Had the pleasure of witnessing the awesome natural force known as Swans on stage last night. The opening act was Pharmakon, a.k.a. some tiny blonde-haired gurrl who went mental for half an hour on great slabs of noise often generated from her breaths and screams, but she had some primitive percussive aid as well. Sometimes she got down and walked around the audience while screaming, it was a bit creepy but a good noisy intro to the gig I guess. Then came the stars of the evening. At first, only two members of Swans were on stage, riling up the atmosphere with some noisy dulcimer 'n' cymbals droneyness, and then gradually the other musicians made their way up and took their places. Honestly, the first 20 mins or so were a bit taxing but once I "got into the groove" (i.e. getting used to all the repetition and slowly blooming aural pieces) it was pretty sweet. The band sure is a presence of its own. I loved the building of tension and the fluctuation between quiet and extremely loud parts. It had a kind of tribal vibe to it, totally massive. We applauded them for like 5 mins in the end, haha (rightfully so: the gig lasted for almost exactly 2.5 hours!). Excellent night. Here's a random vid:
  2. ストロベリーソングオーケストラ (Strawberry Song Orchestra) will release their new CD titled "影孕む密葬、月は静寂" (Kage haramu missou, tsuki wa seijaku) on 2014/11/09. Including the songs (not sure if they are in order): - 暗室のメソッド (Anshitsu no Method) - 影切のオルグ (Eisetsu no Org) - 機械と点滅の葬列 (Kikai to tenmetsu no souretsu) - 火葬のテスト (Kasou no Test) - 侵蝕 (Shinshoku) By the way, CD/promotion comment of the release will be written by Gara (MERRY). Sounds good so far. Lookin' forward to it.

Currently reading The Place of Dead Roads by William S. Burroughs. Pretty standard Burroughsian stuff with all the usual, ehm, features but it's pretty good. Of course it has a bunch of references and character names from his other novels as expected. xD Seems to be a twisted kind of western so far, curious where it'll branch out to later. Also reading (on and off) a thick anthology of old ghost/horror stories compiled by some Hungarian dude. Poe, Byron, Dickens, Kipling etc. Going terribly slow with it + so far it's kinda fluctuating in terms of quality and enjoyability. Not bad, all in all, I guess.

Got these beauties at last night's Swans gig (which was amazing but more on that later in the appropriate thread).

just to have some positivity in here too... XD Prolly one of the best (or better) MEJIbro singles out there. The title track is pretty much a quintessence of what they're about in top form: driving rhythmic guitars coupled with Tsuzuku's catchy melodic chorus, and of course his screams (the guitar solo is pretty ace too). Akercock raised my eyebrow at first because of those, uhm, vocals but ultimately it's a pretty fun heavy track, in the vein of Apocalypse. The closing song Divergence is the icing on the cake, and is one of my top favorite MEJI' tunes, it just works so well and has so much power. They really caught some cool melodies and emotional atmosphere with that one (without being sappy). Ace stuff. | wish they'd replicate some of the awesomeness here onto their upcoming album~ (even tho I know their style has changed over these 2.5 years)

^ It's pretty lame and diluted even compared to their last album so... pretty much.

    lol go Makoto~
  11. VELVET EDEN is the only one out of those bands that I really love. I liked SUICIDE ALI too (shame they disbanded).

^ I was severely let down by Deliver Us from Evil... tho I didn't much like Sinister either. Deliver... had some nice moments but all in all it got kinda lost in what it was really trying to be (cop thriller or mystical horror). Some of the visuals were nice tho, but shame about the endless annoying jump scares.
  13. ^ He's also the official drummer of Közi's band ZIZ (who are recording a new album and I guess will have more gigs accordingly?), plus doing support for a miriald other projects.

The Doom Generation - A friend of mine recommended this director Gregg Araki for me to check out, this was my first taste. Pretty fun nihilistic, bit nonsensical / weird teenage roadtrip kinda movie in a twisted way. Awesome visuals. All in all, cool stuff (also dat soundtrack). Mysterious Skin - Another one by Mr. Araki, this one is newer and way more serious in tone. Totally disturbing but beautifully presented and executed. Kinda heartbreaking story actually. I loved this one too, so def gonna seek out more of his works.

Voted for SADS in the end, cuz almost all of their stuff is at least decent/okay, even the releases after their reunion... while I can only tolerate Kuroyume till the beginning of their punky era.
  19. ^ I recommend starting with their first two mini albums (at least those are my faves).

DIM all the way, baby~ It's one of the band's most consistent and well-put-together albums with some great songs to boot, not to mention the atmosphere. I couldn't get into NIL when it was released, didn't see what the big deal was. Some good songs on there but nothing special. Nowadays I appreciate it more but DIM is just in a whole other league.
