Ooh a post rock thread.

Any love here for Russian Circles? Usually pretty sinister sounding stuff for "post rock", I feel like it's more emotional instead of atmospheric, which a lot of post rock likes to be... (not that it's a negative thing). So they might or might not scratch your post-rock itch but try them out.

They got a new album coming out at the end of this month, and next month they're touring Europe with lovely Chelsea Wolfe, so I'm going to see them on my birthday! Saw them a couple years back, it's hard to believe how huge these guys sound for being just a three-piece band.

There are also massive negatives to having too many subforums, they massively limit exposure. I would argue there are places where subforums are hurting us now (specifically the news->events subforum). Making people drill down even further kills so many views to any specific thread in that subforum...I would say as much as 75%, if not more.

 

Lack of subforums/organization can result in a lack of exposure all the same.

I absolutely agree that there should not be a ton of subforums, and that the existence of every single one should be well justified. I also don't see much point in dividing the downloads section, a tag system would work better, if it can be implemented (tagging old threads might be problematic though - who would do that?).

But even a single subforum for discussing "non-VK" stuff, general Jrock or whatever you want to call it, could be good. Because right now everything is in the general pool of discussion, and the general pool consists of mostly visual-kei. There seems to be a fair amount of interest in Japanese rock music other than just VK, and the threads and posts are there. But because the general pool is VK, everything else is just sprinkled in between. It's there, and sure, it can be discussed there in the future too, but it can really leave those single threads severely unexposed and eventually forgotten, because they've been buried under the VK stuff. Having even a single non-VK subforum to keep that stuff in it's own little locker would at least keep that stuff easily available.

No opinion K-pop though, sure this is a jrock forum so it's kind of a weird concept. But others have said many members here listen to K-pop so... dunno. Still, none of this is urgent or something that should be addressed right now, as Gaz said. Get the thing on your plate right now sorted out first.

Not surprised about the DVD, in their past they've released a lot of stuff that seems to be either fanservice or moneycatchers for collectors and hardcore fans who buy everything they put out.

Not to say it's a bad thing that they release another DVD, I love live recordings and at least it's better than yet another compilation album. But still, you could argue there is somewhat of an over saturation of Pura DVD:s already.

That's a great project, and not an easy feat. I wish you and everyone involved luck and endurance in pulling it all together, keep it up!

How extensive will the database end up being? Like, what kind of information will you cover? Also, will it involve user input etc. or will mods/specific people keep everything up to date and building the database? Users being able to input at least some things would be pretty effective in filling up the database with artists and info, even if it still required some level moderation...

End Of Watch. It was a pleasant surprise, I liked the directing and flow. Also, Jake Gyllenhaal is a gorgeous human being.

Like I voiced my opinion in the chat, despite being new blood, I'll put it up here too.

I think this is something that should be considered, however, too clearly dividing a forum into three or so parts wouldn't be good because people might easily get holed in their own little circle. It can't be good for the forums as whole.

Maybe the best way would be to keep the "public" general area as wide as possible by leaving as many of the important main subs there as possible (sort of a plaza), and then form smaller forums with less subs for the different musics. That way people could be encouraged to post about general Japanese rock/pop/whatever or K-pop in the appropriate forum, without making the separate forums the main thing and having people hole up in them too much (hopefully).

As a new user who is not specifically into Vkei, but Japanese popular- underground- indie- and whatever J-music in general (including some Vkei), I find myself browsing through a lot of threads that I know are about just another Vkei band to me. I know there are some threads about other stuff, so there should be some interest in music other than Vkei, but I'm afraid single threads here and there are not very encouraging for posting after the thread has been dead for a while.

I actually like genres. I hate it when People think, that they are so individual and have a huge knowledge when they say, that music is music and you can't put it into a specific direction. Genres comes in handy. How am I supposed to search for (example) "brutal technical death metal"  when there would be no genres? There are specific directions in music wich I prefer... so I can search easily for that direction   Sorry for my bad english...

I understand this mentality, however there are a lot of genres that only scratch the surface of the music, leaving everything else still up to you to discover. Not to mention the bullshit genres that doesn't really even tell anything about the music to begin with... Sure, it'll work if I hear something obviously blues rock or speed metal or... house or whatever. But if the band is shittily categorized as alternative or indie or avant garde or something equally ambiguous? For example, is Vkei a genre? What kind of music does it represent, and if I'd hear one random Vkei band and thought "I want more", and searched for more Vkei, how many of those bands would be anything like the first band?

Genres would be awesome if they worked and were thought out much more thoroughly. It's a good idea, but has quickly turned into a huge mess. Especially these days, music is not as easy to flop into the genre lockers as it might have been - unless you're into something really basic (basic not being a negative thing) and easily categorized.

Obviously I'm just talking about my experiences based on the music I listen to... but way too often I've tried to find more of stuff like X, but the genres that they supposedly represent offer nothing of the like.

But I don't see the appeal of digital releases, sure it's cheaper, but that's it. There's no fun in having some files on a computer, so I'm happy they're keeping it to CD's.

Good quality, properly tagged albums you don't need to spend time hunting for? Supporting the artists (though if they're major, this might or might not be such a strong point) without having to give an arm and a leg.

Of course, I'm only talking for myself, but I buy digital music if it's of good quality and of reasonable price. I buy physical copies and I probably always will, but with the price of a new, not previously owned CD being what it is, I only really buy the ones that I consider really good albums that I absolutely want to own. Digital is a nice middle ground for stuff that might not be "best of the best", but still good enough that I want to support the artists and add the music to my collection.

Mono & World's End Girlfriend - Palmless Prayer

As a dude who appreciates dude beauty and handsomness, I'll pitch in an opinion here. I fucking love full beards, but I also like clean shaven faces, stubble, and everything in between. However, having a beard and/or facial hair is and should be an act of commitment, not a side product of laziness. Just like dudes having long hair - it's a big commitment and requires care. It's cool as long as you do commit to keeping it neat and clean, but if it's just "I don't bother to cut it"... well, it can get pretty damn gross pretty damn quick. Another thing is growth and it's pattern, and whether or not you can pull it off... If the growth is not quite thick enough, letting it grow should perhaps be reconsidered (not to say you can't pull a thin growth look).

I myself have pretty thick and dark facial hair, and I keep a chin beard + 'stash, both neatly trimmed about twice a week. I'd grow a thick full face beard (at least try it out) in a heartbeat, but my cheek growth is just way too lackluster so I just have to embrace my Johnny Depp facial hair and do with what I have. Sure the stash is a bit of a stout head sponge, and if I eat something sticky I'll need to make sure it's all clean afterwards, but I won't shave my stuff for anyone.

Gotta remember that this game probably wouldn't have been without IV, or at least it wouldn't be the same.

IV was a much needed reboot after Rockstar almost getting stuck in a rut, and I think it's best to think of it as a "first part" of the present series, or at least the first actual sequel since III. Afterall, it really is the first numerical sequel since III, you could really think of Vice City and San Andreas as some sort of full brewed "DLC" or expansions.

IV was made in small baby steps, and without taking those, I'd argue that they couldn't have taken the grown up steps required for making GTA V happen in it's full glory. Sometimes you have to go slow or even start anew to make something better. So yeah, I completely understand when people say IV wasn't "as good", but it's still a super important part of the series, and I love it for at least that.

Glad to hear they've upped everything in V though, I was expecting that. I was surprised by the world size though, I think I read somewhere it's even bigger than in SA? Despite it being only Los Santos and the surrounding countryside? That's seriously impressive.

Really wish I could get my hands on it, but I really can't spare the money right now   I could maybe sell some games but I kinda don't want to give away any of them.

Are there like, any significant improvements or additions to IV in the gameplay or whatever? I checked out some spoiler free gameplay vids but couldn't get a good idea about any new stuff, mostly just people running and driving around randomly

Thanks about the nick! Back when I started using it, I gave it way more thought than I'd like to admit. But it's fun because it's kind of nonsensical and leaves a little bit room for imagination. And yeah, because it sounds kinda cute.

By the looks of it you people have pretty diverse taste in music too, which is great! It's not really always the case with these Jrock communities... I mean, it's cool to be hardcore fan of something, but if 80% of active users in a forum dedicated for Japanese music in general are actually Gazette fans or something... then maybe it's time to make a dedicated Gazette forum and leave the general forum for other stuff.

Not to give a bad rap to Gazette fans or anything, it's just the first thing that came to mind when trying to think of a very vocal, fiery fanbase (or are Gazette no longer "a thing"?)

Hellooo! My name is Andreas, I'm 22 and I live in a fabulous country called Finland (that's internet sarcasm there). I found this forum while looking for some jrock forums, and this looks like a pretty nice place so I thought I'd give it a shot!

I started listening to Japanese music sometime between 2004 and 2005 through some anime (Nana Kitade, Porno Graffiti... I was into Fullmetal Alchemist), but the band that really pulled me into this stuff was Plastic Tree, which I still consider one of the most important bands in my life (alongside Mucc) even though they haven't gotten as much listening lately as they'd deserve. Some of the stuff I like is Mucc, Plastic Tree, Deadman, the god and deathstars, Diru (Uroboros and Spiro Spero mainly), Munimuni, 9goats black out... X, Buck-Tick, the pillows, Midori, Yura Yura Teikoku, Shiina Ringo, Ogre You Asshole, Laruku etc. etc. the list could go on and on.

Other than Jrock, I like post-rock, atmospheric black metal, sludge, blackened death, shoegaze and blackgaze, folk, anything dark-ish, melancholic and/or atmospheric basically. But I also like some trip-hop, dream pop, chamber pop, electronic, blues, jazz, swing... whatever man. You name it, I probably will be pretty unbiased about it (doesn't mean I will like anything unconditionally, but you know). I play guitar and, as of recently, a bass, my dream is to create music and I'm into all kinds of visual stuff, above all, photography. That's about it?
