  1. probably MUCC. They're accessible, make diverse music, but most of it doesn't sound like "western" stuff, but they're also not so foreign sounding that narrow-minded people will be turned completely off.

Pretty much this, I think especially Gokusai works very well, most people not familiar to Japanese music liked it when I played some songs to them.

  2. Thank you very much, I'm glad someone's posting here :) Well, I started kind of late with singing, but it's really motivating if you say I'm good for the amount I've sung, I'm sure practicing a lot! I will certainly try to get much better, I'm not even half there where I want to be ;D Next cover will probably be a song by Rammstein and Guren by Gazette, maybe in between some D'espa and Versailles stuff since Hizumi and Kamijo have a style of singing which fits mine.

  3. Thanks for your feedback guys, glad you like some of my covers :)

@Jenovalism: I will pay special attention to the "t" in the future - I guess it's partly because I'm German and we pronounce consonants kind of harsh.

Well, I already got some more done. Not really flawless since I recorded them rather spontaneously, but I think the one by Versailles fits my voice somehow.

    Versailles - Suzerain

    Gary Jules - Mad World

  4. Hey there, thank you very much for your feedback :) I'm glad you like my voice, that's a thing I always love to hear since many people say I have a weird voice. And yeah, I was pretty much at the very bottom of my range in the Sirenia song :D

Definitely agree that my screaming needs practice, imo they sound kind of... hollow. I'm only satisfied with the long scream after the bridge, but the rest could use some more power.

Yeah, I'd love to be in a band, but I just can't find one which fits my expectations. I tried one which covered mainstream rock songs (RHCP, The White Stripes etc.) but I'd prefer to do own songs and after that one I was in a punk rock band for a very short time, but I guess you can tell that my voice doesn't fit that kind of music at all :D

Well, I actually already did a new cover! It's Saishuu Ressha by MUCC in an acoustic version together with a friend of mine who plays the mandolin (he's normally a guitarist) we recorded in one take. Since it's really hard to get a perfect take, we just took one we thought to be decent, so there are a few slightly wrong notes and some stumbling regarding the lyrics. Anyway, hope you like our interpretation of this song! I apologize for my boring stageacting by the way :D

  5. @Jenovalism: I have my training once every week and me mostly do stuff to build up my voice, like making weird noises and singing the scale in different ways. Apart from that I have to sing some classical and pop music - at least with my recent vocal coach, with the one before I could choose my songs freely. We even did some Versailles and Gackt :D

I wouldn't recommend all those online singing tutorials though - I started with that too and compared to a real singing teacher it just doesn't really work because those people can't recognize your problems and therefore can't really help you to understand what you have to do.

And I definitely understand what you mean with the stuff you said about the sink cover - if you have a song you really want to do perfectly you are never completely satisfied with the end result and always find new flaws if you keep looking. I made that experience too (namely with Versailles' Serenade and 9GOATS' Heaven) ;D But well, you also find flaws because you keep getting better over the time, so just do it without thinking too much about people's opinion on the result - after all you can still rerecord the song later ;)

By the way, what did you think of my sink cover? It took me quite a while too, looking forward to hear your version :)

Ah, and I agree with Yasuhiro, your voice really has an Oldschool-VK touch. Would love to hear something from that direction from you!

  6. You're welcome :) Well, to me you sound like a bass or maybe a baritone so don't worry, it's only natural that the high notes are hard to sing. I'm a bass-baritone myself and it took me ages to reach the higher registers, but it is definitely possible - I'm sure you can get much higher than in your covers with your full voice, it's just a matter of technique. Maybe it's something with your breathing technique since that's essential to sing high and powerful notes. Imo it's definitely not too late for you to start with singing if that is what you really love to do, I started with 18 so you are not the only one ;) And as I said, you have a good voice so you should keep on going! I'd recommend a singing teacher though - I personally think there's a point it gets hard to improve your skills by yourself and that's actually pretty frustrating. Most vocal coaches can show you things you would never notice by yourself, so it's really a good thing to take some lessons and learn the basics.

I don't think it's a bad thing to have a VK-like style by the way, it's just important to gain some control over your voice (which many VK singers don't have :D) and make it sound good. A good example is Ryo of 9GOATS which you seem to like too ;)

I've been singing for a bit less than two years, I think I started somewhere in October 2009. I take singing lessons but in the beginning I sounded pretty crappy, that's only normal I guess :D And even today I'm often not happy with my singing oo I prefer to sing in Japanese too by the way (sounds weaboo, doesn't it? 8D), mostly because there are lots of vowels in that language which makes it easier to sing with vibrato ;)

About your other covers: I don't think you have to be ashamed of them, there are some nice parts in those songs too. Especially the 9GOATS one sounds sometimes good (are you comfortable singing their songs? I love to sing their stuff, it's nearly always within my range) and the Merry is alright too, only the end sounds a bit messed up :D Ah, and I think you have to work on your headvoice, sounds a bit insecure to me.

  7. Just listened to your vocal covers and since I think the musician's corner and especially vocal covers don't get enough attention on the board I decided to give you some feedback ;D

First of all: I prefer the jeniva cover - the deadman cover isn't bad or anything, but it sometimes sounds like you don't have enough control over your voice. There's some of that in the other cover to (especially in the chorus), but you can definitely hear an improvement in the verses and apart from that I think you have a really nice voice and that's the most important thing imo. You can improve your technique but you can never change the tone of your voice ;)

Ah, and another note: You sound very "VK", do you try to sound like that in purpose or is it just your style of singing? And may I ask for how long you have been singing?

So yeah, looking forward to more :)

  8. Hey there, it's been a while since I posted my covers here but after a long absence I decided to use my youtube account again and share some of my stuff with you :)

I just finished sink by 9GOATS BLACK OUT today, the falsetto part was really hard.

Another more recent one is this one, everything before this is pretty old.

Comments and criticism are very much appreciated, so if you think I suck, please tell me. Although I'd prefer if you tell me why and how can I approve ;)

  10. Probably the genre I'm listening the most to right now, I guess my favorite Post-Rock albums ever are "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" by GY!BE and "Hymn To The Immortal Wind" by Mono, both of them are incredibly intense.

I highly recommend Her Name Is Calla's album "The Quiet Lamb" by the way, great mix of Post-Rock, classical intruments and some acoustic stuff plus great vocals.

Has anybody got the recent Mogwai album? I think it's decent, but anything but spectacular. The only song that I truly love is "Song For A Forgotten Future" on the bonus disc, much better than the actual album if you ask me.

  11. So, this is weird. Helheim just release a new album and it sounds really, really good. I mean, I am a HUGE fan of their two demos and their two first albums, and I think Yersinia Pestis is a cool album. I've not heard Terrorveldet or Åsgårds Fall, but Blod & Ild, The Journeys and the Experiences of Death and Kaoskult are lame and boring albums. So I was surprised when I heard the new stuff today. Sounds really good. That's something I didn't think I would ever say about this band again.

Got this album as a promotional copy for reviewing and I have to say I definitely agree with you. I only know a few of their other songs, but they never really managed to impress me while the new release sounds just awesome. They asked me for an interview, so if you have any interesting questions (since you seem to know their discography better than I do) you can send me them via PM if you like to ;)

  12. the growls are actually great. Kyo's wet gutturals are some of the strongest I've heard in metal in all honesty. 2008-2009 they sucked and were absolutely terrible. Now? Great, but still not the greatest. As a vocalist I have always been extremely jealous of Kyos gutturals...I could never get my growls that low.

I completely agree with you. I'm not that much of a harsh vocalist, but his growls sound anything but weak - there are definitely better vocalists in that style out there, but to me his growls sound really intense and don't lack power at all. Didn't expect that his technique would go from horrible to very good (He's using his false chords, isn't he?).

Guess it's still a matter of perception though.

Anyway, I like the samples, I'm now really looking forward to Dum Spiro Spero since I also liked Hageshisa. Hope there will be some melodic songs where Kyo doesn't overestimate his range though, Lotus really bothered me.

  13. Don't a lot of Visual singers not sing properly to begin with? I'm not a vocalist and don't know shit, but I hear some people criticize Visual singers, not because lol dey suck but because their method of singing is poor and complain that they will ruin their voice. I've heard that complaint tossed around towards whats his face in -OZ-. They don't complain saying he sucks but complain that he's not singing properly and will ruin his voice.

His technique when it comes to clean singing is actually pretty good (even in the beginning he didn't mess it up), but I'm not sure about his raw singing and the screaming since it's hard to identify his technique. Sounds sometimes really raspy to me, not sure how he does it. I'm pretty sure this whole vocal chords trauma is because he kept singing for a long time during this coughing he talked about though, it's probably not too surprising that it left some damage.

Well, let's hope he can recover one day, I still don't give up hope that he'll find a way to rebuild his damaged vocal chord.

  14. I knew this would happen sooner or later but still I'm incredibly sad. They really meant a lot to me and were probably the only band I always loved no matter how much my taste changed, I somehow always felt they should play music together until their were old men having released lots of stuff people could complain about being so much worse than their old albums :D I'm glad that I could at least see them twice and thankful for all the great songs they released, both old and new stuff. Hope to see the guys again in the future, I guess at least the other three won't quit making music.

I feel terribly sorry for Hizumi though, I guess there isn't anything more terrible than this for a vocalist who's truly dedicated to his work. Hope that he will find a way to recover someday and return, it would be really sad if he could never sing again.

  15. I love long songs, wouldn't have imagined that some years ago since I couldn't bring the motivation to listen to songs longer than eight minutes :D

My favorite long song is April.#02 by Kashiwa Daisuke, which is about 27:36. His songs Stella and Write Once, Run Melos, which are about half an hour too, are also awesome.

The longest song I've listened to so far is Heliogabalus by Rorcal, 70 minutes of Doom/Drone - hard to get into but really intense.

Other favorite long songs of mine:

-Condor & River by Her Name Is Calla

    -Most long songs by Envy

-Burial At Sea and The Battle To Heaven by Mono

-Past Midnight by The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble

    -Pulse/Surreal by Lantlôs

-Sur l'océan couleur de fer and the two parts of Écailles de lune by Alcest

-Suicide Season by Bring Me The Horizon (tell me what you want, it's amazing)

-Zu Träumen wecke sich, wer kann and the whole Durch den Traum album by Dornenreich

-He Films The Clouds Pt.2 by Maybeshewill

-Like It's Your Last by Devil Sold His Soul

    -Prayer by Mutyumu

There are a lot more, but those ones are the first that come to my mind.

  16. It's probably an April Fool's prank. The timing is way too convenient. I wouldn't be surprised if this was some marketing ploy to get them promotion for their next single.

This. I'm sure they wouldn't do such an announcement on April 1st, even they should know the meaning of that day. I bet tomorrow they will announce a new album or new single ;)

Anyway, pretty hardcore for an April Fool's prank :D
