Bear got a reaction from odrep in MH FEATURED POLL #35: How do you feel about autotune in music?
I don't mind autotune at all as long as it's used a bit subtle. Just don't go full retard with it. Agalloch is a band who utilizes autoune to great success live IMO.

Jurassic World - Far better than I had expected, but it just pales compared to the original, and let us be honest here; this is more a remake of the two first films than a sequel. It's basically a modern and updated version of the original. It's enjoyable for what it is. In fact I was very much entertained, but it's not something I'll rewatched very often. And a few things were just too stupid. Not sure what they were thinking. Anyway, I was entertained. A 7/10 type of film I guess. A weak 7, but a 7.

I did like the battle at the ending, though. Felt like a proper kaiju fight. Very surprising, but cool.

The most disappointing thing here is the amount of CGI. I could only spot a few scenes where they used cool, charming animatronic dinosaurs. The rest looked like CGI. Rather good CGI, but CGI nonetheless. It's a shame they didn't follow the original in it's use of practical/animatronic and CGI. It's basically the perfect recipie for how to use CGI.

Long time since I posted anything here, so here's a few of my newest purchases. Four vinyls and one tape:

    Sigh - Graveward (Black vinyl)
Sigh - Graveward (Blue marbled vinyl)
    Dødsengel ‎– Alongside Choronzon
    Dødsengel ‎– Ecstatic Horror
    Guilt - Elm Demotape

I traded two Sabbat 12" against the two Dødsengel releases with my brother, and the Guilt demotape was given to me for free together with a Dir en grey and Polysics tshirts by The Reverend on the forum. Can't complain about nothing, and The Reverend came off as a top notch guy as well. Seems like one to be 100% trusted in trades and such. Hands down!

Watched Night of the Demon last night, pretty cool movie indeed! I was a bit let-down that they showed the demon already after like 8 mins, tho it did look decent. I think the spookiness and ambiguity (science vs superstition) would've been much greater if they didn't show the creature in the beginning, only maybe at the end. Anyway, other than that I was entertained, great atmosphere all around.

Yes, it' very gay and they way they tried to deny it back in the 80's is hilarious. They're not even trying to hide it. It's so out in the open. It's not an awful film, but not a very good film either. Aside from the first I think Dream Warriors, The Dream Master and Wes Craven's New Nightmare are all very good.

I totlly recommend the documentary Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy which goes through everything Nightmare on Elm Street-related. Superb documentary, even though it easily could have been a few hours longer. 4 is actually a bit short and the time just flew by when watching it. Anyway, it's perfection!

Night of the Demon - I remembered this as very good, but this isn't just very good, this is perfect! (Proto-)Folk-horror from 1957 with a very Boris Karloff-esque performance by Dana Andrews and a superb performance by Peggy Cummins. Intelligent, suspenseful, a superb mystery, atmospheric and at times frightening. This late 50's horror film has got it all. Dark, mystic and eerie, and it features a few scenes that'll make you jump out of you chair. And the little special effects present are powerful and done 100% perfect. I think the overall film is pretty grim for 1957 to be honest. Superb! 10/10!

An interesting documentary and especally the part on Wrest is cool, but the part of Russell Menzies is so embarrassing. Had to find a pillow to cover my face when he was being interviewed.

Krieg is really underrated by the way. The discography is a bit uneeven, but at its best (Patrick Bateman) it's just beyond amazing. That's such an amazing release. But in reality Patrick Bateman, Sono lo Scherno, Blue Miasma and The Black House are all fantastic, while both Rise of the Imperial Hordes and Destruction Ritual are good. I also love the varity of his discography. From the raw, chaotic sounds of his earlier releases to the polished and more groovy sound of Blue Miasma and The Black House to the sheer violence and brutality of Patrick Bateman. I wanted to post the The Blackash Snowfall version from Sono lo Scherno, but youtube only have the one from Destruction Ritual, which is a shame because the one from Sono lo Scherno is so much better. Than synth, man!

I'm not sure if you're familiar with Leviathan from before, but a few of the albums are totally recommended for fans of Xasthur, Krieg, Twilight, Lurker of Chalice, Draugar, Blut aus Nord and more. The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide and Tentacles of Whorror are USBM classics. Hypnotic, devilish and mean. I think the vocals sounds amazing on both albums. Unholy, possessed, almost schizophrenic in a way.

I think the band is at its best when Wrest decides to slow things down a bit.

Edit: By the way, Leviathan are one of those bands that seems to grow a lot on people with time. I wasn't a fan to begin with, and most other I know who are into the band wasn't either.

Not only is Hammer of the Witches the best since Damnation and a Day (for sure), but maybe even Cruelty and the Beast, it also has the best artwork since Dusk and Her Embrace. Ever sine Midian I think the bands artwork has been rather poor IMO. Midian, Damnation and a Day and Nymphetamine are OK, but the rest sucks and for the past 10 years they've looked awful. Cheap, boring and efortless. But Hammer of the Witches features a proper good, fitting cover that give me the chills. It's the kind of cover I'd like to have a a big-ass-poster and hang on my wall.

Been playing both The Principle of Evil Made Flesh and Midin a lot lately as I transfered both to my MP3 player not long ago, and Midian I just hadn't heard in many years as I remembered it as poor. Far from their best, but not as poor as I remembered. A rather enjoyable album. The Principle of Evil Made Flesh is a masterpiece. Always been, always will be. Thought I'd try to make a top 5 list. The two first are equal, though. Which one is best of the two depends on my mood.

    1. Dusk... and Her Embrace (10/10)
    2. V Empire or Dark Faerytales in Phallustein (10/10)
    3. The Principle of Evil Made Flesh (9/10)
    4. Cruelty and the Beast (9/10)
    5. Damnation and a Day (8/10)

Watched The Canal, and ohboy, it was really good. The homage to Ringu is very obvious, but it was awesome.

Eerie atmosphere and cool (although slow) development were the best part of it. The scares were those cliche sound effects, but the story more than made up for that shortcoming.

    And that ending...

All in all, an excellent surprise. Yes, there are weak points, but it does so many things right that it really doesn't matter at the end. 8.5/10

Yeah, nothing wrong with that. There's plenty of horror without any blood and gore, so being a horror fan without liking blood and gore is OK. I'm a huge fan of blood and gore myself, though.

What do you think of other folk horror films like Witchfinder General, The Blood on Satan's Claw, The Devil Rides Out, The Witches, To the Devil a Daughter, The City of the Dead, Mark of the Dead, Onibaba, Kuroneko, Kwaidan, A Field in England, or even TV-series like The Owl Service and Children Of The Stones? Seen any of them?

Anyone seen The Borderlands? A found footage folk horror film from 2013. It looks pretty neat.

That's what I thought, even though I thought it was supossed to be really fucking bloody and brutal.
I won't say if The Canal is supernatural or not, because I'd say it would be a pretty big spoiler. Best thing is to just watch it.

Yeah, check out A Field in England. But keep in mind that it's a trip. I've never tripped on anything before, but I imagine tripping on mushrooms or something would be much like watching this film. It'll be too slow and weird for most, but I'm under the impression that people who like slow and weird easily fall for the film.

These two are great recommendations. I didn't think of romantic horror films.

I'll also throw a few more romantic ones to the list, and as with my other post I'll focus on newer horror films:

    Honeymoon
    Låt den rätte komma in
Retun of the Living Dead III
    Shaun of the Dead
    Bram Stoker's Dracula
    The Fly (1986)
    Hellraiser
    A Chinese Ghost Story (I-III)

Some of these, like The Fly and Hellraiser, are bleak, gory and disgusting in a lovely way, but romantic nonetheless.

And films like A Chinese Ghost Story is just comletely different than anything you've ever seen and will see again. Here and here you can read my thoughts on these fantastic films. These films are a mix of horror, wuxia (Chinese martial arts fantasy films) and romantic comedy. Quite unique, and they've got this amazing dream-like fairytale feeling to them that just drags you in. But the unique blend of genres can also be what turns people off big time. Not everyone is into wuxia and often people find it too god damn stupid. But these films are highly recommended, and I'd say A Chinese Ghost Story are among my favourite films and would be included on my top 10 horror films, top 10 martial arts/wuxia films and top 10 comedy films. What a film!

However, if you feel adventurous and don't mind older films you could always try films like Bride of Frankenstein, The Mummy (1932), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), King Kong (1933) and more. But these might be too old for you, and a film like The Mummy, while incredible, is very slow. So yeah, not for everyone.

But there shoul be something for everyone here. Heh.

The Wicker Man - This film isn't just seen as THE folk horror film, it's seen as one of THE horror films ever made, and it's easy to see why. It doesn't offer any gore and very few thrills and chills, but the atmosphere is incredible, the mystery is very intriguing and the plot is fantastic. It's well-directed and superbly acted, and personal favourites like Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland and Ingrid Pitt are all fantastic. And even though it's not a dark film with gore, blood or anything like that, it's a very creepy film, much due to it's mysticism and brilliant characters. It's just unique, and a must-see for any fan of horr, mystery films or thrillers.

Yeah, you just gotta see this. I've seen it something like 10 times, and with each watch it just gets better and better, creepier and creepier. Brilliant film, and the ending are one of the geatest one in the history of films. THAT shot is incredible. Breathtaking! 10/10

The soundtrack is amazing too. The soundtrack throughout the entire film just helps set the atmosphere.

Mutant Girls Squad - Gonzo gore galore! Do I need to say more? Probably not, but I'll say a few words anyway. Dumb, ove the top and totally ridiculous splatter by Noboru Iguchi, Yoshihiro Nishimura and Tak Sakaguchi. Like a lot of the other films in the "new wave of Japanese splatter" genres it's a film that is synonymous with madness. It's also one of those films where I can tolerate awful CGI, even though I would've prefered if there was more pratical special effects, especially considering Yoshihiro Nishimura is a special effects god. But as I said, in these type of cheesy films I can actually lean back and enjoy the awful CGI.

Silly from A to Z, but if you love childish Japanese absurdity there's no reason why you shouldn't check out this film. 7/10

So I just heard two songs off the new album, and what the fuck happened? They finally sound like a melodic death metal band again. Slightly more progressive than their first two album, but this actually sounds good. I hope this mean they finally left the alternative/groove metal shit that they've been doing every since Natural Born Chaos behind and focus on the melodic death metal again. Will check out this new album for sure.

And based on these two songs alone this is easily their best album since A Predator's Portrait. That's exciting! Hope the rest of the tracks is as good.

Finally got around to watching the original Ringu the other day, pretty fun movie. Not sure if I'll give the western remake a try, is it worth watching after you've already seen the original or is it just a 1-on-1 remake/just totally terrible? By the way, to this day I STILL don't know what Japan/Asia's deal is with the whole ''stringy black-haired ghost girl'' archetype, I just don't see what's so spooks about it tbqh.

I went to see The Prodigy the other day and it was amazing. The sound was good, the entire band on fire and everything just clicked this evening. I thought it was a bit short when they ended it, but after checking their setlist yesterday I realised they had actually played 16 songs which is fairly decent. Superb gig!

I wish there was a few more older songs though, but the new, more punky songs off The Day is my Enemy worked really well live. They felt harder, yet more danceable live than on album. Nah, great gig! Happy to finally have seen the band live as well.

I was a bit busy at the start of the month so I have some catching up to do, but I've seen a few films this month:

    October the 1st:
The House at the End of Time - While not really original or anything, this haunted house film does its job very well. The story is good, the acting is great and the overall atmosphere and suspense is good, but my main problem is actually the cinematography which is a bit changing. At times it feels like they've had several cinematographers, but I'd recommend this film. 7/10

But to my disappointment this is not really a horror film, though. It's more a sci-fi-mystery-thriller

    October the 2nd:
Satan's Little Helper - Pretty poor and goofy horror-comedy that is neither funny nor scary or atmospheric in any way. It's just ridiculous. I fucking hated the mom and the relationship between the her and her teenage daughter. They came off more two bi-curious roomates that just wants to fuck eachother. It was so odd. Nah, didn't do it for me. At least not this time around. 4/10

I can see this becoming a cult film with time, though.

    October the 3rd:
Friday the 13th (2009) - A remake that is awful in every way possible, and that seems to have misunderstood what Friday the 13th is all about. Awful jokes, annoying-as-fuck characters, poor camera work and cinematography and weak acting sums this film up fine. And while the original isn't exactly anything Oscar-worthy, this is just dumbed down so much it's sad. What a disaster of an film. 2/10

    October the 4th:
The Relic - A very cool and suspensful horror film from the late 90's. The monster looks cool, the atmosphere is great and it's an overall enjoyable film. For the majority of the film the special effects are a blend of nice, practical ones and decent CGI, but the big disappointment comes towards the end when they go full retard with the CGI. That's what almost breaks the film for me, sadly. But overall I thought it was a very enjoyable film! 7/10

New Furze, and the new song sounds superb. Never expected the band to go in this direction, but I love it!

And Jim Sadist of Nunslaughter suffered a stoke in september, and his dad informed yesterday that he had no chance of recovery. Sad. Such a cool drummer, and from what I've read, a cool guy as well.

And Satyr og Satyricon was diagnosedwith a brain tumor. It's of the "good" kind, but if it continues to grow he'll need a complecated surgery.

Excellent gig at one of my fave venues (A38 Ship) last night!

Opening act was Jessica93, who's a French dude doing a dark-rock one-man-band kinda thing, drum machines, guitar / bass guitar switching and looping back and forth while singing. It was quite fun for the first few songs, then it became kinda boring (the tunes were a bit repetitive with just one drum program and guitar riff/melody per track xD). Interesting nevertheless.

Then came the band I was looking forward to seeing for months now: the mighty Grave Pleasures! It's no secret I'm a huge fan of "Climax", the album of the band's previous incarnation Beastmilk, and their new album is pretty cool too, so I had high expectations. The band itself was amazing, with tight and energy-filled playing, and McNerney is one of the coolest frontmen ever for this type of dark and decadent post-punk vibe. I really appreciated that apparently they played the most songs out of all the gigs on this tour so far (16 in total, performing almost all the tracks of "Dreamcrush" too). What a magical night - it's just too bad that there weren't that many people there. One of the lowest turnouts I've seen at this venue for such a kickass band. Oh well, it was absolute fun, and that's what counts!

    A video someone took:

(you can sometimes see me rockin' out in my new white Grave Pleasures T-shirt to the right XD)
