CAT5 reacted to Ito in Regarding the MH staff
To say that I am frustrated by this thread is a bit of an understatement.

The attitude of some of the members make me feel like you paid something to get this service and ended up not getting exactly what you want. This this is something that exists and you enjoy purely because the love and money of other people. The negativity is stifling. I kind of get the impression that a lot of people think the "staff" is kind of a faceless corporation, that we are in our positions for the power and the glory or some shit. The people on the staff are here because they love this site and the community. They volunteered their time to try and make this a better place, no matter the amount.

We are in agreement that the staff isn't as active that we all once were in our prime. But neither is the community. Pointing fingers will get us no where fast. Throwing people out and reshuffling is purposeless if it is done to just appease a few people. Lets say that the staff posts a lot more...does that give us the active community that we want? Maybe yes, maybe no. And it will not happen at the flip of a switch, it will be a slow burn. The success of this forum rests on everyone here, and absolutely none of you are obligated to do anything. If the love isn't there, then MH will die.

Will the staff be redoubling our efforts to try and make this community better? For sure. Will we try to mix things up by adding another mod or two from the community? Most likely. But I am not so sure that this is something that can be forced. We will do the best we can to get things flow...there are still people that love this place over 6 years since Jake and I first started it, and while things may be massively different from now then, I plan on continuing to keep this place running for as long as possible. The only thing I ask is that you treat the staff like the hard working people they are. Pretty much everyone on the staff here is an incredible person outside of the forum as well and life can get in the way of this fun little place.

    Side notes:
If we were judging you all on how much you care by the amount you donate to the site to keep it running, we would have closed down already

It costs $60 a month to keep the servers running. Every dollar you give goes DIRECTLY in to paying the server (as you will have noticed when you use paypal and notice who you are paying - dreamhost).

I hate to break it to you, but that is the way the forum has ALWAYS been. a majority of the people that visit will never post and just take the downloads. Hell, I don't even know if this forum's community would even exist if it wasn't for the download section.

I don't think changing the staff will change the state of the forum in itself, but I think it could be a step in the right direction and it's a visible change that will improve the forum's morale.

Speaking of visible changes, perhaps changing or improving the current forum theme and the forum banner would help to refresh MH and revive moral. (Personally, I've always been a fan of rotating banners).

However, we can sit here and talk about cosmetics all day, but visible changes aren't truly substantial changes. I think what this forum needs most of all is a solitary purpose. I feel as if everyone wants mh to change, but every seems to have different ideas (or no ideas at all) on what they want MH to be. If we establish a clear identity and singular goal, then we can proceed from there.

Ask yourselves this, what do you consider MH to be? A VK forum? A J-rock forum? A Japanese music forum? A forum for kpop and VK? What are we exactly?

Personally, I've always viewed MH as a Japanese rock forum. Sure, we've always had an abundance of visual kei fans here. So with that in mind, I've tried to do my part to share, discuss, and promote non-visual bands with the hopes of cultivating appreciation for Japanese rock as a whole and not just one scene in particular. That's what I've been trying to do personally, but to be completely honest, I have no idea if the rest of the staff shares my sentiments.

That's why I ask you all, before you jump and try to change the staff, I urge you all to come up with a goal, a singular purpose that you all can devote yourselves to as part of the staff. If you guys have no goal, then you're not going to get very far. I think that's the problem with the current staff. Everyone means well, but we've kind of lost sight of what our goal(s) should be.

When you guys come up with a purpose, a goal, or some kind of mission, then I will gladly abdicate my position to anyone you deem worthy. But as of now, with no goal in mind, we don't really have much of a standard to judge the current staff by other than their activity level - to which you guys have stated will take much more to be a mod.

So, once again. I'll charge you all with this task. Decide where you want to go with MH. Decide what you'd like MH to be. And from there, develop a criteria that you think the staff should be able to meet. If I don't meet the criteria, I will gladly step down.

I'm all for reconstruction. But before you guys start detaching pieces and putting them back together, have a clear vision of what you want to build first. Let's see a blueprint and then go from there.

At the end of the day, I'll do whatever is best for MH.

We offered to make Trombe a full mod before, which they declined. We ended up giving them mod powers over the News forum though, because in the end it was the easiest way. That's why the name shows up in the staff list. They didn't want to be an "official mod" though, so to speak. (Unless that has changed by now, in which case we are happy to oblige.)

They do have a special rank of "News Broadcast" though.

Well, I for one have no problem with reshuffling the staff team and adding more active people to it. We had several recruitments drives in the past. The main problem: many of those people that we thought would be best suited for the job simply didn't apply. And another recurring problem we had that we recruited mods we thought were good for the job - but after a few weeks they stopped doing stuff, so we had to look for new ones.

Let's face it: being a mod is not a glamorous task at all. It's actually very tedious, with most of the work done behind the scenes. For year after year I have been doing the jrock contests at the end of each year, which was a lot of work for relatively little results. There don't really seem to be that many people that want to do that kind of stuff for a longer time.

It can also be somewhat of a stressful task. You may have to piss off people. Maybe people you actually like. I know I pissed off a lot of people in all the years as staff here, by repremanding or banning them. Including people I used to get along well before.

The fact that you have to go around pissing off people by locking their threads, giving them warning for breaking rules etc. also makes it increasingly difficult to use the site as a normal "user" - people will look at you differently. That is something potential staff members should be aware of - you will get hate for actually enforcing the rules. In my experience many people simply weren't willing to that. They wanted to be part of the community - not punish members from it.

new ling > new 9mm, from what I've heard of both recently. To be honest, I haven't really given 9mm's newer stuff extensive listens but I doubt they've improved enough to be back on their old level, though I still do believe they're listenable albeit a tad more boring than they used to be.

old ling = old 9mm in my eyes, both are equally cool. (though i swear to god ilng need to lay off using the words 'plastic' and 'sadistic' in their songs because it's almost bad enough to turn it into a drinking game)

In terms of quality, I think both bands are neck to neck. Both bands are fairly talented, but I don't think either has quite fulfilled their potential on record yet. I like the fact that tricot plays math-rock (not many females do math lol), but akai koen definitely has an edge up in terms of song-writing and creativity. If tricot would focus on writing more memorable songs and hone their actual song-writing abilities, I think they'd come out on top, but as of now, I'm gonna go with akai koen!

If you were a kid growing up in the 90's and you had anyone even remotely cool in your life to put you on to anime, you should know why. I really do think Toonami was an integral part in forming my love for electronic music. Ignition is my theme song (no, not THAT Ignition) and Walking Stick is still my jam...16 years later. The music isn't that great. The album flew under the radar of many people due to poor advertising on Toonami's part which followed with their replacement with Miguzi. It's the memories that it digs up. When Gundams Are On Earth play, I just remember the CGI animation of The Absolution as TOM walks down to take his seat whilst clips of the show play. I remember small, excited me who rushed through 3 hours worth of homework just to catch my guilty pleasure Sailor Moon at 4. Dragonball Z itself could take up pages upon pages of my autobiography.

It’s autumn. The leaves are turning and there is a crispness running through the air. Falls seems bring out the nostalgic side of me. Maybe it is the chill on my skin, forcing my mind try to draw on the warmth of fond memories. Or perhaps it is just the shortening days, driving me to spend more time inside, and making me appreciate the little gap of time after I leave work and when the sun drops below the horizon. Whatever the reason may be, autumn seems to stir in me the feelings of the past.

This is particularly so when it comes to music. This season seems to latch on to music I love, and to me, they almost become inseparable. And that’s what I want to talk about. What music do you listen to that is tied to certain memories? What are the reasons why? Does it make the music almost more important or memorable than it ever could have been without that memory?

I’ll start…with the obvious; music that is tied with memories in fall.

Abingdon Boys School – Their entire self-titled album

Enter fall of 2007. My girlfriend at the time and I started dating earlier in the year, which happened to be our final year in high school. After summer had come and gone, we both parted ways on to our separate colleges. I had chosen to go to a fairly close school, only 45 minutes away from home…close enough that I could go home if I needed to, but far enough to be removed from my parents and high school life. She opted to follow the path of her older sister; going to a private college around 3 hours away.

After a summer of spending most of my available time with her, I had fallen in loved. This wasn’t like my previous relationship, where I thought I knew what love was. This time I could explain it. Each little thing. How it made me feel. Our endless silly talks that meandered everywhere and nowhere. This love felt so much more real, unlike the stuff that I was taught was love from TV, but something that I truly felt inside of me. So at the end of the summer, I’m sure you can understand the sinking feeling inside of me. She left, I left; both of us dropped off at our respective institutions. My car was left at home and her’s likewise.

Fast forward to October. It had been three months since I had last seen her, though that was not to say there was a lack of communication. All I have to say is thank god for Verizon’s free nights and weekends, otherwise my phone bill would have been through the roof. But that didn’t make up for the lack of physical interaction. I found my solace in music.

As I am sure some of you remember, Abingdon Boys School released their first album that October. I loved it…and my girlfriend did too, which was amazing. We rarely shared tasted in music, so to be able to share something like this was really special. But that isn’t what made the memory with this album.

Skip ahead to late October (maybe early November, its been awhile). I had the chance to go up to my family hunting cabin for the weekend, which was only about an hour away from my girlfriend’s college and deep in the woods. After some convincing, I managed to persuade my parents in to letting me pick her up and allowing her to spend the weekend together with us at the cabin. After waiting for about 4 months and 3 hours of driving in anticipation, I met her in what was maybe the best hug of my life. We drove back to my family’s cabin, and Abingdon Boy School quickly fell in to place as the sound track of our weekend.

The pleasant warmth of the sun in the cool air, the burnt orange and vibrant yellow on the trees, and the powerful vocals and guitar of radiating out of my car’s speakers all seemed to meld so perfectly together. The synergy of it all, combined with the shear bliss of finally seeing the person I had missed so dearly, just burned the entire weekend in to my memory.

To this day, whenever I listen to a track off of ABS’s self-titled, I think of that special fall weekend…the glorious weather, the delightful romance of a young couple, and the pure joy of music. I think about what we had and I how wonderful it had been. I think about how things have changed. I think about her. I think about innocence. And I think about fall.

Ok, now it’s your turn! You really don’t have to be as elaborate as me (or as sappy lol), but I look forward to reading your replies!

Hellooo! My name is Andreas, I'm 22 and I live in a fabulous country called Finland (that's internet sarcasm there). I found this forum while looking for some jrock forums, and this looks like a pretty nice place so I thought I'd give it a shot!

I started listening to Japanese music sometime between 2004 and 2005 through some anime (Nana Kitade, Porno Graffiti... I was into Fullmetal Alchemist), but the band that really pulled me into this stuff was Plastic Tree, which I still consider one of the most important bands in my life (alongside Mucc) even though they haven't gotten as much listening lately as they'd deserve. Some of the stuff I like is Mucc, Plastic Tree, Deadman, the god and deathstars, Diru (Uroboros and Spiro Spero mainly), Munimuni, 9goats black out... X, Buck-Tick, the pillows, Midori, Yura Yura Teikoku, Shiina Ringo, Ogre You Asshole, Laruku etc. etc. the list could go on and on.

Other than Jrock, I like post-rock, atmospheric black metal, sludge, blackened death, shoegaze and blackgaze, folk, anything dark-ish, melancholic and/or atmospheric basically. But I also like some trip-hop, dream pop, chamber pop, electronic, blues, jazz, swing... whatever man. You name it, I probably will be pretty unbiased about it (doesn't mean I will like anything unconditionally, but you know). I play guitar and, as of recently, a bass, my dream is to create music and I'm into all kinds of visual stuff, above all, photography. That's about it?

I hope you don't mind having me around, I'll be looking forward to spending time here!

CAT5 reacted to relentless in 12012 - THE SWAN
The development of 12012 has been controversial to say the least. It's almost like they have become the "new Dir en grey" in terms of the stark contrast between opinions on where this band is going. Some love their heavier sound, others rally against it. So where does this mini album stand? Well...things certainly won't change.
12012's new mini-album, THE SWAN, is a set of varied songs that all carry a similar sound throughout without sounding completely alike (like in their previous 2 releases). On this release, you have varying melodic structures in THE SWAN, to heavy hitting prog metal riffs in DEADLY CIRCUS. It's safe to say, there's a little bit of everything; but is that "little bit of everything" any good? Well...the answer is yes and no.
Where this album excels is the growth that the band has achieved to this point. There's variation. Not every song features pseudo-heavy chugging riffs -- in fact it's less frequent than in their self titled and Deicida of Silence. Here we have something that is more expertly crafted, even if in it's entirety that isn't saying much. You can tell there is a strong effort for this band to push forward into changing their sound and experimenting with what works. In fact, this is the first 12012 release where I was pleased at parts -- and this is the first time I've ever been remotely pleased with 12012. From the main guitar riff in DEADLY CIRCUS, to the evolving structure in 月光 that ends with one of my favorite moments in any 12012 song.
The ideas are great; but not always the execution. There are two examples that I can point to that ultimately ruins this mini-album (and yes, RUINS) as a whole. The first is Wataru's vocals -- both content and execution. It's BAD. It's TERRIBLE. It is practically UNBEARABLE. Take THE SWAN for example: Wataru goes through the song with attempts at English that just comes out lispy and off-key. Not only are the sounds disgusting; but even his lyrical content is beyond boring (singing about looking out of his window, and crying...I mean..honestly?). Where the track excels is in the musicianship; but even that suffers -- and I am specifically referencing the drums and overall production.
These guys are a professional band, and this is the production we're left with? Not only do the drum fills have volumes ABOVE THE RED (what professional engineer would look past that and think it's OK?); but the rhythm guitar is dramatically panned to the left channel causing the volume to drop significantly. So, whenever there's potential for an awesome guitar passage, it's hidden behind the overly loud drums and first guitar. This is what people did with Stereo back in the 1960's...and not what should be happening in 2013 with the mixing equipment and abilities we have now.
The vocals and drums are a mess. It's bad. More often than not Wataru sounds more annoying than SUPER DEEP AND PASSIONATE with his child-like screams and lispy melodies that are ALL forgettable. I get he's trying really hard to be operatic in nature (i.e. Kyo); but it doesn't work with him. It's either too far out of his range, or he's not even using proper breathing techniques to get desired falsettos. It's all admirable in thought; but it's executed HORRIBLY.
This mini-album has awesome IDEAS; but because of the poor production and terrible vocals, it falls flat. Get rid of Wataru, or at least get him some singing lessons.
5/10 (High score for the great ideas presented and the willingness of the band to grow)

Faux-dubstep and synthetic orchestra hits on the intro tracks signals that while this "erotic" era isn't over, it's entering into uncharted waters. More specifically, Lycaon finally skinny-dipped off the deep end. If Lycaon's music were a bar, we've just entered the backroom for preferred customers only.  All I can think to myself is that I like whatever drugs this band started taking.

It's more of the neo-visual dubstep-influenced metal trend, so if you're expecting a follow-up to Royal Order stop here. What's attractive about this release is just how overdone it is. There's so much more going on than a few lazy riffs over cheap synth. Lots of ideas - maybe even too many - are thrown out of the speakers in every direction at once. I would go as far to say that this excursion is so bad it wraps around the end and becomes enjoyable on a level slightly above irony. What's different about Masochist Red Circus is that they've taken the sound I described earlier and stretched it as far as it would go. All the other trendy-kei bands have just been issued a challenge for their pink slips.

On the other side of that coin, this really isn't that good. No track blows me away. Some get a nod, others get a wave, but no track bores me either. It's a very average release dressed up in a style that doesn't often reach average. Masochist Red Circus doesn't scratch that itch that only a really novel visual kei release can scratch. I'll listen once in a while and have a bit of fun, but this doesn't have the chops to stick.

    Thanks for trying though.
