I think Ains bands do fairly well, especially Diaura, but I don't think they're popular enough that they even cross a common Japanese person's mind.

From what I've heard, mega-popular groups are things like Golden Bomber and any of the uber bands from the late 90s (Kuroyume, Luna Sea, X, Pierrot, Buck-tick, anything associated with Diru, etc). Aside from them, I don't think anyone really cares :staru:

Here's some hard data from visunavi, twitter and ameba.

Their followers on social media might be a good metric. Athougth Len from TBS has 94K followers on twitter (even more than dir en grey and almost as much as much as lunaseaofficial :O), it was due to his rescued kitten Kotetsu going viral. So individual band members might have more fame, but that fame won't necessarily extend to the rest of the band.

Paradeis and Piass are no longer active, but judging by their follower count on their old ameba accounts, they all floated around the 2K number.

Live data:

  • Elysion's first one-man will be at Ruido K3 (capacity: 150), but the largest venue they played at is Holiday Shinjuku which houses 450 people.
  • THE BLACK SWAN's biggest one man was at Tsutaya O-West (capacity: 600) and they regularly play at ~300 capacity live houses
  • Liphlich's biggest one-man was at Ebisu Liquidroom (housing a capacity of about 900)
  • The biggest venue Grieva has played at was Makuhari Messe (10,000) for Visual Japan Summit 2016
  • Scapegoat's many one-man's have played out their finals in ~300 capacity live houses, but they have been a part of bigger events at O-EAST (1300)
  • UNDER FALL JUSTICE seems to centralize their activity around HOLIDAY NEXT Nagoya (capacity: 300)
  • Kuroyuri to Kage headlined a live last year at Shinjuku LOFT (500)

DEZERT are only known in the vk scene (they could be considered famous there though, they are doing very good for a vk band).

All bands listed in your post are bands that 98% of the "normal" japanese population are unaware of.

I know. that's V-Kei in generally has a bad view in Japan and is small & unpopular.
I mean only in the scene anyway.

Also yeah Bands like X Japan / LunaSea ect. are really famouse in Japan.

Thanks so much!
The data about the Live Houses are really nice, never knew about there cap. It's to know this now.
Would have never guessed Grieva played at such a huge venue already [Even if it was a Festival]

About the Social Medias:
I guess Ameba is more reasonable when it comes to popularity in Japan then Twitter[Which is probably worldwide more deciding?]

Thanks for the answers all ! :)

Yes. You don't exactly advertise that you're into vk if you're expected to socialise outside of the circles of the already initiated. And I can see why, the "mainstream vk scene" (bands that subscribe to the typical behaviour and sales tactics with cheki and whatnot) has a lot of questionable things going on in it as I'm sure you're aware. To be honest my aversion to these bands have only increased ever since I came to Japan and noticed just how little the music seem to matter to the vast majority of fans. And I guess people, even if they don't partake in this mitsu culture, don't want to risk being seen as such a person.

That and the fact that Japanese mainstream culture is very conservative and narrow by default so a lot of people hide subculture interests either way in the broad public regardless to what area it might pertain.

I don't know if I'd say it's viewed 'badly'. It's certain not popular, but I wouldn't say it's stigmatized.  I mean of course it may depend on the area, but in my own experiences with vkei culture vs. the general public, it's more just seen as another hobby, if an unusual one. When it comes up and I mention having an interest in it I get a lot more curious questions and ooh-ing and aah-ing over the make-up and crazy hair than anything (before immediately losing interest, haha), and that's in both cities I visit and the rural area I live in.

is that true, visual kei is bad viewed in japan?

A friend of mine who lives in Japan still and is in the scene told me that's it's bad viewd cause of the girls who prostitutes thereself to attend at all concert ect.
Also she told me thats some already start at the age of 14 to buy Lolita Dresses / touring the band ect. and if they are over 18 they get stuffed in School Uniforms and marketd as under 17 lol.

Wouldn't call it a lie really since in Korean the girls are prostitute thereself for KPop aswell [Saesang Taxis and all this lol]

Another reason might be the bad news sometimes [Drugs ect.] which gives a bad light to the scene aswell.

Not sure if people are interested enough to actually dig up scandalous bangya or drug stories, just because that kind of discussion has been all over some English language websites. I guess the uninvolved public in Japan is just quick to agree they don't know anything about the scene, but as show biz is a wild world, it may as well be weird enough to avoid. Think about the few VK artists actually representing the scene to the public eye - TMR may seem friendly enough, but Gackt or Yoshiki both depend on their image as eccentric rock stars.

My experience has been similar to the one frayed describes, although Luna Sea are about as "visual" as it gets for me. Some people become reminiscent of the 90s and the crazily shaped, colorful hair, but otherwise they just seem amused by a foreigner liking something that weird and wacky. It's the same for other lesser-known music genres though.

Agree, and in Golden Bomber's case, you know you're popular & mainstream in Japan when you got to appear alongside people like Arashi & SMAP on national TV, more than once. Then let's not forget Kouhaku. They didn't make it last year, but they managed to perform there for FOUR years straight. Their concerts are held at big venues like Yokohama Arena, Saitama Super Arena, etc. ;)
