VK is my safe space, I just realised I always come back to it when I'm at my worst.
  2. 4 points
Everything was already said about this. But what i want to add to the discussion are my subjective observations. I have the feel with social media hubs slowly replacing regular decentralized online communities, message boards and forums there is a change in the way fandoms communicate and behave. My feeling is that especially the younger generations don't "get" forum culture and therefore misunderstand what's being said here. You see it quite often that fans on social media are foaming from anger because "someone said something offensive about my fave on some forum", when the thing that was said was in jest and not serious. Internet humour in general has changed a lot. There are a lot of jokes, memes and phrases I wouldn't post on twitter, because I know for 100% that someone will take it out of context and send their brigade after me. Now VK fandom was always very emotionally driven… that's why i usually tended to avoid fandom spaces, because I did not care about seeing people shitting on each other for liking one band more than the other. There was so much drama, fake friendships and backstabbing in the community, it was tiresome. Many VK fans are certainly very opinionated about anything and things can rub them the wrong way easily. And there was always the issue that some people's opinion weighted more than others' and they thought they had exclusive rights to brag about others, but screamed bloody murder when others did the same. My impression too is that the people who stuck around the longest became more "chill". Also reddit… is a pretty toxic and one-sided hell hole.

Way back in the day, I used to think this forum was full of a-holes and elitists too. Then I started posting and I quickly found out that wasn't true at all. There's a lot of really cool folks here who just love Japanese music. I think a lot of the people that gave this place its 'elitist' vibe might no longer be here anymore or moved on from J-rock, and the only ones left are the ones who are serious about this genre and know a lot about it. That, and new members like you.

that's a helluva budget downgrade for the PV compared to their debut, I guess miss Kiwamu wasn't impressed with their pace so far? I'll need samples for the album before I'll say something else.

As mentioned above, it depends on what kind of music you like. When my friend first introduced me to VK about 14 years ago, she was into bands like Alice Nine and Antique Cafe but they aren't my cup of tea as I've always had a thing for darker aesthetics. I then by chance stumbled across Velvet Eden and have been in love with them ever since (before the reunion...) . But I'm aware their music is not for everyone and I've come to like many different bands with time though so I think it's about finding the right songs. Most recomended Velvet Eden - Sad Mask , Schwarz Stein - Release Me, Malice Mizer - Syunikiss, BUCK-TICK - Kain, Közi - Memento

I want to recomend the app (or their webpage for that matter) weblio. You can look up example sentences both in english and japanese! I find it very convenient as it is not always possible to translate word by word but rather look at what the whole sentence want to convey.

KiTTiE was probably the closest the west ever got to Visual Kei, both visually and musically and cliche-wise. Their music honestly sounds like it inspired a lot of the Nu Metal Vkei bands that started coming out around 2003.

I think it kind of depends on where the person is coming from. Metal Crowd: Versailles, Jupiter, Matenrou Opera, X (First 2 albums only) Pop or those that just want to see Kawaii J-Rockers: They might like Oshare Kei bands, ViVid, vNue, DaizyStripper Regular rock fans: Gazette, Mejibray, Phantasmagoria, Dezert, Miyavi Somebody else can chime in with more emo bands, I only ever followed Sadie We have tons of chug-chug bands. We got some indie sounding bands too.

I don't get that elitist feeling on here at all, not when I first joined, not when I was browsing this site just for news a few years back, and not now. The VK fandom in general has a steep learning curve but unless you're a very sidelines casual trying to make false/unresearched comments in here then no one's gonna call you out or anything. And of course you will see people who dislike your favourite band, even legends like Malice Mizer and Dir en Grey have their detractors lmao. Being able to agree to disagree with people on subjective things such as music taste is an important life skill. With the rise of social media like Twitter that can create these echo chambers/circle jerks, a lot of sad, sad people go berserk at the sight of someone dissing their favourite band *cough Kpop Stans cough*. As long as you can defend your positive opinion about a band in a polite manner then almost all the members on here will hear you out or agree to disagree themselves, I can guarantee that. I do that in threads myself. Unless the Reddit OP (deleted user, that's a good sign) is talking about the joke posts or the forum jokers on here, in which case I can only say that OP is being disingenuous by pretending to his feewy-weewies hurt by that one user who called his Honmei "The Kenny G of Visual Kei" or whatever There's people who've been on this site since TW. There's people who have been VK fans since I was learning long division in elementary on here. And guess what? They have been nothing but kind to me so far. I went on another music forum (for western music) and my intro thread was mostly people grilling me about their fav bands who I never heard of and people making fun of me. Go onto any intro thread here and you won't find that at all. I would know because I try my best to welcome new users there myself. This place is great, and I don't agree with anyone who says otherwise.

That's cool, I think with X Japan they're the kind of group that may seem boring to some but need to be respected for what they were doing, it's similar to what J Dilla did for hip-hop, it was new and ground breaking at the time. Can't say I know much about Shazna but I'd argue the likes of X Japan, Buck-Tick and D'erlanger had quite a lot of involvement in making VK popular

    Honest opinions on K POP?

I know quite a few people who were definitely into VK "in the old days" and are mostly into Kpop now, saying they lost interest in VK because there's nothing so great anymore, got boring and all. As far as I know, they enjoy the fun of kpop, mostly (even if they liked the darkness of some vk bands... I guess growing up can make you yearn for lighter stuff, as your life gets dark enough as it is). Also, let's face it: back in the days, many VK fans considered the musicians as SUPER GOOD. I mean technically good. As in considering Dir en Grey's Die or Karyu as some of the best guitarists ever. And so on for very liked bands. While, let's be honest... the melodies can be nice, that's one thing, but they're extremely rarely so good technically? So, well... now they enjoy the dance, which can be very good indeed, and the happy-light mood of the songs. Why not, to each their own. And many VK fans enjoyed the bands for the musicians' faces, it was most obvious when concerts were played in our countries: unsurprisingly, they now praise the good looks of Kpopmusicians. "To each their own". Special bonus: they can see some bands quite often, and in large venues. @Punk The Japanese government was very hypocritical (probably not for the first time, on different matters): 10 or 15 years ago now, they launched a program called "Cool Japan". It was aimed at promoting Japan as a "soft power" (to be understood as "culture power" in diplomatic terms). I was at a conference where some Japanese official in my country presented it, a few months before it was actually put into place, and the aim really was to promote anime, music, manga and other culture products consumed and enjoyed by youngsters. It was meant to help fund their exportation, through different grants / financial incentives. But for whatever reason (I don't even want to think of the possible reasons), things changed when it was put in place: I only ever saw it used to promote the classical culture of Japan (tourism for the oh beautiful landscapes, traditional ceramics, no and other traditional types of theater, and so on.) From our end (countries where the culture would have been exported), when we got in touch with the Japanese officials (embassy and such), the answer was that the demand had to be made from Japan. But the Japanese artist or organisation never -asked- to go abroad, they were always contacted first or at most contacted people abroad to know what conditions could be offered for "that act" to be exported: they wouldn't ask money for the export to happen because they wanted to be paid for the export. "Japanese pride". To sum up, it was everyone's fault. Although we can note that the government found ways for "traditional culture" to be funded by the Cool Japan program, while it appears it never applied such efforts for the "youngsters culture".
