  1. I am thinking about starting Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind next. Has anyone else here read it?

Funny coincidence, I was just about to post that I'm reading it.

I haven't finished the book yet, I only started on Saturday, but so far it's good. Great even. If you like high fantasy, I'd say the odds are you're going to like it. The world is well-made, and although some of the longer "lore" passages seem a bit forced to me, overall the book really is pretty captivating.

  2. 9GBO's Devils in Bedside was already mentioned, but I'd say it deserves another mention. The band seemed to have a really clear idea of what they wanted do from the get-go. They have their immediately recognisable style which hasn't really changed, simply because there's no need. Pretty much the perfect debut for a band, and I'm really sad to see them go.

Another debut that I thinks deserves to be noted is DELUHI's Surveillance. 9Goats managed to top their debut, DELUHI never really did, and that's not to say they released only bad stuff since it -- I enjoyed quite a few of their singles and liked the second mini a lot. Still, Surveillance is the one release that felt so refreshing a vk release at the time (It could've been just the other stuff I had been listening to, though), and man, is it catchy or what?

  3. What?! I was sure they'd continue for a while after they actually returned from a hiatus. Sure, we'll still be getting an album. It will be amazing and will make me even more annoyed about them disbanding. So, in the end, fuck this. I'm very unhappy right now.

    Worst news of 2012™.

  4. Must be a new single (or album), because they have recorded songs this year...

Take a look at the background pictures at the countdown page, it's full of "in studio"-photos so perhaps it's their new album. I mean because the countdown will end in ~179 days?

i think those are seconds and they roughly translate to 20 days...

    I don't think they're seconds either : P

    It's hours-minutes-seconds, so 177 hours or about a week.

  5. I also got of somewhat cheap... most of the games were 1-5 euros or something.

I know! I mean, Metro 2033 and Dear Esther were both ~2€ (2.49 and 1.99 respectively). That's like, what, the price of a large bottle of Pepsi.

I almost bought the Civilization pack as well, it was so cheap (~25, the original price being 125). I've never had the patience to learn how to play Civs properly, so I managed to resist the urge to buy it after all.

Oh, and who says you can't play games on Linux? My Ubuntu PC runs all the games above pretty damn well on wine. The only problems I've had so far is a guy with a shining hat in Stacking, mouse stutter in menus in Metro (which in not even a Wine problem, but a problem in the game itself) and Borderlands chat input not working -- Steam chat works, so it doesn't really matter.

  6. Borderlands GOTY

    Stacking

    Metro 2033

    Dear Esther

Fallout NV Ultimate (It was cheaper than just buying the DLCs...)

I got off surprisingly easy! Mostly because I missed some stuff. I just might still pick up something, though. I can't believe I bought both Torchlight and the two first seasons of Sam & Max from GOG.com just few weeks before the sales. They would've been like 50% cheaper had I waited and bought them from Steam instead.

Oh, and one achievement away from the full badge ;__; I missed one whole day's worth of the sale polls.

  7. Don't like Sigh tbh. WAAY too avant garde, the goofy kind of avant garde

They've done stuff that's more like traditional black / doom metal, if that's what you're into. Imaginary Sonicscape, maybe Hangman's Hymn and the most recent album, In Somniphobia are indeed very avant-garde, but some of the earlier albums don't have the saxophone etc. in them. Try the first full-length, Scorn Defeat, for example. It's somewhat unpolished, but very different from the avant-garde-stuff. Not that much like Diru, though, so I don't think it's what you're looking for here.

  8. Is it only me or does like almost every Finn here look very exhausted in show yourself-topiccu? D:

    What a phlegmatic/tired country :(

I don't post pictures of myself here, but I do look very exhausted all the time.

So yeah, I guess this is "a phlegmatic/tired country :("

  9. Since you can see Japanese characters in chrome, it's not an issue with the font(s).

How come? I'm not certain about how Windows does it, but it would seem odd if it wasn't possible for different programs to use different fonts.

Let's say that program A uses font F and program B uses a different font F'. Initially, both work work fine, have support for Japanese characters etc. Then, due to an automatic update or lack of an update, font F' or the way Windows displays fonts changes, and removes the Japanese characters from F' (Or it might even remove F' entirely, resulting in a fallback font). B no longer supports Japanese output since F' no longer "works", but since F hasn't changed, A displays everything just like before.

At least that's how I think it could happen, again, this is just speculative.

  10. ^

It's been around long since April fool's. I'd say it's just another baseless rumor. They come and go, no need to make a big fuss about it.

On the other hand, in case it turns out to be true and Sony will actually release a console that doesn't support used games I just might have to give up buying their systems.

  11. Haven't used Windows for a (long) while, so I'm not certain about this but you could try out finding more Japanese fonts. Maybe the ones iTunes and the file browser were using were corrupted during an update or something and Windows couldn't find a replacement for them for some reason? You could try to replace them yourself.

And yeah, uninstalling and reinstalling the language packs could also solve the problem.

  12. For "first-timer" noise: Merzbeat (it's hip hop-inspired noise but still, works as a great introduction to his style) or Merzzow

    For "harsh" noise: Venereology

    That's all I can suggest.

I got into Merzbow through Dharma, and it's the most approachable Merzbow album I'm familiar thus far.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIsh1J4FbKU Check out this track and see If you are feeling it at all.

Vivid Short Trip 7 Stops Farther and Drop You Vivid Colors would be the best to start with.

I would recommend to start with "With Oden on Our Side". Or "Twilight of the Thunder God". Their most recent album is good too, but maybe a bit more harder to get into, just like their older stuff before "With Oden on our Side".

Ot Serdtsa k Nebu (От Сердца к Небу) probably. I'm surprised Arith hasn't popped in, she's she greatest Arkona fan around here.

So many recommendations : o Thanks a lot, all of you! I'll make sure to try them out.

I enjoyed this song the most:

That's a really good song! Thanks!

  13. Hey, this's actually a brilliant idea for a thread!

I'd appreciate recommendations for these bands:

    Luminous Orange

Merzbow (I've tried an album or two, but didn't care for them that much. Thought I'd give another try)

Arkona (no idea whether they're good or not, last.fm is just trying to recommend them to me)

    Amon Amarth

Also, seconding dai 5 and dai 7 for a cali gari recommendation.
