CHERRYBOY FUNCTION sounds nice, I might have to check that album out later. I admit I went into listening to ATATA's EP with moderately high expectations, but I just wasn't feelin' it at all. Oh well, their last album is still pretty cool.
-
I checked out ZOMBIE-CHANG's album not long ago too, and made a note to myself to keep my eyes on her in the future. Pretty cool-sounding weird chill stuff.

Who's talking about Pantera? He's a jackass, as evidenced, plain and simple.

January is drawing to a close, so I thought I'd make this. Picking up the torch this year too, I hope we can make 12 threads for the 12 months of this year (I'll try to be more prescient/proactive this time around). The thread title is pretty self-explanatory, but here are the rules (well, more like guidelines) as said by @Bear last year: This year started out in a pretty good way musically for me, especially considering the latter half of January. Many anticipated releases, good times, some disappointments, but mostly cool vibes all around. Here are three albums that had a bigger impact on me than others: David Bowie - Blackstar / What a strange and monumental work of art! Mr. Bowie's passing makes listening to it all the more strange and surreal. Exciting, thought-provoking and full of adventure, especially considering how far into his career he made this record. He will always be one of the very best! Ty Segall - Emotional Mugger / This dude just can't seem to stop releasing music all over the place, and I sure as hell don't mind. His latest album has everything that makes his style so cozy to listen to: warm fuzzy guitars, trippy vocals and an almost glam-like garage-rock atmosphere. Chthe'ilist - Le Dernier Crépuscule / These guys don't play around: this is probably the most twisted and deliciously morbidly groovin' death metal release I listened to in a long time. It has the technical chops, the appropriate powerful sound and the sick atmosphere to elevate it into perfection. Honorable mentions DEZERT -「最高の食卓」/ Even better than their first album. These guys keep doing their own twisted thing, and it's excellent. Savages - Adore Life / Their debut album was a bit more to my taste, but the mood is still there. More of a 'thinker's album.' Spektr - The Art to Disappear / Pulverizing black metal mixed with industrial wastelands and fever-dream jazz? YES, COUNT ME IN.

I absolutely hate this phenomenon... and, like you said, it's practically everywhere!!! Also, sometimes it isn't even limited to singing, but adding extra guitars, synth and other random instruments. imo when it's about like one lone synth line or some extra flourishes that add atmosphere to a song, it's okay. However, when all the playback stuff plays the actual main melodies and such, or when the guitarist finds the 'easy way out' by only playing the slowww ringing power chords instead of the other 2-3 guitar lines, then it's just pure laziness. I get that the bands want to recreate the studio version as precisely as possible, and that recruiting extra members just to play these few parts would cost more for them, so they resort to crutches like this, but they should only do it in moderation. Back when I started listening to VK I wouldn't have thought I'd praise and look up to a band just because they really play everything live (THAT'S WHAT PLAYING A GIG IS ALL ABOUT, DAMMIT), but wowwww... right now, the only two acts that come to my mind who deliver live without any playback whatsoever are MUNIMUNI and (the disbanded) KYOKUTOU GIRL FRIEND. The former has enough members live to make everything work perfectly, and the latter one could pull off awesome live renditions of their songs, EVEN THOUGH on recordings they had at least 2 different guitar lines in their songs. The sole guitarist just went with the more prominent part live, sometimes even meshing the best parts of both guitars to make it work. Kudos to him. Oh, and both their bassist and guitarist sang backing vocals.

Random find of the day: These guys sound pretty good, gonna keep my eyes on them in the future. Their album is coming out in spring. edit: also, holy shiiiiiet, Spektr's new album is messing with my head, in a good way. Excellent & twisted.

Also, it seems he's literally coming alone, like no backing band or anything whatsoever. I mean if it was someone like Kaya, I might go see a show like that, but Satsuki? Hell nah, lol.

From Facebook:

Somehow I knew it. Nice!
-
LOL, well alrighty then. XD
-
Whoah, way to go! Both names are pretty much legendary in rock/metal circles (even if not always at the forefront).
-
^ It's usually a gig that the band didn't advertise (or deliberately falsely advertised), so the people going to the live aren't aware that said band will perform. I guess stuff like this is only possible if you hold the live at an event with more bands, heh (or go under an alterego band name to surprise ppl, like Buck-Tick did once at their "Bluck-Tlick" secret live xD).
-
^ Yes yes yes, they're awesome! I hope they release more in the future. ;w; Almost saw them live last year, but their gig got cancelled...
-
Nice & low-budget... I like it! xD
-
Nice title, lol.
-
^ What makes you think so? The press release and the song titles seem to point in the opposite direction. xD edit: here's the tracklist from the band's website complete with the references (somehow they were missing from the news article): 1. The Hell Benders (The Bender Family) 2. Make Them Die Slowly (John George Haigh) 3. Dr. Death (Harold Shipman) 4. River Demon (Arthur Shawcross) 5. Confessions of an Embittered Soul (Leonarda Cianciulli) 6. Suicide Journey (Heaven's Gate Cult) 7. Murderfreak Blues (Tommy Lynn Sells)

Cool! Hoping it'll pack a punch.
-
Pretty~
-
^ It's highly unlikely imo. It was still shot with their old guitarist, and it would be weird/hard to edit out all the footage that features him I guess, haha (or at least as I've observed, vk bands tend to be reeeaaaallllyyyy picky and strict about not showing "non-official" / former members in such cases).

Whoah, awesome throwback set!
-
Sounds like Shibilebashir to me....a.k.a. pretty good. Looking forward to it!

I went into listening to the album with no expectations really, so I wasn't disappointed either. The last time I listened to these guys actively was probably around the "Abyss" mini album, of which I have no specific recollection, other than it being pretty cool. That's the thing here too: I enjoyed this album while listening to it, but I don't have much of an urge to re-listen anytime soon. It's well-executed, it sounds good, but I dunno... I guess it has to do with me not being really into the whole 'power metal & related stylings' thing, so a certain amount of time has to pass for me to be able to enjoy this style fully again. In any case, it's a decent album, maybe a bit overly long tho - I was this close to skipping the last two snooze-inducing syrupy tracks. On the other hand, I have to give props for the guys spicing it up a bit here & there with the instrumentation (some folky influences kinda?). As far as Matenrou Opera usually sounds, there's nothing to complain about here: you get what you expect. I might spin it again in the future, depending on my mood. Solid release with a signature sound, but it can get a bit tiring at times.
