New Gackt+D'espa covers & more//Kaleidoscope's Vocal Covers

Recommended Posts

Alright, I covered some Versailles once again since someone on Youtube requested Serenade a while ago. I tried to work a bit on my performing but it still looks kind of weird :D

Would be great if you could give me some feedback again!

when it comes to vocals i'm really not an expert, but it seems pretty good to me. assuming there was no pitch-correction involved the intonation is pretty spot on and the shifts between normal and falsetto seem balanced aswell.

i might add a thing or two in terms of production if you don't mind :P

i don't know exactly what is the purpose of the video, if it's to just demonstrate the vocal skills it's fine, if it's to sound good as a whole i'd try to get closer to the balance between vocals vs. instruments of the original song, because now the song itself is by far to quiet ^^ this will actually also improve the overall impression of the vocals too if they're more "embedded" into the song itself btw.

also when doubling vocal parts or adding second melodies etc don't try to "sneak" them in, make it clear that there now is a second (third, fourth) vocal and also don't let them be too much in the center. try overdubbing it and pan it 100% left/right, that might make a much "opener" sound (i feel like i'm typing half of this post with "", it sucks talking about sound...)

at last more of a matter of taste, you're sort of generous on the reverb which adds a kind of valhalla-flair to the vocals. that sometimes actually fits the music itself pretty well beeing the cheesy track that it is^^ but perhaps try not to bury the dry signal so much in the reverb-mud, if you try to get the vocals "further away" (aargh "" again...) first try it with delay (stereo delay probably) before engaging the cathedrals-reverbs. delay adds depth to the signal, without putting too much mud on it.

btw. blue+gold? that t-bone tube-mic is pornography :D

First of all: Thanks for the compliment! I didn't use any pitch correction of course, I don't even know how to do that actually xD

And thanks so much for the tips, it's very much appreciated since I don't know much about producing :) The purpose is primary of course to show my vocal skills, but with the last few covers I also tried to get a good sound.

You're right with the song being a bit too low volume-wise - the problem is that there is no instrumental for the song so I had had to remove the vocals with Audition, but unfortunately some traces remained so I decided to turn my own vocals much louder so that the Kamijo isn't notable anymore. Nevertheless, I will try to improve that point in my next covers :)

Regarding the second vocal line, thanks for the tip, definitely going to try that next time! I didn't want to do them at all first but in the end I recorded them because I didn't want any original vocals left. I'm not quite sure what you mean with overdubbing though, could you explain that again? xD

Yeah, I added a lot of reverb this time :D I'm often not sure what kind of effect would fit the song, but just like you said, since the song is pretty cheesy and over-dramatic I decided to go for some heavy reverb ;D Definitely going to try the delay first next time, thank you very much for all of your advice :)

Haha, I know, I originally got it because it offers quite a lot for the medium price but somehow I came to love the design by now :D

well it's more or less just layering (also the term overdubbing might not be completely right here..)

what i meant is, when you have a second vocal (let's say a sixth or an octave above/below the main-voc) record it once; pan it 100% to the left, record it once again and pan that 100% to the right. that way you have the two melodies with the main one coming from the center, and the second coming from both sides. (you can also use this as doubling the main-voc itself to lay focus on important fragments of the vocals for a choir-like effect)

and what i meant with "hiding" those, make sure not to make them to quiet. they obviously have to be below the main-voc but not necessarily too much volume-wise, you can also push them further back by dropping more delay/reverb on them and reducing high-frequencies (2khz and aove or so...)

bragrl, i always answer too long...

TL;DR overdubbing =~ layering (and throw them all around the stereo-width)

Okay, now I get what you mean. Sounds like a good idea since it sounded rather weird when I panned the backings only left in one of my earlier covers :D Thanks for your advice once again :)

Okay, time for some new covers :D

My most recent one is Hunter's Season by Kamelot - in some parts I messed up the breathing and lost some of my stamina, but overall I'm satisfied with this I guess.

Another one I did is collaboration with a multi-instrumentalist and a female vocalist, Stirb nicht vor mir by Rammstein. Not really my favourite cover, but it was still fun to sing in German :D

Haven't posted something here in a while, but since I finished a rather special project, I thought I should share it with you. This is a full band cover of Zombie by Versailles featuring me on the vocals, including a nice little music video. Feedback would be really much appreciated!

I also uploaded some other vocal covers, if you want to share your opinion on those to, don't hesitate to do so ;)

Long time no see guys! Since I recorded another Japanese cover, I thought it should share it with you once again ;) Gackt has been a strong influence on my singing, so this actually the first time I really attempt to cover one of his songs since I didn't want to mess it up too much :D

I also did a Sweeney Todd cover not too long ago; in case some of you are interested:

Good work, like it! Hadn't commented on the band cover yet but it sounds really good!

What kind of mic do you use to record the vocals?

Thanks a lot for watching and giving some feedback man!

I use a T.Bone SCT-800; as far as I know it's a German model since you can find it in Thomann's online shop. It's decent I'd say, although I have some problems with balancing the volume when I'm not using compressor, but that might also be because I don't know much about technical stuff ;)
