  2. What level of Japanese are you at?

Beginner level, starting intermediate in September

Where do you usually order your VK music? Cdjapan I guess?

I don't own any physical VK music, that's why I wasn't sure. I looked on Amazon but singles are about £20 each, and I'm sure there's somewhere cheaper than that.. I hope :/

  3. I just realised I never made an intro post. I am the user Renge (named after Renge Miyauchi from Non Non Biyori, one of the few anime I've enjoyed recently)

I used to be way into anime and manga, but now I'm more into music. I still like anime and manga, but not as much as I did. I'm 18 y/o and studying Japanese as a minor at uni (in the UK - if anyone could tell me the best places to order VK CDs without the insane shipping costs to the UK, please let me know.)

I've only recently gotten into visual kei... sort of. When I was about 15 I had a brief period where I liked visual kei, but I can't even remember what bands I listened to, so I'm basically starting over. Music is a huge part of my life and there are tons of different kinds I like. I enjoy post-rock, post-punk, jpop (sometimes kpop, but not as much), emo (as in The Saddest Landscape, La Dispute, Touche Amore etc)... I'll try listening to anything that seems interesting, really.

My current favourite vk bands are Mejibray, Galeyd, DEG, Rentrer En Soi and D'espairsRay, but I don't know a ton of vk bands so I'll probably gain a lot more favourites as time goes on.

Anyway, my intro is dumb and I rambled a lot, so sorry for that :/

EDIT: my last.fm is miyauchi_renge if anyone wants to add me lol

  4. I thought this might be an interesting thread. Post what your oldest and newest music releases are, either in your digital library or physically. Doesn't necessarily have to be restricted to J-music, although you can if you want of course.

    For J-music only, mine are:

Oldest: Dir en grey - MISSA, July 25th 1997

    Newest: MEJIBRAY - Nepenthes, April 1st 2015

    For all music in general:

Oldest: King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King, 1969 (on vinyl! c: )

    Newest: still MEJIBRAY - Nepenthes

  5. The only comment I can make is to sample a bit from all eras of visual kei. Every decade comes with it's own sounds, styles, and aesthetics. You may discover you like old-school more than you thought, or that the newer metalcore stuff is your preference, etc.

Cool. Is there 70s and 80s visual kei? I've never heard of a band that goes that far back, only to the early 90s.

  6. i suggest you to dig for similar bands on last.fm, it´s pretty convient. also there´s a lot of information here. although don´t just stick with visual kei, jap music has so many varieties to offer ;) good luck!

Wasn't planning on sticking solely with visual kei, but that's the style I've only recently become interested in. I've liked a lot of Japanese post-rock and shoegaze for years lol

Something you could also do is keep an eye on the status updates here. We usually go on the site plug.dj 1-2 times a week and that's a really great way to discover new bands.

    Thanks! :D

  7. Hi! I've only recently gotten into vk (and j-rock in general) so I don't have much clue where to start; here's what I have currently.

These are mostly recommendations from a friend who likes vk (MeteoroiD is a random download from the visual kei section here.) The only one I already knew is Dir en grey - I'd heard of Malice Mizer, but never heard their music.) My problem is that, having heard an album or EP from each, I liked everything I heard. DEATHGAZE, MEJIBRAY and DEG were my favourites. What do I get now? There are so many visual kei bands and I don't know where to really start. I want to get a feel for the different styles within visual kei, but I don't really know any resources.

I was hoping yall could suggest some good bands, albums etc (or maybe resources) to help me get more into vk.

    thx! c:
