Dunno what exactly constitutes "ambient rock/metal" but there's a kinda atmospheric black metal-ish band called Lychgate who has an album out this year (?), which is pretty good. In a similar but darker and "uglier" fashion, you could try the band Portal too, if you don't already know them. (I might be off the mark tho with these suggestions xD)

thanks for the tips, lol i see how my description might be confusing, it was aimed a little towards teh shoegaze/postrock/doom/drone corner, but everything else (new..) is actually much appreciated aswell

Check out Radare http://radare.bandcamp.com/ they play a self-described ambient doom jazz with a twist of atmospheric post-metal. They're one of my favorite bands and both of their releases are top-notch!
