Day 27

Edge of the Axe - A late 80's Spanish-American slasher film that I have not seen, and it's pretty damn fun. It's straight-forward, but it feels very much like a slasher from 83 and that's very nice. Fun, little gem this. 7/10

Day 28

Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight - A polish slasher that was a lot of fun, if you like your slashers brainless, dumb and stupid. And I just happen to do that. It's a backwoods horror movie that surely is inspired by the brilliant Hatchet series, as well as carrying on the meta element from Scream and, obviously, 80's slashers. Fun as hell. 7/10

Day 29

The Devil's Rain - This is sort of a cult movie, and it's weird as hell. It's fun, it's wild, it's unique, and it's damn fun. It's also hilarious that a young John Travolta was introduced to Scientology on the set of this movie. It feels odd, as this has cults and shit in it. Weird film, but if you like weird this might be for you. 7/10

Day 30

Ghost Story of Yotsuya - This is often said to be the best adaptation of Yotsuya Kaidan, and it's kinda hard to disagree. The first 40 minutes or so are pretty slow, but it takes its time to really build up the characters, plot, the world and so on. The last 2/3 of the movie is pretty damn dark and twisted, and especially for a movie this old. This was surely ahead of its time as far as gore, darkness and such goes. Beautiful film! 9/10

Day 31

Halloween - Watching horror movies throughout October is the only tradition I keep, and it's so worth it, especially when ending with this masterpiece. John Carpenter's Halloween was, and is, the ultimate slasher film. It's just perfectly executed, and it's so obvious that John Carpenter was a master of cinema already here. He got an eye for details, knows exactly how you build atmosphere and so on. Slasher perfection! 10/10

I watched a Russian sci-fi horror movie called Sputnik today and it was really good. Something like a mix of Deus Ex Machina, without being so heavy on the themes and complexity, and Life, but without being so much of a horror movie as Life was. I thought it was really good with great set designs, a superb cast, an interesting monster design and lovely atmosphere. Really enjoyed it. 8/10

@Bear Good to hear praise for Sputnik! My buddies and I were planning to watch it together (but Corona struck one of us so had to postpone), looking forward to it with moderately high expectations. Heard mostly good things about it so far, we'll see.

I'm not sure what my last horror flick was, I'm watching a bunch of shit lately with the days blending together... but nothing amazing sadly. The last two movies I remember seeing that entertained me more than the rest were The Tingler and Mr. Sardonicus. I especially liked the latter one. Great story with an eerie atmosphere and powerful dramatic scenes (even if B-grade melodramatic at times, lol).

Man, William Castle was such a fun director. Macabre, House on Haunted Hill, The Tingler, 13 Ghosts, Homicidal, Mr. Sardonicus, Strait-Jacket and The Night Walker are all pretty damn amazing, and The Old Dark House is really fun, albeit very strange, as well. He was quite ahead of his time, and really pushed horror forwards with his use of gimmicks both within and outside of the movies. I really would've loved to travel back to the late 50's and see some of his movies in the cinema. Must've been absolutely amazing.

Yeah, the only thing I wish is to travel back in time to experience all the gimmicks in person, cuz it seems like (to me) that's half the fun. In the last few weeks I also saw House on Haunted Hill and 13 Ghosts but those didn't amaze me that much on their own (I liked Haunted Hill better). I have The Night Walker downloaded, will get to that one too, eventually. :)

I can totally get why it isn't for everyone, but I just love William Castle's sense of humor and camp, alongside the atmosphere he creates. All of this was just completely forgotten in the remakes of his movies. There's just such a huge difference between his originals and the remakes.

The Mortuary Collection - Oh man, what a blast of a movie.  The Mortuary Collection are one of those rate anthology movies where every single segment, as well as the frame story, works incredibly well. And the main reason for that is Ryan Spindell, who both wrote and directed every segment. All the stories differ, but because it's written and directed by one guy we're left with a very consistent tone. They're different stories with different type of atmosphere and shit, but they all look gorgeous, they're superbly acted and they feel like they belong in the same movie, which in itself is quite an achievement in this type of a movie. I usually rate every single segment, but I won't in this because they're all really good.

Clancy Brown (The Kurgan from Highlander, +++ loads of roles in movie, TV-series, cartoon and video games) just steal the show as Montgomery Dark, who is basically this movies' The Crypt Keeper, The Vault-Keeper, Dr. Schreck, Dr. Diabolo, The Creep etc. He is truly magnificent! But all in all, fantastic film. Loads and loads of fun.

36.15 code Père Noël aka Game Over - I've been wanting to see this for years and years, but I haven't been able to find it. But I finally come across it, and what a great fucking movie. Back in the early 90's or so director René Manzor sued )or threatened to do so )the creators of Home Alone for ripping off his movie, and it is easy to see why. Because this is basically Home Alone, but for adults. An action-horror movie where a kid is alone on christmas eve (or in this case, with his very, very old grandfather) and has to fight an adult who breaks in into his home. This is dark, twisted, fun and kinda different. The first half plays along like a movie aimed towards kids (much like Home Alone), but suddenly it gets dark and twisted. Brilliant film, and happy I finally got to watch it. Amazing!

PS: I fucking love Home Alone I & II.

Possessor - Just fuckin' superb. What a relentless and bleak movie. Great to see the younger Cronenberg walk in his father's footsteps.

Looking forward to this, but the rip I downloaded was watermarked with some shit. But I'll find a new one for sure.
