Gaz reacted to Karma’s Hat in Truly crappy Western "visual kei" inspired music
For fuck sake
You obviously have zero idea what I'm going on about, for whatever reason it may be. What you're saying about "Visual Kei not being restricted to only one type of vocals" - well no fucking shit. I even said that I'm specifically talking about bands that sound like Mejibray, Royz, The Gazette, ScreW etc. and that includes practically all the bands from Europe. Overworld, Desier, Jenlayn, Karmia, Seremedy, Yohio, and others. This is almost the only kind of gaijin-kei that is still around, even moreso if we only count bands that are actually active which would exclude a lot of the South American ones. These bands rip off the formula that their Japanese counterparts have already beaten to the ground, and they're stomping down it even further without actually making it work.
What I originally said was that the fact that they are trying also trying to emulate the type of vocals these bands have, and not to mention the lyrics, is not very wise. The lyrics sound AS_IF_JAPANESE VISUAL KEI_ LYRICS_ WERE_ TRANSLATED_ to make it absolutely clear to you. It may work when Asagi sings about Alice or when Kyo croons about endless zetsubou, but it sure as shit doesn't work when these Western bands try it. It's simply sounds tacky, and if you couple that with a saccharine Mejibray-esque backing music for the chorus, it becomes even worse. So far no band has managed to make these types of vocals work, although with Yohio being the least embarrassing out of all of these. To avoid this hurdle, I simply advised them to look for influence in the west. I do acknowledge that it is possible to make this type of song and dance work, but one has to be an immense talent to do so.
edit: Okay, here's and example.
Lyrics in the description. Those are obviously heavily influenced by Vk, and they would sound awkward even if they wouldn't have that terrible vocalist making everything infinitely worse. The lyrics just are different to those often found in western music like post-punk and such and such that influenced VK back in the day.
Perhaps they shouldn't try to make lyrics akin to translated The GazettE ones, but instead examine lyrics from bands that do speak their language and just maybe do what they did.
Technical proficiency can be only be used as means to an end, and is no way an end itself. I'm not telling this to you as I presume you are aware of it, but I wrote it just to clarify.
Couldn't care less. Nobody should give anyone a break for a lack of experience. Not to mention the forum would crash if I was to list all the bands that were great from day one. How is it possible that 16 years old can do a decent debut releases in every other scene ever except this one.
Which is why I think the problem is in the fundamentals, as in how to play visual-kei without speaking Japanese as a native language and where to take inspiration from for riffs and melodies.
There's your mature

Gaz reacted to relentless in Illegal downloading should stop... or going on...?
Illegally downloading music has no impact on a band. Though the Japanese scene may be somewhat different (with VK being small scale), a band sees their profits at live shows and merchandise sales, not album sales. Though contracts may offer incentives for pushing an extra amount of units, bands are largely held on contract to produce a certain amount of material for X amount of money.
I can understand why people are hesitant to support illegal downloading; but with its impact practically non existent there's no reason not to (other than the legality of the situation). Personally, I save my money for bands that I find to be WORTH dishing the money out for. If I like an album, I will purchase it in the format I see fit (digital, CD, Vinyl); but if I don't like the album...why waste money on something I was never intending on buying in the first place? Just as with any investor, we want to make sure our money is going to the right place.
In the case of Japanese music especially, imported discs can run up to $90. That's over $75 more than what the CD SHOULD be going for. No wonder why people are going to "pirate" the music -- it's not economically feasible to be dropping near $100 on a CD. That's practically ROBBERY.
The worst part, is that it's the RECORD LABELS that are making record profits, not the bands. So why should I support a label when that money is not going to the band?
Case in point: Though not music, the Game of Thrones TV show has FLOURISHED because of piracy, and viewers have more impact on the show than sales of albums to a band.
I can understand why people are passionate to be AGAINST downloading music; but the reasoning is always wrong. People who take this stance have the enchanted belief that artists get ALL of the money for what they sell. That's a joke.

Gaz reacted to Ikna in Illegal downloading should stop... or going on...?
Despite the fact that I download a lot japanese music (other music not as much, because it's easier to get for me, except it's a discontinued release from 20 years ago that has never been re-released) I don't know so much about the laws and legal aspects of it. But I know that the copyright laws are very different. In the US the entertaiment industry tries any possible way to turn people into criminals so they can charge a shit load of money for having downloaded copyrighted material. I find it extremely exaggerated that even the FBI can arrest you and put into jail for downloading.
But then I am living in Austria, where, as far as I know, downloading music per se isn't forbidden, unless you intend to use the files for commercial purposes or you are plagiarizing it (which I too consider as the real act of "stealing music").
If I remember correctly I read a lot of articles about the whole "if people don't buy records, the music scene will die" argument. It's an argument brought up by the media industry since the triumphal march of the cassette, which as we all know made copying and sharing music and videos very easy. I guess anyone who is old enough to remember the time when taping and recording music or radio programs was popular may be familiar with these nice warning signs:
We all know that the music industry is still alive and very well and they survived the taping craze. Of course the internet is kind of a bigger dimension, because files aren't just shared with your best friends and their friends, the file can be accessed by billions of people. Popular music will spread quite fast. But I still don't believe the music industries condition is as worse as they claim to be. From what I can gather of articles in the net record sales declined already in 1999, so long before the whole file sharing thing dramatically exploded (which I think didn't happen until p2p and filesharing services became standard). And since one year the sales seem to rise again and (the interesting thing) partially due to people downloading from online shops like itunes.
I guess it just can't be said objectively how many damage or not downloading makes as the whole issue is a double edged sword: really popular artists like Lady Gaga don't really suffer from declining record sales, because there are still enough people who buy the music or there are enough people willing to pay 100$ or more for a concert ticket. Some may be even following their artist and visit several concerts. If Lady Gaga and her Label gain 20 billion or just 10 billion $ doesn't make such a difference- of course only for us, not so much for the profit lusting music industry.
But then you have to admit that those good earning superstars are an exception. The majority of bands and musicians are not rich and they don't earn that much money. So it makes a huge difference if the can get say 150.000 or only 50.000 $. (Vk groups of course make much less). Those numbers are just imaginary. I am not so familiar with the earnings of musicians, but you get the idea.
The problem however is, that the smaller the band, not only the less will the earn, but the more will they suffer from the money the label takes from them. So in most cases just buying more releases alone won't help. And if it's true what I have read a lot of labels even charge their bands for the stuff and merchandising they sell on tours. That's actually stealing, but what can you do? (or what choices do the bands have)?
So ultimately... downloading can be damaging, but it mustn't, and sometimes it's better to at least buy concert tickets or support the band otherwise than doing nothing. I know that coming from me sounds foolish though XD
Regarding VK music: I agree with what most here said. Visual kei isn't really meant to be marketed for foreign fans. I'd say that this isn't even an "issue" concerning visual kei, basically anything from japan, except maybe video games and electronic devices, never surface outside the island, may be fashion, make up or any music (vk, as well as pop or rock music). I believe Japan doesn't really care for us mostly white weaboos as much as we do for their culture. Also notable is that japanese fans don't even want foreigners to drool over their Vk stuff. If you don't live in Japan and aren't able to go to the live yourself than that's your problem. Even if you ask nicely the japanese fans probably won't share the live distros with you. Of course that's also because they can't speak English so well, but I am sure they just don't give a fuck about us too.
Also I doubt japanese record sales are so heavily influenced by sharing the stuff. Yeah, some japanese people will download them as well, but some of the truly hardcore fans are still buying everything or they are still visiting the lives and buy lots of chekis, photosets and so on. (and Vk bands actually make more profit with those than with records)
Lastly... I have to thank the Vk filesharing community. The first Visual kei records I owned were bought myself, when Vk became "trendy" and cool here in europe and Gan-shin would distribute some artists here. But I didn't really get into the thing until I discovered the old school shit on blogs like Evil en Lucifer. There would have been no way at that time to find it otherwise, let alone buy it. I still don't have enough money to buy me everything i have on my wishlists and most of the stuff is hard to get. So blogs like these were really helpful. And I guess I will continue to share the old stuff I buy- in hope that people can get access of good rips instead of the 128 kps files floating around and because I think people need to check those groups out.
I am not so fond of new vk, but I guess the principle is similar. Many people just want to share so people who don't have the money to order the CDs can still get to hear the band. Japanese CDs are really expensive for us foreigners, especially if shipping options are stupid and you are unlucky and have to pay custom fees.

I know purchasing music doesn't make me more or less of a fan. And for fans that don't/are unable to purchase music are no less or more of a fan either. I apologize for not expanding or articulating my thought process better. I see it has been misunderstood due to my own fault and no one else's.
I used to download illegally. Without it I wouldn't have known about visual kei. Without Internet most of us fans wouldn't know about visual kei and without sharing music or music videos on youtube etc. I wouldn't have discovered the bands I've come to love. I know that... I'm not dumb.
I know that a lot of artists (if not most) make their money from lives as opposed to CD sales; being that I don't live in Japan, the only way I personally feel I can support my favorite bands is purchasing their music. Yes, it sucks that it is expensive and overpriced and that my "contribution" most likely doesn't help boost their profits. I like to have the CDs for the lyrics, having been studying Japanese for a few years and wanting to improve and understand my favorite songs. And I've also just been the type of person that prefers physical copies--the same for me goes for books--and this addiction, one could call it, has developed over the years greatly. Probably unhealthy for my wallet, to be honest.
I appreciate you for pointing out my unwise actions in sharing information on forums (i.e. "I just preordered so-and-so release" etc.) I honestly just get into fangirl mode, because I get excited to listen to new music and so on and want to tell someone. Where I live there are no other fans that I know of. I only interact with fans online. I've realized as much as I may want to fangirl over such things, it is not wise. I don't do it on purpose to cause a ruckus. I am just an idiot. It is my fault for any way I react when I reveal such information and fellow fans would like me to share the music. It is my fault for feeling angry and/or upset towards fellow fans that do not purchase music etc. for whatever reason. Maybe to a certain degree (or a lot) I have subconscious elitism that says, "Well, why don't you buy it instead of begging me to upload it?" And that's something I need to work on.

Gaz reacted to CAT5 in Post your "UNPOPULAR" music opinions!
The irony here is simply astounding. Saying that you don't believe in illegal downloading is silly. You believe in it whether you choose to admit it or not. Without illegal downloading, neither this forum nor the vast majority of the VK/J-rock/Japanese music fanbase would exist overseas. Whether you choose to purchase music or not is your own perogative, but keep the following in mind:
1) Purchasing music doesn't make you any more or less than a fan.
2) If you know beforehand how people are going to react to you talking/gloating about what releases you've bought, why talk about them in the first place? If you're going to get angry at people for requesting releases from you, then you can solve that problem by simply ceasing to talk/post about those releases. That's like waving a steak in front of a lion and acting surprised when it attacks you. Regardless of your intentions, what you're essentially doing is teasing.
3) If you're an overseas fan that purchases Japanese music, there's a damn good chance that your purchase won't do much to "support" whatever band you're buying from. This is ESPECIALLY true if you're purchasing music released through major labels. Hell, most bands make their real money from performing live, not CD sales. I know you want to feel special like you've done some kind of good deed for buying music instead of downloading it illegally, but I'm sorry, you don't get a cookie for spending your hard-earned cash on ridiculously overpriced Japanese CDs. To be honest with you, you'd probably be supporting these bands more by distributing their music digitally.

Gaz reacted to Nyasagi in Post your "UNPOPULAR" music opinions!
I doubt vk bands have much money from the foreign sales. Foreigners are also ignored by many bands (there are CDs or services available only in Japan), while people in Japan can go to the instore when they buy the CD, for example. Foreigners don't get anything else, than the physical CD and bonus items sometimes. It's so easy to complain about people who don't spend money, but these bands totally don't care about any other market, than Japan, so the sales outside of Japan probably don't matter to them. I've seen many bands open to foreign audience and happy people all over the world listen to them, but Japanese are so closed about everything. Sometimes I feel like a worse kind of a fan, because I can't even participate in everything fun.

I think it's kind of cool that he has a last.fm . I'm curious to see what he thinks of the kinds of bands the western vkei scene listens to, and if he's surprised that we like bands that are probably unknown there now.
Anyway, Qualia kind of remind me of DAS:VASSER in terms of visuals, so I'm curious to see how they turn out. The vocalist likes stuff like Laputa and La'Mule, so maybe there will be some influences from them.

LOL things like this are such bullcrap... "Oooh we'll disband if we don't get X amount of ppl at the show"
Well tough luck, if their band sucks and the turnout is so low they have to resort to such tactics (almost like blackmailing) then maybe they should realize that nobody wants to see their crappy tryhard flop band, and they should move on to more productive and fulfilling things. Of course this way they'll get some extra money maybe and an ego-boost to delude them further into continuing until they pull off another one of these stunts.
Sorry for the rant, I usually don't give much mind to things like this but I couldn't keep it inside. xD

Gaz reacted to hyura in Post your "UNPOPULAR" music opinions!
I have another unpopular opinion. Expect rant.
Mainstream music marketed towards pubescent girls isn't any worse than other music you don't like.
There is a whole culture (especially on the internet, but also in other media and in real life) devoted to and putting lots of time and appearently research into hating on anything made for female teenagers and it highly irritates me.
I mean solo artists like Justin Bieber or boygroups like One Direction and even certain visual kei bands. Movies like twilight and many Boys love manga belong into the same category and also get the same treatment!
Things that work because 13 year old girl's romantic and/or sexual fantasies about 'pretty boys', essentially.
There is no other demographic which is nearly as bashed as them. Not even a tiny bit.
As I'm no 13 year old girl I find no appeal in those things either but I don't have the need to judge it's fans at all. Because of my different enviroment I never get in touch with their music taste, except for people bitching about it. I don't get this: if you don't like it, don't spend time on it. Like you do with every other genre that isn't made for you but doesn't threaten you either.
I'm also not interested in things marketed towards 60+ ladys or 4 year old boys and still don't think I should spend my day with hating on it and the people who enjoy it. It's also not a common thing to do. So why do it with teenage girls?
Teenage girls freak out and scream and throw their underwear (?) during some boyband concert where it doesn't bother anyone because only other teenage girls are present? -People declare the girls hysteric and out of their mind and the band horrible.
Grown men freak out and scream and throw beerbottles after some sports event in public where outsiders will be bothered?-
People are like 'boys will be boys' and still take the sport very serious.
I'd even go as far as to say that when some artist has many young girls as fans it kind of devalues his work to many. This is sad!
Young girls aren't all stupid. Actually many are already more mature and educated then their male counterparts.
Maybe it's because of our cultures sick obsession with young girls sexuality and that it's frightening for us to see them directing it at something we don't like...?
Either way. I just don't get this.
