    1) Native Finnish, Russian (bilingual, "accentless") and Fluent in English (ofc)

    2) Used to be quite good in Swedish (seeing as most (*cough* 90%) of my childhood friends were "Fenno-swedish") until I moved to the capital side and my skills have degraded massively to the point of being "satisfactory" (guess it was the result of culture shock after witnessing the youth negating the said language in here...because of its compulsory status? idk) - I do still understand talks and such to the same extent as I used to back in the day but don't even challenge me to say anything witty in Swedish, pls v_v

    3) German could be pretty good-ish if I did a bit of rehearsing as well, and French in my case could be "good" if the former happened...

    4) I understand Ukrainian and Polish (since most of my slavic grande familia were born and still living in Poland) to the most...perhaps great-er extent. Blame my relatives who understand my russki talk but refuse to respond in the same language, heh.

    5) Currently studying a bit of Korean and trying to get my lazy ass to study Mandarin too...due to certain careerist ambitions

    6) I tried a bit of Japanese but then I realized that I'd only decrease my interest in weeaboo culture as a result - I just happen to like things that I understand only a "little bit" (e.g. me understanding German after a few years @ school made me literally stop stanning Rammstein and Oomph, I wonder why )

Cool thread, and I definitely have to agree with Radwimps and Dir en grey(especially Red Em).

    Here's my picks.

eight - illational of the people
Eight had some killer riffs, and they picked one of the best to open the album with. It gets even better when the slap bass enters. Apart from the intro riff, this song is one big combination of awesome riffs, and they work so well.

    girugamesh - Gokusou
Girugamesh's riffage isn't spectacular, but they still have some cool stuff going on. Back in 2005/2006 I was in love with the opening riff of this song, and it's still good.

MaveRick (Eat You Alive) - Want to be connected
The only album this band released under the name MaveRick had some really cool riffs, and I just love the harsh guitar tone. This first proper riff on the album is just so damn powerful.

    Byee the Round - Rockstar
I just melt when I hear that opening lead riff. God, so good.

I'm only a casual dir en grey fan, but this is still my favorite track from them! Great choice, I absolutely adore that opening riff.

Another one of my fav. dir en grey songs. I love how "big" the riffs are in this one.
As for some of my personal favorites, here are 2 that came to mind. Neither are particularly creative or musically jaw-dropping, but they've struck a chord with me and have stick with me throughout the years.
凛として時雨 - replica (the riff starts at 1:23 and plays throughout most of the song from there. you can hear it particularly clearly at 1:45, though it's rhythm is slightly different at that point).
It would be easier to choose a riff from ling that ISN'T awesome. TK's vocals may be troublesome for some, but he's an absolute demon on the fretboard. More than his technical skill, his sense of melody and knack for coming up with distinct, yet catchy riffs has always awed me. I love this riff in particular because it's kind of wacky-sounding, yet furious and intense at the same time. This one also feels a bit more "thematic" than a good bit of TK's other songs since it's used a good way though the song and not just as an intro/outro thing.
9mm Parabellum Bullet - Termination (the main riff here - starting at 00:10. it plays a bit throughout the song. You can hear it for a bit longer @ 3:18 as it closes out the song, and eventually ends without distortion)
Yoshimitsu Taki was, at one point, one of my favorite guitarists next to TK. A lot of his riffs in early 9mm material were catchy and had a distinct style to them. I enjoy this riff because it sounds beautifully out of place. It sounds like it was lifted from a cheesy European folk metal song, yet here it is in a "hard" "indie-rock" track? A wonderful microcosm of 9mm's subtle genre grafting at the time.
EDIT: Here's another really simple, but effective one that i'm fond of:
OGRE YOU ASSHOLE - ロボトミー (opening riff, used throughout most of the song)
I love how OYA took this one, repetitive riff and expanded it into what is imo one of the best songs they've ever done. It's simple, but it has a groove to it that sucks you in makes you nod along; almost like that of a really sleek hip hop beat.

Awesome thread idea! This so interesting. Love the Dir en grey and Radwimps picks!

Some personal faves of mine include:

Though, if we're gonna talk Radwimps... mine is 実況中継. (starts about 0:23 and then main chorus outro riff)

I just can't get enough of it. I really love the guitarwork in this entire song but that particular one makes me lose my mind.

    Mucc - 極彩 (0:26/main riff)

Mucc has always done really guitar driven music (considering their guitarist is the main composer, surprise surprise) but this riff when first heard it just ripped my head off. And that feeling just never left me. I'm not a guitarist so I can't give you any technical reasonings. Just that it always left a really strong impression on me and was every bit as catchy as the vocal melody and really, more so.

NoGoD - Mr. HEAVEN (intro/main riff)

Same reason as above, only I feel like you could throw a rock and hit a NoGoD song with super solid riffage so this kind of comes down to personal preference. But I find this song beastly.

FACT - slip of the lip (intro/main riff - but skip the first minute there's no music until then.)

This may be the de facto signature FACT riff. I feel like this was the riff that launched a large portion of their fanbase. And rightfully so. It's catchy as hell. And it's one of the few from this era that wasn't swallowed up by their heavy electronic influences. It's just really fun and, back when I heard it for the first time, was unique sounding. It left it's mark on me.

Hopefully I can edit in another pick later. But I basically picked songs that when I think of them... the part that comes to mind first is the guitar riff and not any other part of that song.

Are there any albums from them that you find particularly recommendable?
    -
On a different note, EMI MARIA just dropped an album called "Euphoria". I've liked a few of her songs in the past, but she never managed to convince me entirely. This new stuff sounds promising though - especially if you're into atmospheric pop-r&b ala Jhené Aiko. It's a sound that I haven't heard in Japan's pop/r&b realm to a great extent, but i'm glad someone finally caught the memo.

Her braids in this video is a good look. The song is a bit disjointed, and i don't really care for the clubby mid-section around 1:51, but overall I appreciate that she's trying something a bit different. I've heard far too much J-r&b that was just staunchly formulaic, so this is nice to hear.

So, we have this "Rate this riff" thread posted by @Zeus like ages ago, but we never had any kind of thread where we could just sit back and think of our personal "top choices" in terms of "j-rock" riffs? I am gonna fix that!

So the point is very simple - post max. 5 of your top choices when it comes to your essential/most cherished riffs/riffages in Japanese rock/metal (VK or not, doesn't matter!), and make sure to open up on your choices: what makes it great? What makes it memorable/"essential" in your case?

Mind those questions before moving on with MAX. 5 choices, so you guys better refrain from spamming 10 youtube embeds without any further explanations. PS: use spoilers for YT links!

    My example:

    1. X JAPAN - Miscast
    (intro/main riff)

It's not a big surprise that most of my all-time favorite vk riff-rockers (Hyena, Unknown...Despair...a Lost, G.) actually stem from this banging number by X! While the main riff itself is nothing short of similar to something you could hear quite often in 80s glam acts, I still consider it as an important 'mold' for definitive vk influences: groovy, rocking guitars that easily adapt to sinister-sounding verses, yet to poppy hooks and choruses as well! So it's more or less "definitive nostalgia" to me

    2. Dir en grey - Ryoujoku no Ame
    (intro/main riff)

I had a bit of hard time in exploring Dir stuff that I liked a lot with PROMINENT RIFFING! Ironically enough this came out at the time when their catchy guitarwork was at its lowest and favored Western-ish drop approach instead, so I still consider this to be a "black sheep" of MOAB singles. In addition,  this is one of the few Dir songs where you could just cut a riff or two from any part, and I could name you this exact song as a response. But all that fussy talk aside, fans might disagree with me when it comes to discussing this exact riff (fun fact: Dir songbook(s) even define that verse chugging as part of that "melodic" intro/outro) but I felt that this is where Kaoru and DIe's cooperative guitarwork is done RIGHT and with a good, unique taste - as in not taking a leaf out of Luna Sea's book.

Oh, the song itself is a bonanza of melancholic, yet melodic and memorable "Dirriffs" in my case too

    3. Radwimps - Oshakashama
    (intro/main riff)

I usually tend to disregard standard J-indie/"emo" tracks due to superior, technical capabilities in any other department than guitarwork (e.g. drumwork in AKFG), but Radwimps proves me wrong: rhythmic, synchronized tap riff (a.k.a main riff) that actually emphasizes the backing instrumentation rather than takes all the attention away from them (you know that moment when guitar riffing literally makes you forget about bass, drums and perhaps even vocals? It's nothing surreal tbh). As a result, we get a grandiose, yet playful entirety of instrumental expertise by each member. Hands down one of the most definitive "J-indie" riffs to me (well I don't know where to lump Radwimps anyway?) .

I cannot think of other numbers for now since there are way too many, urgh.
So feel free to share and discuss!

Yeah. I'm not really knowledgeable on band activities with labels and all that stuff; but at first glance it looks a little convoluted. Something like their contract with The End Records could have only consisted of a requirement to release a few albums, tours, and then they'd be done; but who knows?
