I can dig some Xasthur and Burzum! Not really into the lo-fi end of BM here... tho kinda always wanted to try out Judas Iscariot - any preferred starter album?
-
YES! so much YES! Also, gotta love their studio vids. xD

Cute vid.

Ah yes, I can see what you mean. It's just that it all flows together nicely for me, I can't really separate these things in my mind (the deathcore part, or the black metal parts, or the occasional grindcore-like parts, etc), since I came to expect such a mixture from A.N. But yeah, I can imagine it gets irritating for those who don't like this typical death/metalcore practice.

Hmm I see. I saw this so-called metalcore influence mentioned on several occasions but I can't really hear it or put my finger on it... they definitely changed somewhat, that's for sure. I like almost all of their stuff equally, tho I have to admit I'm a bit more partial towards their more recent works (especially In the Constellation of the Black Widow). Btw just listening to a Thorns compilation of old demos and such, and came across these "drumless" tracks that you mentioned. Very interesting.

Wow, thanks a lot for the descriptions and recommendations! Honestly I enjoy all those subgenres of black metal (especially the black-thrash and industrial kind), so already it sounds pretty neat. edit: Speaking of industrial influences, do you like Anaal Nathrakh? They're one of my faves when it comes to "br00tal" music, and their previous album was pretty solid too. They're recording the next full-length as we speak, should be something to look forward to.

Thanks for the additional background info. Cool how much influence Snorre/Thorns had on the genre! I've now listened to the album, it is indeed a nice and enjoyable one -- I was a bit surprised by the industrial elements but they work real well, especially on Shifting Channels for example. Seems like I still have a long way to go in terms of black metal. xD Gonna give Dødheimsgard a listen too, later, after Thorns and Nidingr. Thanks for the mentions / recommendations!

I definitely hear the similarity! I might check these guys out, they seem pretty good. I already sampled some Thorns last night cuz a friend of mine said the new Mayhem track reminded him of them.

This isn't visual kei, nor rock particularly, I just found this to be rather amusing. Listen to the the riff that starts at 1:07 of Masami Tsuchiya's song KAFKA (released in 1982)... ...and tell me if it didn't remind you a bit of The White Stripes' Seven Nation Army (from 2003).

^ Tho bear in mind that I probably am more excited about the new album coming than to actually calmly "weigh" the track, so I'm kind of biased. Also yeah, I agree that the last one was distinctly "Mayhem", there are even parts of it I enjoy -- it just gets hard to listen to, with that production (which was probably sort of part of the concept xD).
-
Song's still kinda 'meh', video is pretty sweet tho.

I'm not too well-versed in black metal (I like to listen to a bit of all kinds of music), so it was good enough for me. Also loved the production! I wasn't a fan of the sound of their previous album.

Dammit, the new Mayhem song is slaying me so hard. Single out at the end of April, album dropping at the end of May. CAN'T WAIT.

^ Psycho Pass isn't bad (tho only watched like 5-6 eps xD), if you like Ghost in the Shell it should be up your alley.

Weird that they made a PV for it only just now. xD But song's still good.

Thx for the video link! Sounds okay so far.
