"Iconic" PVs (a.k.a "THE" PVs by your favorites)

Recommended Posts

Didn't see this around here, so thought of making one:

Just like in the western music scene, Japanese/Asian artists have their own "definitive", so called "THE" Pvs. Most of them are given that status due to various factors, including their excessive shock factor or some of the most memorable/unique ways of expressing their message visually.

That being said - what are "THE" pvs by your favorite bands/artists that you consider to be "iconic" or "definitive"? Why does it work/what does make your choice "Iconic"?

Before someone goes asking - yes, you can choose other PVs from already mentioned bands, just as long as you explain your picks properly and don't do multi-post spams.

E.g. my choices:

Dir en grey - Obscure

Why it works: As far as I'm concerned, this is what made DEG's "overshooting" shock factor one of their staple characteristics: hideous, absurd mix of "mild" gore, porn, vomit and other randomness is quite strong enough to burn itself into your head. Internet surfing enthusiasts in '03 couldn't really expect themselves to stumble upon something that literally "screams" the message of said music - and the message is anything but family-friendly :). I am not saying that DEG pioneered the making of shock value-based PVs, but they surely gave it enough exposure and interest afterwards (you can already pinpoint the consequences)...

Sheena Ringo - Honnou

Why it works: What you'd normally consider to be quite harmless happens to be quite freaky and kinky in one way or another. This is how I, and perhaps many other innocent fans at that time, interpreted Shiina's most popular PV ever - "Honnou". I like how musical accompaniment really fits the flow of PV: starting out as somewhat laid-back, albeit with some scary undertones (blood bags, Shiina breaking glass panes, some girl-on-girl action...) - and ending up on almost fierce, but still lovely tone (Shiina showcasing her true "I don't care - I'm strong and independent!"-kind of image in the end). Even with such simplistic ideas like glass breaking, you can come up with something what is being defined as the "PV with many meanings". The hell, if you don't take my word for it - let this be a good reminder!
