A while back I re-sequenced Arche and threw And Zero and Tefu Tefu in there, which only succeeded in making the album even more long winded. Anyway, I had And Zero in the middle.

I can see that, but it didn't feel that way to me because I removed a lot of the filler to make space for those tracks.

Oh, Arche... that album could have been so much better if Dir en Grey actually gave a shit when organizing the tracklist.

Fun fact: "and zero" was there but I removed it because I couldn't figure out which of those two tracks to put first.

Well that's interesting! I didn't know so many people struggled with the placement of "and zero".

It'd be nice if one day they came up with an idea of forming an alter-ego band that went back to their old school VK roots and released GAUZE 2.0 lol.

I'd be down for that, but would they be able to pull it off?

  2. Someone really doesn't like instrumentals lmao, I personally think some of them help enhance the album's tone quite a bit with an easy example being Arche, "and Zero" really helps setting the mood that the album needs to flow better and I personally always place it as the first track in my personal playlist just before Un Deux or Tefu Tefu (still figuring out which track transitions better from it).

Also why do you not like "Ware, Yami, Tote..."? That thing has always been one of the album's highlights for me.

have a feeling Values of Madness is gonna end up becoming this album's Sustain The Untruth

As in the song Dir en Grey will play all the time but no one really likes?

The only track is strongly hate is UTAFUMI, which is surprising because it's like my second favorite single of theirs... Of their entire discography.  That's how much I love that single. I appreciate the raw-er vocals, but why does it sound like a live demo recorded on a phone, then someone broadcasted it on radio, and what was put on CD was a phone recording uploaded to youtube of the radio broadcast. It sounds really fucking weird compared to everything on the album.

I would not say it is that bad, but it is indeed a very bloated and busy sound, it is hard to listen.

  5. I actually thought and Zero transitioned really well into Tefu Tefu, however rearranging the album like that breaks the Zero Un Deux sequence which may be sort of a bummer.

The multi-type release thing specifically feels like a bit of a rip off with DEG because they rarely offer anything you haven’t heard before. It was shocking that Arche actually had two extra tracks that were original compositions. The rest of that shit where they just plaster Kyo’s vocal track over a remix or what have you needs to stop. It’s so lazy.

That unplugged version of The Final on Unraveling pisses me off. The instrumental sounds like it belongs in a Tim Burton movie.

It still baffles me that and Zero and Tefu Tefu are only bonus tracks...

  7. Bless, my lack of involvement with the DeG fanbase (or with any community in general, for that matter) saves me from a few minutes' worth of headache yet again. I have no idea who's this person you were all referring to.

  8. Here I sit completely clueless about this latest topic. Maybe it really is time for me to revisit the re-recordings. Any recommendations on where I should start?

I love Ain't afraid to die I so wish they would remake that one as it never appeared  remastered on any other album. A new version with a sound similar to that of kaishun would be fucking brilliant. I think Ain't afraid to die is their most lovely and beautiful song. It makes me cry to hear it sometimes. And I think it's so underrated and overlooked by most deg fans.

    Thoughts?

I never found it to be overlooked, people seem to agree that it was a good song that unfortunately didn't make it to Macabre for whatever reason, but there might not be much to discuss about it at this point since it was just a single with rather underwhelming remixes included. I would not trust Dir en Grey to make good work of it in a remake, however. The song is fine as it is.

As for my personal thoughts on that song, it used to be among my favorites back when I first discovered DeG. I don't listen to it as often today, but it still has a dear place in my catalog as an ever calming and beautiful song I occasionaly fall back onto.

It’s a tough listen these days, yeah. It’s got some of my favorite DEG songs on there, but I rarely listen to it in its entirety anymore.  As far as “classic” DEG goes, Macabre is the winner for me.

With that I agree, Macabre is still a great listen and stands proudly among their best works.

There was a period of time where I considered Kisou the holy grail of DEG recordings, but then one day it came across as too bloated. And as much as I criticize DEG’s production in recent albums, Kisou might be the absolute worst. Listening to it feels like chewing on tin foil. Songs like Zomboid and Pink Killer are such are garbled mess of static it’s hard to believe the guitars are actually playing notes.

Heavens, production alone dragged it down that much? The rest of the album still has its merits... for the whole decade I've been listening to this band it still stands among my favorites, but I can understand your criticism.

My seemingly completely unpopular opinion is that Beautiful Dirt is cool. I wouldn't ever say WTD is in my top DEG albums, but I think it's decent. Then again, I'm one of those heathens who puts Kisou dead last :P (although Filth is one of my all time faves).

That indeed is an odd opinion, even more so because as far as I know people tend to ignore FILTH or find it to be about average for a DeG song.

I do not mind Beautiful Dirt but WTD has way better songs that are more deserving of a re-recording.

How come you place Kisou dead last, though?

Interesting that you like sukekiyo's first album, but not TMOAB. I think the general opinion on here (or was it on last.fm?) is that IMMORTALIS is pretty bad, production-wise. I can't see it myself, though.

I like it but I can aknowledge its flaws, I do admit the album starts to fall apart as it enters the second half. I still enjoy a few of the latter songs in it, however.

Is it weird to like one and dislike the other? They don't sound very similar to me.

  14. ADORATIO really surprised me with how good it is, I wasn't actually looking forward to it for reasons even I am unsure of despite enjoying their first album, maybe I was just too focused on other things to feel excited. But I am glad I gave it a try, and it is even better to see it's being unanimously praised over here.

  15. I can't remember much from any of TMOAB's ballads, for me that album is simply bad, bad. I cannot enjoy anything from it, at all. I can only hope they won't include much from it in a future tribute album, the more MACABRE, GAUZE, KISOU and UROBOROS songs in it, the better.

On the topic of re-recordings though, I don't think I have ever listened to any of them more than once, I should probably give them a try again, but opinions here seem a bit conflicting, and I'm afraid of tainting the originals with a re-recording I can possibly not enjoy. I can only wish to be pleasantly surprised if anything.

  16. It is good that I barely even listened to Utafumi so it will feel fresh when they finally release a new album. Not that I really liked Utafumi in the first place, I thought it was a bit uninspired, but maybe within the context and atmosphere of a new album it will sound better. Time will tell.
