Perhaps it could be confidence in the new material or confidence in performing it. What songs Dir en grey did showcase early on with DSS were plagued with performing mistakes. They couldn't get through Different Sense without awkward transitions to the chorus or the solo being butchered, or Kyo's wanting delivery on Lotus and Ruten no Tou. From the early insight on this album from the band, it looks like they went for performability first and foremost, which would explain a majority of the songs being performed now.

So, they're over the progressive scene of U and DSS, they've already done the metalcore with MOAB and WTD and a lightly edgier rock with V and SU and are now an alternative ballad band with this album.

BTW, the merch looks very sukekiyo. I like.

2014.11.17 TOUR14-15 BY THE GRACE OF GOD CLUB CITTA Kawasaki -a knot only-

Stage was pretty simple tonight, they had a huge screen in the back and 5 tall, slim speakers with a spotlight on top of each one, so they kind of looked like human silhouette in the dim light.

 

BGM was suddenly cut off and lights went off as well. And in the next moment a black and white video started. And they made it as creepy as possible in a Japanese-horror-movie-style creepy. There was some object at the bottom, but video only showed the top of it. To me it looked like some plastic bag, maybe iv bag, because there was something attached to it, maybe a tube (maybe!). There were two people crouching over the object, but only their arms and shoulders were shown. It looked a bit like someone tried to put two dimensions together and something went wrong - figures were bending down, but their hands didn’t touch the object, but went inside, but actually didn’t… and something was moving inside the bag (I guess the most catchy thing was that we had no idea what we were looking at XD).

 

Everyone was so distracted by the video that Kaoru playing first notes of the opening came as a big surprise Dim lighting can be also at fault. Suddenly he was standing on the stage and playing his guitar with a single spotlight directed at him. Soon Die joined and they started playing a very soft melody on guitars as an opening. Next was Shinya and Toshiya. Kyo came on stage as the last one. He was wearing a dark (black? navy? - my bet is black) jacket with embroidered gold emblem on the chest on the left side. His hair is very short on the sides, giving his hair a mohawk look, his roots are black with blond ends; it looked very cool. He also had a large dressing on the edge of his left hand, which was a bit soaked with blood

 

Instrumental opening smoothly led to the first song, a very sad ballad with guitar melodies prevailing the most. Throughout the night they kept mixing new songs with ‘older’ songs. Fans joined singing during SUSTAIN THE UNTRUTH with a really great energy. Second new song included so many high notes for Kyo, it was totally amazing. Bottom of the death valley started with the bass solo from Toshiya, which was also more delicate. Next two new songs (“flower song” and “crying song”) had again really nice guitar parts, second song had a video showing first someone’s eyes very slowly, very sad eyes and then her (?) face. I love Rinkaku and that moment when Kyo sings “Minerva”. And he always comes to the edge of the stage to rouse a roar from fans. 8th song (“lantern song”) was again a ballad. Lighting changed to orange and red, and those warm colors were contrasting greatly with the sadness of the song. Video for this song showed hundreds of paper lanterns flying up and a line of people (only silhouette) taking a photo of them.

At this point atmosphere changed slightly, and the following song was bit faster, rhythmical. The ending of the first part was heavier and fans showed that they are ready for that

 

They had many breaks between the songs, when Kyo was crouching down in front of drums and other members also stood a bit in the back. At those times it was pretty dark as well. I think it helped to set the right mood for all those ballads and sad songs.

 

Encore was much more energetic than the main part, they played some good old songs

During the first bit of encore Kyo wrapped microphone cable over his hand and it must have upset the cut/wound on his hand and it started to bleed. A lot. He smeared the blood over his face and across his chest, when he continued to sing blood was oozing over his arm.

But it didn’t stop him from enjoying the encore and minus the blood he behaved same as usual (even if that must had hurt a lot T_T). Kyo was asking the crowd for louder cheer, repeatedly asking if we can still go on before the last song.

(also, Kyo wrote a message for aknot saying that he is sorry for causing fans to worry and to enjoy the rest of the shows, his hand simply has to heal).

 

After the last song band members went into the part of throwing goodies to the fans. Kyo threw his bottles first as usual, then guitarists were throwing picks, Kyo came back again holding his towel and he actually wiped the blood from his chest and… totally failed at throwing it to the fans, the towel landed between the stage and the barrier, thanks to which *historical moment* Kyo’s towel was taken by ONE fan XD I would like to say it didn’t involve any bloodshed, but …oh well XD

But Kyo’s face when he failed at throwing his towel was absolutely adorable (even if it lasted only a very brief moment).

After that “business” went as usual and other members threw their towels/water bottles/beer/picks/drumsticks - ah Shinya was shooting rubber wristbands at the crowd (like a rubber band), which was priceless.

 

It was a really good concert that I enjoyed very much, it was not as heavy as DIR EN GREY concerts can be, but I really like new songs and the atmosphere was great!

We will see how setlist will change tomorrow (or rather today)

 

sounds to me like Touru brought a lot of sukekiyo into DIR EN GREY. oh well...
