  1. Oh cool. Can you link me to the translation to M-ology? I am curious to know what others make out of Black Flag Symptom but have not been able to find anything in Japanese.

I think instead of posting some half-arsed translations of Gara's book, I can translate some bits that may be overlooked when I come across them. Like this one:

MERRY 47 Prefecture Tour "System M-ology"~ Agitate #3 "Ideology"

Thank you Maebashi Dyver. I am completely spent, can't get any more out of me... what an intense white hot space. Humid enough to make one choke... even just standing was difficult. Well done everyone for managing to stay standing till the end! You gave your all too, how wonderful! It's no lie to say that great bands have great fans. Thank you for a memorable gig. It's been a long time since I've seen moisture dripping from the ceiling. Gunma, no Gummers, you are the best! Tetsu said some passionate things at the end! Also, it's been a while since my mother came to see my gig, she kindly pointed out "Your drooling is disgusting. Is your mouth loose or something?" Mother, I am a perverted rock musician born from Gunma.

(The last hashtag) Er singing Sight Glass in front of my mother is overwhelming (laughs)

We love you you perverted rock musician from Gunma. And thank you to Gara mama! lol

Please!! There was a blog on tumblr that posted translated chapters, but that died after chapter 3 so...:(

    http://garakarte.tumblr.com

Ahh I didn't realise there's an excellent translation out there already (I should've googled harder!). Since it looks like an ongoing project, it won't be right for me to disrupt their work. Instead maybe I can post a summary of what happens in each of the untranslated chapter?

  3. I'm not comfortable with sharing the full details of what Nero said about the police because I couldn't catch every single word. But if you are willing to go along with my understanding, it is that he said something like this to the police officers: "Don't judge people by their looks! I know how this works, I've seen it on TV! Go arrest someone else! " LOL

My Japanese listening is not always that great but I am more than happy to translate Merry related stuff if there's anything anyone might want help with. Just PM me or send me an url.

Continuing my recent Merry binge, I'm currently reading "Gara Karute" ('Gara's Medical Record'). It is unexpectedly... funny! Would anyone care to read some translated excerpts?

  4. Sorry that it's taken me a while to go through the 6 Days DVD but I've finally written up some bits for disc 1 now.

    Hair

    Spoiler

The guys talked a lot about their hair throughout the disc. It seems both Nero and Yuu had “bouzu” (very short or bald) hair cut when they were small but Kenichi’s was long.

During the 6 Days Gara had been cutting his own hair bit by bit everyday and by the last day it was quite short. He says he personally likes his hair longish like on Day 1 but he doesn’t explain why he kept cutting it :P

    Police

    Spoiler

According to Gara, he used to drive the equipment back late at night and there were times when he’d get stopped by the police. And the police would think he’s a drug addict because he’s so thin, so they would question every single piece of equipment in the van. Nero says he had something similar where he was stopped 3 times on the same day. He couldn’t help it and told them not to judge people by their looks and go search someone else lol

    Gendai Stoic Day

    Spoiler

Binibon - The band says they didn’t really know what we were doing and weren’t really thinking. They doubt they can write a song like it again.

Bluesy Night - During the intro, the camera shows Nero with his mouth wide open. Nero: Why did I leave my mouth open like that? Yuu: Too excited? Nero: Shut up ^^

Hi no ataranai basho - Gara recalls that the band stayed overnight somewhere in Chiba together to hammer out this song. He confesses that he didn’t contribute anything, just had fun on the trip. Yuu says he remembers them all spending more time at the beach than writing the song. Apparently even the chorus, the “Woah!” part, took them a long time to complete. Nero recalls along with Yasashisa Kid and Japanese Modernist, the audience didn’t react at all in their first few gigs.

    Modern Garde Day

    Spoiler

This album represents lots of memories for the band. The guys talk a lot about Toujou (ex-editor in chief of Fool’s Mate who passed away in 2009). He was a friend of the band and supported them a lot in their early days. He apparently loved Modern Garde and visited the band on the first day of recording. Nero put towels on his drum kit at the end of the Modern Garde Day as a tribute to Toujou.

Gara took half a year off to write Modern Garde as he really thought about the band, its music and the album. Apparently he and Yuu used to live quite close to each other and he’d cycle over in the middle of the night to write the catchy parts together.

Kuroi Niji – Gara: “It’s easy to get into the mood when you got someone in mind to sing to.”

T.O.P. is not “top” but rather “tales of people” according to Gara.

Soshite tooi yume no mata yume - Yuu had Kaoru of DEG to listen to it after it was recorded. Kaoru told him to cherish the song, which meant the band doesn’t perform it very much.

    nuChemical Rhetoric Day

    Spoiler

Bara to katasumi no blues - The whole band says the nuChemical day had the best atmosphere and how the performance for Bara with the naked light bulb was especially good. Gara then says “Isn’t this thanks to me being the vocalist?” Someone scoffs and someone else went “Well…”

Karappona uta - Tetsu does not appear on much of the footage, so when the camera finally did a close up of him singing the intro, everyone bursts out laughing. I can’t quite explain why it is funny, you will just have to watch it for yourself ^^

I asked 結生 about why they didn't play it as much as other songs from that album and he basically said that it's too long to fit a "normal" concert and they can play 3 or 4 more songs without 激声. Which is true and you can check that by looking at the recent tour setlists.

They do seem to love the song, though. ネロ was a bit surprised when I mentioned that it was my favorite MERRY song. 結生 also said that it takes a lot of time to memorize the whole song, too. With limited rehearsal times, it's probably better saving it to a special occasion, I don't know.

It seems like they have a lot of reasons for not wanting to perform it too often, which is a shame cuz I love that song :/

By the way, I just checked the Gekisei PV again and can't see any female dancers on screen, so either Gara meant some female staff encouraged him to dance or I've misheard

  6. I got the common non-fanclub 2 disc version, which to my surprise, meant 4 hours of all members of Merry sitting through and commenting on it. If anyone have the full 6 disc version, do you know if they literally comment on for over 6 hours? Lol

Here’s some general/ random musings on Disc 2. I haven’t gone through Disc 1’s commentary yet.

    General

    Spoiler

All the members compliment each other on how good/ cool they look on stage, which I thought is really cute.

Nero (and then everyone else) made a lot of weird “OOoooooOOOOOooooH” noises out of admiration when watching a close up of Kenichi’s fantastic guitar solo. Kenichi rarely spoke during the commentary but says he tried to go all out on the guitar solos (at these shows, I think).

Gara cares a lot about how the band comes across visually. It seems he was also very observant as he was the only one to realise that the cameramen changed every day.

Nero says all their stage costumes have not been thrown away and are stored together somewhere, which I guess is how they could change into their old stage costumes for every show.

The famous rabbit head has a crack near the mouth and is apparently falling apart but Gara wants to see how much more use he can get out of it.

I can’t remember which song it was during (I watched this late at night, gomen) where the members comment on Kenichi’s “retro” style is more Showa and how they all have different retro styles.

At the end of each gig when Nero walks off the stage, the others (mostly Tetsu) go “Ohhhhhhhh!” and say nothing else. I couldn’t understand this until the last gig when Tetsu finally said to Nero, “You managed to hold it in.” It seems everybody were surprised that Nero the chatterbox did not say something to the crowd at the end of each gig XD

At the end of M.E.R.R.Y. day gig, the lights have gone down, the band had left the stage but the crowd was chanting “Encore! Encore!” and then there was a tannoy announcement to say the events for the day have finished, please leave the venue, etc. The crowd stopped chanting immediately and starts leaving. Nero comments “Our fans are such good kids” ^^

For the Underworld Day show, Gara kept saying his voice was “a little tired” from having sung 5 previous days. But actually he kept cracking up and was not able to hit the higher notes during the gig. Tetsu sniggered.

Needless to say, the guys got hungry over the hours and had food. A lot got edited out but there were some notable karaage munching noises…

The band made a lot of general comments on which bits of performance they think went well but the comments on the following stood out for me:

    Gekisei

    Spoiler

Nero was very impressed by how good a song it is. “Was this a single?” lol

Gara recalls having to wake up at 4am to go shoot the PV and being told to dance so early in the morning. And he was surprised he managed it, apparently thanks to the female dancers. (edit: I just checked the PV again but didn't see any female dancers...)

The band argues about playing Gekisei live more often. It seems they all love it but find it too tiring to perform 15mins straight. Whilst the camera was showing a very sweaty topless Gara, he says the calorie burn count for singing this is very high at karaoke. And then I don’t remember how the conversation went but it ended up with someone saying they should all go to karaoke next time.

    Komorebi ga boku wo sagashiteiru

    Spoiler

Gara says he originally wanted to call the song “Evergreen” (in English) but thought that seems too “glittery” for Merry and settled on the current title. He also says that he sang this at his little sister’s wedding. The wedding organiser asked him to sing a song and Gara thought this is a suitable one since so many other Merry songs are about break ups. He sang live with a record of Yuu’s performance of the song.

  7. I just watched the 10th Anniversary New Legends of High Color 6 Days dvd with the commentary turned on. The band made some interesting comments at various points, would anyone care to read a little write up on them? If so, where shall I post it? I will try and be brief but it might still be a bit long and I don't have a blog to link to.

  8. Hi @Kira_Uchiha, I just wanted to applaud your tremendously positive attitude in staying focused on what is important to you because not many depressed people do! Whilst it is important to keep moving forward, I hope this does not mean you feel you have to keep improving or 'make something of your life' so to speak, because that's just another kind of pressure.

  9. Thanks for a great thread. I haven't been to gigs in Japan for more than 10 years but I think this may still be relevant for many gaijins going to gigs in Japan where there are crowd surfers: If you are taller than most bangyas (anywhere above 160cm I reckon) don't stand too near to the middle or the front, and take out big ear jewelleries like industrial bars. Being 170cm,I got kicked in the back of head a lot and my ears kept getting grabbed :/

  10. There were tons of random/ funny moments from going to gigs both in Japan and in the UK here. But one of the most memorable for me is from MUCC's UK tour. The tour was organised by Kerrang so most punters were there to see other bands well known in the West, like Bring Me the Horizon, and have never heard of MUCC.

MUCC was very well received in London but at their Norwich gig the band was effectively booed all the way through their set, with shouts of "Go home, Japs!" and "Don't know what you're saying! Speak English!". The entire audience (apart from me) stood still through their set and only occasionally nodded along. The band was visibly affected. At the end of their set, Tatsuro smiled and waved in a resigned way and the band just walked off stage.

I left soon after and bumped into Yukke by the main exit. He was carrying their equipment out of the venue. I was very shocked at the fact no roadies or any other staff were around. I was so upset with the situation that instead of thanking him for coming all the way to the UK, I got emotional and felt compelled to apologise for the behaviour of my fellow countrymen and kept bowing. Yukke was totally cool though and just kept saying "It's nothing."

The professionalism the guys displayed that night will always stay with me.

  11. It's the kind of band I think I will still listen to when I'm 50+ and fat, riding a nice convertible. XD They are just so... ROCK.

Hahaha that's what I think as well when I listen to them. I can't get into them now but maybe in another few decades... lol
