  1. generic. Cohesive but generic. Beautiful Defomity still had CODA, UNDO and LAST HEAVEN. DOGMA is pretty much nonsense, making a big package out of it with all the promo videos about hairstylists, graphic designers and wtf not. DIM was the last record which would have deserved this kind of marketing monster, but then again, it didn't need it since it was good. This record needs all promotion tricks that are possible since its bland, uninnovative, pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-avantgarde.

I complain! The riffs are dull, the usage of female voices is like THE ONE idea they had back then 2006. This is almost 10 years ago. And don't call using those dubstep intros as new ideas. I'm so bored by this band which is super sad. Listening to Cassis and Last bouquet later when I'm finished hating them for now.

  2. I found 11 way more better than 12. The final three songs of 11 made the whole record simply perfect. And then you have brilliant song like shabaranda, Aiai, the perfect opener Haite Sutero, Cook A Doodle, EROTICA... plus, the production of 11 is really brilliant. 12 is too noisy for me, and the quality of the compositions itself are not as good. Not a bad album though. My fav is defenitely Tonigh Tonighyayaya.

  3. the title track is their first song which comes anything close to the brilliance of their Slivers.exe EP.

It's so underwhelming while at the same time being very intense. I love his voice in the chorus, especially his terribly screwed up singing at 3:56. They could have take another dub, or autocorrecting it, but they left it as it is and this is brilliant.

  4. I liked blur, entering nirvana and siva, fade and track 4 a little. rest is so poor. But when I go back and listen to [anima] everything on here is poor. this time they didn't even manage to pull out a decent ballad. I'm getting sick. have to stop listening to this. Nightmare, please stop. Come back when you feel like making m u s i c again

  5. DEG's albums since TMOAB simply weren't fun to listen to, [...] being like "here, take a huge load of useless, lifeless and pretentious progressive and growly music and like it or not".

    this!

  6. This. I think Immortalis is a pretty solid album. Just solid. It has some key tracks that I love but nothing really "omg" worthy. Honestly, the first half of the album is nice but the second half, is meh besides In all weathers and kugui (鵠) To say that one album" surpasses everything DIR EN GREY has done", Imo is a stretch. A really bad one at that.

I wanted to say that I find IMMORTALIS is better as a whole than any Dir en grey Album as a whole. IMMOARTALIS is progressive, it is catchy, it owns some superior songwriting, it has an amazing atmosphere, it is diversified, kyo's vocals and all the instruments stay really out, it is accessible (!), and when degs hard tracks turn into moshfests quite too often, sukekiyo's hard songs still have something outstanding and crazy going on (斑人間, vandal). Of course it doesnt surpass EVERYTHING deg ever did. One can create some really superior (imaginary album) tracklists with Degs material.

anyway, ARCHE is a good album. I'm glad Deg turns to more accessible tunes with this record. Kyo is such a talented singer that he simply has to sing more. Maybe thats why I prefer sukekiyo.

  7. they went downhill since they signed with PSC. thats the truth. I remember their first album Abnormal Head Machine, I remember their felony single...I remember they were brilliant, dark and serious. all gone.

  8. Took out the bla songs, rearranged and recieved this:

    o1 Phoenix

    o2 Devil

    o3 Oblivion

    o4 Envy

    o5 Bullet

    o6 Greed

    o7 Mad

    o8 Ring

    o9 Tomorrow

    1. Flows perfectly (especially Phoenix --> Devil! check this out, it's brilliant!)

    2. Phoenix as starter and Tomorrow as an ending gives this album a very positive image, allthough being quite hard and melancholic soundwise.

    3. With 9 tracks clocking in at 34 minutes the album now has a nice length.

    4. Phoenix, Oblivion and Envy at the beginning makes a really strong first section, leaving me wanting to listen to the whole thing.

    5. I absolutely love Ring. The bass is super brilliant in this song. Really perfect. 10/5.

    6. Without editing and rearranging this album is a mess, showing that lynch didn't put much thinking into tracklisting and overall flow.

    7. That's quite a pity.

    8. I like the album this way very much.

    8/10 in this personalized form.

  9. you may be right. but singles are like junk food. An album is, just like a novel for an writer, what a musician should aim for. I just want them to take more time for each album, but it hink that will never happen cause music industry in japan is indeed "industry". if i remember correctly, from libido to anima only 1 year and three months past and anima is one of the best vk records ever released. so they are indeed capable of doing awesome stuff in no time. And because of that one album i will never lose faith in nightmare. I think they have an artistic vision and someday the need for releasing their "opus magnum" will come.

of course, it also could be the case that the members themselves LOVE their new stuff and think this is the best they've ever released. We will see :)

  10. Hey, I did this: combined SCUMS and TBONTB songs together and created this little thing. It's still far away from being an overwhelming album, but it's definitely enjoyable.

    01 Deus ex machina

02 TO BE OR NOT TO BE

    03 Killed In Summer

    04 mimic

05 Ame to Yoru ni Ochite

    06 Lullabye

    07 Isolation

    08 TRUTH

    09 TERMINAL

    10 Melt into blue sky.

    11 KENKA DRIVE

I especially love Deus ex machina as a strong opening track, Lullaby after Ame and Melt into the blue sky as kind of "Last track".

Gives me 48 good minutes :)

  11. first of all, you have to give me kudos for the original typography of the album, please

but, in all honesty, i dont even know why I made the effort.

is it only me finding nightmare's records getting weaker and weaker every year?

this one's got even less to offer than the mostly terrible SCUMS. every song sounds so forced, rushed.

Gallows is a weak opener, TO BE OR NOT TO BE doesn't even have a chorus (but the song is actually "okay"), so it's to song 3 to get the album really started. But, that's Dizzy. Cool riff with one of the most terrible Nightmare Choruses ever. Weakest Opening trio out of all their records.

even after multiple hearings 東京都羅刹区 remains undefinable mess to me. and again, that chorus! They didn't pull out a really awesome chorus since Deus ex machina, and the chorus of that song was actually just a variation of the song's strophe.

Rewrite has a similar problem. Starts really promising, I had high hopes for anima-quality, but that chorus...are we in kindergarden? Good variation with the string section at the end. this could have been so good.

Thank you Melt into the blue sky.  Finally a good song. allthough it's somehow boring, and nowhere near all that great old ballads of theirs, it's the most listenable song of the whole album. I really love the acoustic outro, wasn't expecting that.

TRUTH has a great chorus, YOMI's falsett part is brilliant. still, the song doesn't sound very sophisticated. With thirtysomething I think I wouldnt want to make this kind of music.

Lullawhatever that title is so ridiculous. boring ballad. the key changes in the middle part are done very poorly.

    TERMINAL kindergarden.

Drastica: Good beat, whatever verses, terrible break downs/bridges, uninspiring choruses. could have been so much more.

    next song screams NOOOOOIIIIISSSSEEEEE 0/5

L.L.B: I enjoyed YOMI's singing "Love so sweet, Love zo sweet". haha, whatever. TERRIBLE.

KENKA DRIVE: awesome, really good. 2:11 - 2:21 is extra brillant. allthough the part which starts at 1.36 and is repeated at the end is a bit too noisy and bothersome.

    4.5/5 WHOHOO.

2 good tracks but no classical stuff on this one. what happened? I feel like crying, really.

    what do you think?

  12. Ok, after listening through this album alot (20 times minimum) I have to say it gets worse.

I wanted this to grow on me (my first review not being that flattering) since I really like Gazette

Besides my respect for Inside Beasts drumroll/beat and the transition from Malformed box, nothing remains. I dont like this mess.

Until It Burns Out completely lost it's initial seduction potential with its good melancholic parts. This tune's chorus, along with Loss' chorus, sounds so childish to me now. Ruki's voice doesnt seem mature at all.

Devouring One Another is the only song that gets gradually better for me. Still not a favourite, but I like the different approach they took with this one. Definitely interesting.

Fadeless remains ok. Cool rocknroll tune but the female vocals kinda destroys this one.

Redo and Last Heaven. I am so sad about realizing that those two songs dont have longevity at all. I'm kinda bored by them now since they are really simple in their overall structure.

Loss: the only good thing about this song is the use of female vocals and that great short guitar thing introducing the 2nd verse.

The Stupid Tiny Insect. I imagine this song's lyrics are about Ruki lying in a hotel room wanting to get some sleep but some stupid tiny insects don't let him since they are all flying around his head going all "guru guru guru guru guru guru guru mawaru" and then when the chorus sets in ruki is full of rage and is going mad in his room killing all those stupid tiny insects with a rolled up newspaper in his hand.

Accompanied with this little funny situation in my head, this song wins. Which doesn't change anything on the fact that this song is completely bad and not worth being put on an album (which goes for 70 % of all the songs here).

Does anybody know the lyrics of this song? this is of huge interest to me.

In Blossom: Still good besides this useless first minute.

Karasu: I like the Verses with Ruki's screams and the females kind of responding to that. Still, so bad this song.

    Kuroku: hahaha, SOOOO BAD.

To Dazzling Darkness. Good, but chorus could have been so much better.

CODA: as sad as it is, this is the only 5/5 on this album.

Final impression: Worst Album by gazette. I liked Division alot more (it had some great tracks with Ibitsu, Kage no Sanagi, Yoin, Kagefumi!) though Division is not good at all too.

I mean, you just cannot create an album which is build around one amazing and 3-4 good tracks and the rest falls flat. this simply doesnt work.

I'm really disappointed but I know they can do so much better so tonight i'm drinking to gazette's bright future. Cheers!

  13. i just rediscovered this on my ipod.....it didnt give me much back then nor does it now. FFOREVER LOVE was his best album and thats the standard i have for kiyoharu records. UNDER THE SUN has brought up 2 really good singles (ryuusei and namida ga afureru), but the album lacks diversity. every song is 4/4, nearly every song is using his popular key change formula (key change from verse to bridge and back from bridge to chorus). i like MESSIAH and the title song very much. Veronica is cool too but, again, that formula! ALICE is very atmospheric indeed. too many mediocre songs though!

  14. The problem is, you're not even 1% sure that the GazettE did anything like that because you don't know. You don't know if it was intentional or not, and I don't either. So that's why I'm not going to just start making stuff up and guessing.

All we know is that it's somewhat similar. That similarity becomes less remarkable when you realize the timing is the same in both songs (4/4), and both parts rely on quarter notes for the vocal delivery; but something like that, is so ridiculously common, you can't fault the GazettE for doing it twice.

I listen to gazette since 8 years, I know every song of them. NEVER did something happen like that, where I listened to this once and IMMEDIATELY KNEW I heard this in a WAY TO SIMILAR style before. i repeat myself, it never happened before in any of gazettes discography. It happens sometimes between two songs from different artists, and then of course i can't tell if anyone has stolen from anybody, since I just can't know if this artist has listened to that other artist's song before.

so please just let it be and accept that this is some brutal copying.

    it is.

  15. You do realise that you having a good memory of all of your work, does not necessarily mean that the same goes for every other artist. Especially a band that has made an incredible lot of songs.

    are you serious here?

they spend like 100 hours per song minimum composing and producing it. They play them live alot of times. They know their songs by heart.

assuming gazette didn't know they are copying is an insult to their intelligence.

  16.

I think he wasn't talking about the "mou modorenai" bit, but the bit just before that ("all has been erased, a chain reaction"). That part is almost identical to INSIDE BEAST's chorus.

    yep, thats what I meant.

OF COURSE it is not a "direct 1:1" rip off, which would mean its the EXACT SAME thing. The key is different, and of course there are differences in the instrumentals.

but I am a musician myself, and as a musician you know your own stuff SO WELL, because you spend a lot of time with one song.

and I am 10000000% sure, that gazette's guys knew they are taking this melody line from SUICIDE CIRCUS, and the guitar trick from yoin and just changing a bit here and there in the hope no body would recognize this.

and thats the point where I lose some respect towards musicians.

  17. GazettE is worth the hype.

they are able to write amazing songs, they got plenty of proof in their discography.
what they (or their record company) need to recognize is that it takes time to write 10-12 stellar tracks. please take that time and start releasing magnificent records!
cause BEAUTIFUL DEFORMITY is not at all magnificent.

What makes a song good in the long run?
    What makes it a classic?

good, at best innovative, ideas or simply amazing melody lines.
This is exactly what's missing here in most of the songs. Instead we have

    WEAK CHORUSES + BORING RIFFS

they try to cover it all up with stellar production techniques. but once the hype is gone there’s only little substance left. (INSIDE BEAST, DEVOURING ONE ANOTHER, THIS STUPID TINY CHANSON, KARASU, KUROKU)

    There are exceptions.
    -COLA is extraordinary.
-REDO and LAST HEAVEN are 2 well crafted ballads with very good guitar work. LAST HEAVEN’s solo is some brilliant fuck.
    -Kai’s drumming is mostly outstanding
-Transitions between song 1&2 and song 13&14 are done perfectly.

-Providing us with at least a glimpse of GazettE’s brilliancy: IN BLOSSOM, TO DAZZLING DARKNESS. Giving more time, those could have been real gems.
-Kudos to INSIDE BEAST’s drumming/overall beat. this shit is rolling in like a monster.

at last some words to those moments, where this record hits rock bottom. those moments tear this records’ overall rating down to the ground.
-INSIDE BEAST’s chorus is a direct 1:1 rip-off of THE SUICIDE CIRCUS’ prechorus. this is embarrassing.
-the lack of ANY Melody in DEVOURING ONE ANOTHER
-Worst use of female vox: FADELESS, KARASU
-LAST HEAVEN’s terribly uninspiring break down (2:29-2:50). There are thousands of better possibilities to get a little mood change into a song and widen its dynamics. Seriously, this song goes from 10/10 to 0/10 and back.
-LOSS’ direct copy of Yoin’s prechorus (0:48-1:02 in LOSS, 1:20-1:28 in Yoin)

  19. Nightmare has been my favorite band for a loooong time. SCUMS had a few decent songs on it, but I don't find myself going back and listening to it often.

I'm really disappointed with this release, but it wasn't just this release, it was a few before that.

I mean I pre-ordered scums, and deus ex machina, praying it'll sound decent... nope. They used to be such a strong band and I feel like they're pretty much giving in to the recent trends.

Dizzy is nothing special, I listened to it once or twice. So while the die-hard fans sit and tell themselves it's an amazing release, I'm just going to walk backwards slowly away from that whole situation.

They lost me with this release.

Also wow their videos lately. LOL.

    4/10

    this.

  20. I lost a huge amount of my faith in this band with SCUMS, had hopes as i listened to the first 20 seconds of dizzy but got my "dumbass we fooled you" ticket right away with one of the most uninspiring generic nightmare choruses EVER MADE!

i am repeating myself with every nightmare review i write, but can somebody please tell me what happend from libido to anima (co writers? Bad ass recording studio?) and from anima to all the rest (the world ruler still being okay.)

How can a band step up in so many ways to almost perfection with just one album (anima) and drop that all step by step with every release?

Really, it's so sad. They were so damn good and musically so advanced and sophisticated on anima.

Instead they turned to chubby bland kindergarden rock. I mean these guys get older too, arent they interested in getting a more serious LUNA SEA like image again?

    1/10.

  21. I'm just totally devastated about the horrible production/mixing. It sounds like a huve bunch lf mud. Lynh, have you ever heard ablut a thing called dynamics? Depth?

I loved inferiority complex minus anima, and somehow this is the same stuff but oh lord that production kills me. Unlistenable!

  22. this album provides little to love.

Teardrop is a really beautiful ballad, though they could have cut some "noise" and mix it more calmly, then it would have been perfect for me.

enduring memories is so pop and retro, with the 80ies bell-like sounds in the main riff. i like it.

now, we got XANADU, which is just a variation of BRAINSTORM, both songs even use the same key. try to replace XANADUs chorus with BRAINSTORMS'. works well in both ways hahaha. poppy and not bad but really just a self copy.

The intro track is interesting, but they could have make it much more dark and threatening, the compositions screams for it.

all the other tracks are totally forgettable. I dont know what people like about red thread. the riff is ok, but the chorus totally plain boring.

death candle has a nice piano, thats it. DEVASTATED LAND could have been so much more.

by the way i love byou's voice, it is so calm and discreet, always a pleasure to listen since vk usually is so noisy and loud.

he doesnt have any good technique and his range is minimal, but the colour of his voice is unique and so calming.

i always enjoy coming back to their songs, they have some good songs in every release, that makes them worth checking out.

    3/10
