending. Truly I almost, stress almost, wish MGS ended there. I suppose, sure, Rising is a prequel as far as I know, but still. A lot of what made this ending, and just generally this game, so perfect was that it was, at the time, THE END of Metal Gear. Looking back, I don't think anything plot-wise wasn't tied up, you finally take out Liquid/Ocelot in that epic fistfight with all the callbacks on top of Outer Haven, for a while you think Snake killed himself, the real Big Boss shows up and dies slumped on the gravestone with the cigar dropping from his mouth, Zero gets revealed as the mastermind. And a big part of it, which I hadn't properly picked up on at first, was just the fact that Snake was now an old man due to the rapid aging of the FOXDIE. He could still kick ass, of course, but at times it would keep showing how vulnerable his body and mind were and emphasized quite a lot that he's not that young healthy badass everyone remembers anymore. And while that was brilliant it was really heart wrenching. Storytelling perfection. All that nostalgia of the previous titles throughout the entire game (especially the return to Shadow Moses, my god. I cried like a baby at just about everything that happened during that mission.) just built and built and built and just knowing that that was the end, was both fantastic and horribly saddening. Manly tears were shed throughout.

Final Fantasy VII

Fuck yoooooooooooou. Yeah I said FF7. "The most overrated blahdy blahdy blah". And yes I am talking about the Aeris scene. WAH WAH, go drown in a creek. But I'm pretty sure it's mostly all down to Mr Uematsu for this one. Aeris' Theme when she dies is beautiful in itself, but I just adored how it continued on into the boss fight with Jenova, with every sound effect of your attacks etc with that eerie echo. It was fantastic.

Red Dead Redemption

I actually couldn't find a proper video of the "ending". That being John Marston sacrificing himself for his family. I guess it's fair to call it an ending since the actual credit rolling ending is pretty easy to pass by. But yeah this game was utterly magical. Best thing Rockstar has ever done. Never really cared for any protagonists in a long time quite as much as John and that barn scene was total T_T.

Will think of more later. Tired. :butwry:

Half-Life 2: Episode 2's Ending

uXjw2M5Pl28

While the rocket is being prepared, White Forest comes under attack by a dozen Striders escorted by Hunters. Gordon engages and destroys them using experimental explosive charges created by Magnusson (the Magnusson Device). After the rocket is successfully launched and the portal closed, Eli again warns Gordon about the "cargo" on the Borealis, which he wants destroyed, and the three of them head into a hangar where Alyx has restored an old helicopter. However, they are ambushed by a pair of Advisors, who restrain them. Alyx and Gordon are then forced to watch helplessly as Eli is grabbed by one of the Advisors and brutally killed. As Alyx and Gordon are taken by the second Advisor to meet the same fate, Dog hears Alyx's cries, bursts in through the roof and attacks it, causing both Advisors to flee. The game ends with Alyx mourning over her father's body.

It's like GODDAMN MAN! moments.

I am very close with my Dad so this one really gets me.

hmmz, can't really think of any really sad moments in gaming, though I'm a pretty hardcore gamer. I do remember some stories of Lost Odyssey being heart wrenching. As for example the story where Kaim meets his senile wife about 60 years after meeting her for the first time etc... But yeah, the Lirium moment was also strong...

Shocking moments oke, but really sad moments, I can't think of any...

Most saddening part that got me cried over is Persona 3 ending.

Where the hero(blue haired boy) dies.

Other than that,Persona 4 also has its sad part. Its the real boss battle(not margaret).

-FF7

(where sephiroth killed aeris)

-FF8 ending

-Silent Hill 1 & 3

Just that.

EDIT : FFX made me cried like a baby too.

Well, FF-Stories from 6-10 all had their sad Moments. But there are many other Scenes from other Games, that have this kind of dramatic Scenes that can really move your Heart.

Genso Suikoden II

Tales of the Abyss

Xenosaga, lots of dramatic and sad Scenes:

Special sad Scene (for me) from Xenosaga I

There are way more like Grandia, Koudelka, Shadowhearts, Wild Arms a.s.o. but i could not find any appropriate Videos on Youtube.

Mr.Spielberg doesn`t really know anything about Videogames, i assume.

To state something like this shows clearly: he never even played a Game. Not to talk about RPG`s. I guess HE could learn one or two Things from a good Story told in a Game, the Way it is presented and unfolding. A blend of all good Features from Books and Movies alike.

The ending.

Final Fantasy IX

The only video game to truly make me cry.

The scene where Dagger's mother (the queen) dies.

To The Moon

http://youtu.be/sqkJuSV-23U

This game has "sad" written all over it. But the moments that stood out to me is the flashback scene where the insert music comes in and the ending sequence.

Valkyria Chronicles

When Welkin and Alicia buried a dying enemy soldier then the enemy squad thank them for taking care of him to the very end.

Xenogears

The tragic fate of Fei and Elly in each of their reincarnation.

In recent memory one of the saddest moments I've experienced in a video game has actually been the opening scene of "The Last of Us"

This Scene literally made me tear up, and i think it was genius on naughty dog's part to include something so intense and tear jerking right at the very beginning of the game. To me It made Joel's character stand out from the very beginning and really made you feel for him emotionally right from the get go, also it sets up the premise and harshness of the world and setting excellently.

Fucking this. This soooooo hard. I was playing it with my gf and another friend watching, and you could feel the collective strain of us all trying to fight back the tears. There is something to really be said about having you start off not playing as Joel...god, it is giving me the goosebumps just thinking of it.
