  1. The post-Euronymous Mayhem cycle repeats. "Hey, maybe this one will be good." A year later nobody remembers the album... The band's always bragging about how their latest album is "less triggered than usual" but Hellhammer's kit still sounds like shit.

Hard disagree on black metal. Black metal = cryptic, rural, glorifies antiquity. vk = aggressively cosmopolitan and modern, even if you go back to the oldschool stuff. Combining the two would just be incoherence, or one of the two would just be reduced to superficial flavoring (probably black metal). And you know they wouldn't be taking influences from the good bands. There will never be a Grand Belial's Key-influenced vk band in this or any universe. I say crust punk. Crossover thrash-leaning vk tends to work out pretty well, so this probably would too. And the one problem of the genre-the asinine politics-probably wouldn't be inherited.

Funny, DSS is exactly where I gave up on them. I guess here's my unpopular opinion: DEG are unlikeable businessmen who made a career out of floating with the tide. Glossy Kuroyume tribute act -> borderline-vk with industrial metal influences -> nu-metal -> nondescript 00s wristcutter rock -> djent/core crap (we are here). Oh wait, there are some meandering melodic instrumental sections and lots of falsettos from Kyo, so it's actually avant-garde djent/core crap! Their best moments nowadays are those brief transition periods where they slightly withdraw from their latest Western influences or incorporate them more lightly more into their own sound, which is why Uroboros feels so sincere compared to what came after it. If they ever "evolve" in a way that doesn't involve scavenging riffs from some dead/dying tribal tattoo 'metal' subgenre that metalheads don't even like, remind me to eat my shoe.

They're too linked to my late adolescence for me to ever rate them objectively. I'll forever associate them with Naruto AMVs and embarrassing early 2000s forums where we all used signature banners made for us by the one guy there who knew how to use photoshop filters.

I'll listen to music recorded on a 4 track tape in an outhouse if I like the songs. My issue with DEG is that they actually seem to jump through expensive, time-consuming hoops specifically to make their albums sound shitty. Egregiously fake, soulless sounding drum trigger samples and Death Magnetic-tier compression isn't some romantic case of off-the-cuff, spirit-over-professionalism passion or whatever, it's not fucking lo-fi black metal, it's just good* songs turned into plastic by shitty production/mastering. People here aren't audiophiles for being bugged by distractingly shit sound anymore than you'd be a snobby food critic for not wanting cat litter poured on your spaghetti. * Well, some people seem to think so. I'm a lot more impressed by their 'generic vk' era than their middlebrow Mike Patton-meets-shitty-deathcore era.
  8. I know he sounds just like Mortuus, but he's not. Just trust me on this. Other than that, no hints... 😀 They probably took after each other's vocals one way or the other, kinda like how all those Brazilians sound the same, or how Fenriz and that guy in Aura Noir/DHG sound a bit alike when they do the drunken viking shout thing. Rotting Christ's new stuff stinks, but it's palatable for me live, as long as I remember to view it as cheesy fun beer metal. They basically invented the main Greek BM sound, let em coast now.

I'm looking for old, edgy grimdark vk after vk kind of evolved away from 80s speed metal territory, but (here's the important part) before western nu-metal/alternative metal influences started creeping in. Basically, not too soft, but no chugga chugga riffs. for reference, I like Deshabillz, Madeth Gray'll, old(!) Dir en Grey, Aliene Maφriage, La'Mule, Cali Gari when they had their second singer, Genkaku Allergy and some others. I find that sort of mix of over-the-top melodrama and quasi-punk aggression compelling. There's probably a huge chunk of late 90s stuff that fits the bill. Besides what I named, what's the cream of the crop?
