  1. I used to have favorite bands and I still do consider a selected few as being my absolute favorites, but lately I tend to think of my favorite music more in terms of albums. I find that it's very hard for a band to consistently release quality material or at least a majority of it (quality as in being to my liking since there's a lot of subjectivity involved in what constitutes a quality release). There are bands that almost always release stuff I absolutely love (ex. The Birthday Massacre, DEG, Ling Tosite Sigure), but there are also bands who have certain releases I really enjoyed, but not necessarily all their stuff is that good in my eyes. I tend to think most bands fall in the last category for me, hence why my favorite music is usually certain albums and less certain bands. When it comes to my favorite bands, yes, I have trouble picking an absolute favorite album since I love them all. As for genres, I like a lot of them, but there's also quite a lot of stuff I don't like in almost all of them so they're not that representative for my music taste. Also there are genres that I usually dislike but there's still one or two bands I find amazing in that particular genre. I use genres as vague indicators for what I might like, but ultimately the sound of that particular band is what matter the most.

  2. I actually wanted to vote for the 2012 contest because I listened to way more Japanese rock that year compared to previous years, but I just couldn't decide on just one choice for certain categories so in the end I ended up not voting at all. It's also quite hard for me to pick a VK artist/release over a non-VK one or the other way around since I enjoy both. I think having the possibility to enter 3 choices for certain categories is a really good idea!

  4. My first contact with Japanese music (excluding Sailor Moon OST songs) was in 2006. A friend of mine showed me Kagerou's Zetsubou ni Sayonara and Wrist Cutter PVs, then Miyavi's Are you ready to rock? PV. It wasn't really love at first sound, but it was definitely interesting so I took everything he downloaded to give it all a listen later, which didn't really happen. Then a few weeks later I stumbled upon some guy's profile on a site dedicated to industrial music. He had a big DIR EN GREY background picture. Upon seeing that picture my sister asked who those Marilyn Manson lookalikes were. I knew a had some of their songs and a video from my friend, so we both watched the Obscure PV and that's when it finally clicked for me. We ended up downloading their complete discography that day. I still remember how confused we were listening to Missa and Gauze because they sounded nothing like Obscure. Nevertheless, DEG is still one of my favorite Japanese bands today.

  5. They're bringing PLUNKLOCK back because the band wanted to tour Europe again. I'm not really happy about this, I don't think people will rush to see the same band twice over such a short period of time. But bringing a more popular band is no easy job, it's costing them a lot of money as it is. I don't think they can afford it. So at the moment, it's either indie bands or nothing at all.

And about Orochi, they were voted to come back by the European fans, so technically it wasn't the promoter's decision. We had the chance to see some great bands, but no, people still wanted to see Orochi. They probably didn't even bother to check out the other bands in the poll. Seems the EU fans do want more of the same after all.

  6. Has anyone heard the album? If so, what did you think of it?

The Birthday Massacre is my favorite band and I think they really topped themselves again with this release. Very captivating and beautiful start to finish. I though it balanced their fun poppy side with their otherworldly and ethereal side pretty well. A very dark album thematically, for sure. Favorite song overall is definitely "Play With Fire".

  7. Sarang was working on a 4th album, but I'm not too sure about when it will be released. He had birthday gigs earlier on, and it was mentioned then. His last release is from 2009 or 2010 I think. A digital single.

btw, nice line-up of artists you have there :D

Oh, I see, that's good news, I hope we'll get to hear it soon, his last album was way back in 2007 if I remember correctly. I listened to all 3 of his albums, but I kinda lost track of him lately. So he had a "new" single, I'm gonna have to go hunt for that. :P

    And thanks! :D

  8. Ohh, I like this thread! I like Seo Taiji and Kim Sa Rang too, I remember he made some buzz with his first album, but I don't know what happened afterwards, he does seem pretty overlooked today.

Here are some of my favorite Korean bands at the moment:

The Pony (포니) - They started off as alternative/indie rock but they went into a more new wave influenced direction on their latest EP.

    NfRVrw4pQW8

GOGOSTAR - They call their style disco punk and they're probably one of the most unique bands in South Korea right now, both in terms of sound and image.

    FNGXiYvsp4M

Glen Check - Insanely catchy indie electro-pop with perfect English vocals.

    2r4UnHQzGVg

Eloise (엘루이즈) - So far they've only released one EP, but I really like their music, hoping to hear more from them!

    pjFUBABiqls

Aaaand I think that's enough for now.
