    So, it's pointless converting .m4a to .mp3, then how about converting flac to alac? Is it a pointless thing to do too?

      (lossy) m4a -> mp3 = compressed audio, you're transcoding.

      FLAC -> ALAC -> FLAC you can do a million times and it will still be lossless, no quality loss.

      And be careful, 'cause I think m4a can contain lossless (ALAC) or lossy data. So if it's lossless, m4a → mp3 would make more sense...
